Before class begins, install and configure all computers by using the following information and instructions. Instructor Computer Hardware The following hardware is the minimum required for the instructor computer: ! Pentium II 300 ! PCI 2.1 bus ! 256 megabytes (MB) of RAM ! 4-gigabyte (GB) hard disk ! 256-kilobyte (KB) L2 cache ! DVD or 12X CD-ROM drive ! Network adapter ! 4-MB video adapter ! Super VGA (SVGA) monitor (17 inch) ! Microsoft ® Mouse or compatible pointing device ! Sound card with speakers ! Internet access ! Projection display device that supports SVGA 800x600, 256 colors Student Computer Hardware The following hardware is the minimum required for each student computer: ! Pentium 166 ! 256 MB of RAM ! 4-GB hard disk ! 256-KB L2 cache ! DVD or 12X CD-ROM drive ! Network adapter ! 4-MB video adapter ! SVGA monitor (15 inch minimum; 17 inch recommended) ! Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device ! Sound card with headphones or speakers recommended ! Internet access 2 ManualClassroomSetupGuide Required Software Except where noted as instructor computer only, the following software is required for all classroom computers. Microsoft PowerPoint ® 97 and courseware fonts (instructor computer only) ManualClassroomSetupGuide 3 Classroom Configuration The classroom is configured in a multiple domain model in which each computer is promoted to domain controller. Use computer names, domain names, and network basic input/output system (NetBIOS) names from the table. If a Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server is available, use it to assign Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. Otherwise, use the IP addresses provided. Computer name IP address Domain name Instructor 131.107.2.200 Domain.com StudentXX 131.107.2.2XX DomainXX.com All computers are assigned the Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0. Configure each computer as a domain controller. Replace XX with a unique number for each student computer, starting with 01 for the first student computer. Setup Instructions Use the following procedures to prepare each computer for class. Before You Begin You will need to do the following: ! Read through all setup procedures. ! Make sure that you have the Trainer Materials compact disc that is provided with the course materials. Estimated time to set up the classroom: 7 hours Computer Setup Use the following instructions to set up the classroom computers. ! Set up the hardware 1. Set up the hardware according to the manufacturer’s instructions. (Refer to the hardware requirements.) 2. Configure the hard disk as follows: • Drive C: 4 GB formatted as FAT32 (The drive will be converted to NTFS as part of the Windows 2000 Server installation.) Install and configure Windows 2000 Server To speed up this installation, run SMARTDrive 5.0 or higher (smartdrv.exe), a utility that ships with Microsoft MS-DOS ® version 6.22, prior to running the Windows 2000 Server setup program. 1. From a DOS prompt, type CD drive letter:\i386\winnt.exe and press ENTER. 2. When the Welcome to Setup screen is displayed, press Enter to set up Windows 2000. 3. Follow the prompts to install Windows 2000 Server. Use the parameters provided in the following table. Respond to all other installation prompts with defaults or with information appropriate for your computer or location. When this information is required Use Partition Install to the primary DOS partition. File system Use NTFS. Allow Windows 2000 installer to convert the drive to NTFS from FAT. Regional settings Use a setting appropriate to your locale. Personalize your software Enter your name and your organization’s name. Licensing modes Per server. Five concurrent connections. Computer name “Instructor” for the instructor computer. “StudentXX” for the student computers. Administrator password Leave blank. Windows 2000 components Add Message Queuing. Add Domain Name Service (DNS), which is found in Networking Services. Date and time settings Use the correct date and time. Networking settings Click Custom Settings, and then click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Click Properties. IP address See the table above, in “Classroom Configuration.” Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Preferred DNS server Set this to the IP address for this computer. Workgroup and computer domain Click OK. Click Next. The default selection is No, this computer is not on a network, or is in a network without a domain, using WORKGROUP. Click Next. Completing Windows 2000 setup wizard Click Finish. Tip ManualClassroomSetupGuide 5 ! Install Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 • Run the service pack setup executable file. Proceed with the installation of the service pack. Use default settings at every dialog box. ! Configure display settings 1. Right-click the desktop, click Properties, and then click the Settings tab. 2. Use the slider to configure the screen area to at least 800 by 600 pixels. ! Configure Active Directory 1. In the Configure Your Server window, click Active Directory. 2. Scroll to the bottom of the window and click Start the Active Directory Wizard. Use this table to complete the Active Directory wizard. Active Directory Installation Wizard (Message) The wizard cannot contact the DNS server that handles “domain.com” to determine if it supports dynamic update. Click OK. Configure DNS Yes, install and configure DNS on this computer (recommended) Click Next Permissions Permissions compatible with pre- Windows 2000 servers Click Next. Directory Service Restore Mode Administrator Password Password fields are blank. Click Next. Summary Click Next. Completing the Active Directory Installation Wizard Click Finish. In the Configure Your Server dialog box, click Finish Setup. 2. In Control Panel, open the Add/Remove Programs icon. 3. In the Add/Remove Programs dialog box, click Add/Remove Windows Components. 4. Click Message Queuing Services, and then click Next and use all default settings. 5. Close the Add/Remove Programs dialog box. ! Install SQL Server 7.0 Standard Edition 1. Run the SQL Server 7.0 setup executable. 2. In the opening dialog box, select Install SQL Server 7.0 Components. 3. In the Install SQL Server 7.0 Components dialog box, select the Database Server - Standard Edition install option. 4. In the Select Install Method dialog box, accept the default Local Install option, and then click Next. 5. In the Welcome dialog box, click Next. 6. In the Software License Agreement dialog box, click Yes if you accept the terms of the license agreement. 7. In the User Information dialog box, verify that the information is correct, and then click Next. 8. In the Setup dialog box, enter a valid CD key and then click OK. In the Setup product ID confirmation message box, click OK again. 9. In the Setup Type dialog box, click Next for a typical installation to the default installation locations. 10. In the Services Accounts dialog box, accept the default settings, leave the password blank, and then click Next. 11. In the Start Copying Files dialog box, click Next. 12. In the Licensing dialog box, if you accept the license agreement, click Per seat, and then click Continue. 13. In the Per Seat Licensing dialog box, click I agree that if you agree to the licensing agreement, and then click OK. 14. In the Setup Complete dialog box, click Finish. 15. Exit the SQL Server 7.0 setup application. ! Apply SQL Server 7.0 Service Pack 2 • Run the service pack setup executable file. Proceed with the installation of the service pack.
