At 7pm on a dark, cold November evening, thousands of people are making their way across a vast car park They're not here to see a film, or the ballet, or even the circus They are all here for what is, bizarrely, a global phenomenon: they are here to see Holiday on Ice Given that most people don't seem to be acquainted with anyone who's ever been, the show's statistics are extraordinary: nearly 300 million people have seen Holiday on Ice since it began in 1943; it is the most popular live entertainment in the world
But what does the production involve? And why are so many people prepared to spend their lives travelling round Europe in caravans in order to appear in it? It can't be glamorous, and it's undoubtedly hard work The backstage atmosphere is an odd mix of gym class and workplace A curtained-off section at the back of the arena is laughably referred to as the girls' dressing room, but is more accurately described as a corridor, with beige, cracked walls and cheap temporary tables set up along the length of it Each girl has a small area littered with pots of orange make-up, tubes of mascara and long false eyelashes
As a place to work, it must rank pretty low down the scale: the area round the ice-rink is grey and mucky with rows of dirty blue and brown plastic seating and red carpet tiles It's an unimpressive picture, but the show itself is an unquestionably vast, polished global enterprise: the lights come from a firm in Texas, the people who make the audio system are in California, but Montreal supplies the smoke effects; former British Olympic skater Robin Cousins is now creative director for the company and conducts a vast master class to make sure they're ready for the show's next performance
The next day, as the music blares out from the sound system, the cast start to go through their routines under Cousins' direction Cousins says, The aim is to make sure they're all still getting to exactly the right place on the ice at the right time - largely because the banks of lights in the ceiling are set to those places, and if the skaters are all half a metre out they'll be illuminating empty ice Our challenge,' he continues, 'is to produce something they can sell in a number of countries at the same time My theory is that you take those things that people want to see and you give it to them, but not in the way they expect to see it You try to twist it And you have to find music that is challenging to the skaters, because they have to it every night.'
(8)To be honest, for those of us whose only experience of ice-skating is watching top-class Olympic skaters, some of the movements can look a bit amateurish, but then, who are we to judge? Equally, it's impossible not to be swept up in the whole thing; well, you'd have to try pretty hard not to enjoy it

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 61 to 70.
Being aware of one’s own emotions – recognizing and acknowledging feelings as they happen – is at the very heart of Emotional Intelligence And this awareness encompasses not only moods but also thoughts about those moods People who are able to monitor their feelings as they arise are less likely to be ruled by them and are thus better able to manage their emotions
Managing emotions does not mean suppressing them; nor does it mean giving free rein to every feeling Psychologist Daniel Goleman, one of several authors who have popularized the notion of Emotional Intelligence, insisted that the goal is balance and that every feeling has value and significance As Goleman said, “A life without passion would be a dull wasteland of neutrality, cut off and isolated from the richness of life itself.” Thus, we manage our emotions by expressing them in an appropriate manner Emotions can also be managed by engaging in activities that cheer us up, soothe our hurts, or reassure us when we feel anxious
Clearly, awareness and management of emotions are not independent For instance, you might think that individuals who seem to experience their feelings more intensely than others would be less able to manage them However, a critical
component of awareness of emotions is the ability to assign meaning to them – to know why we are experiencing a particular feeling or mood Psychologists have found that, among individuals who experience intense emotions, individual differences in the ability to assign meaning to those feelings predict differences in the ability to manage them In other words, if two individuals are intensely angry, the one who is better able to understand why he or she is angry will also be better able to manage the anger
Self-motivation refers to strong emotional self-control, which enables a person to get moving and pursue worthy goals, persist at tasks even when frustrated, and resist the temptation to act on impulse Resisting impulsive behavior is, according to Goleman, “the root of all emotional self-control.”
(9)will be “far superior as students” when they graduate from high school than will 4-year-olds who are not able to resist the impulse to satisfy their immediate wishes

The traditional definition of literacy is considered to be the ability to read and write, or the ability to use language to read, write, listen, and speak In modern contexts, the word refers to reading and writing at a level (1) _ for communication, or at a level that lets one understand and communicate ideas in a literate society,' so as to take (2) _ in that society The United Nations, Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has drafted the following definition: “Literacy is the ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written' materials (3) _ with varying contexts Literacy involves a continuum of learning to enable an Individual to achieve his or her goals, to develop his, or her (4) _ and potential, and to participate fully in the wider society."

Bringing up children
Where one stage of child development has been left out, or not sufficiently experienced, the child may have to go back and capture the experience of it A good home makes this possible - for example, by providing the opportunity for the child to play with a clockwork car or toy railway train up to any age if he still needs to so This principle, in fact, underlies all psychological treatment of children in difficulties with their development, and is the basic of work in child clinics
The beginnings of discipline are in the nursery Even the youngest baby is taught by gradual stages to wait for food, to sleep and wake at regular intervals and so on If the child feels the world around him is a warm and friendly one, he slowly accepts its rhythm and accustoms himself to conforming to its demands Learning to wait for things, particularly for food, is a very important element in upbringing, and is achieved successfully only if too great demands are not made before the child can understand them Every parent watches eagerly the child's acquisition of each new skill: the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of anxiety in the child This might happen at any stage A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural zest for life and his desire to find out new things for himself
Learning together is a fruitful source of relationship between children and parents By playing together, parents learn more about their children and children learn more from their parents Toys and games which both parents and children can share are an important means of achieving this co-operation Building-block toys, jigsaw puzzles and crosswords are good examples
Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness or indulgence towards their children Some may be especially strict in money matters; others are severe over times of coming home at night, punctuality for meals or personal cleanliness In general, the controls imposed represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child's own happiness and well-being
With regard to the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality Also, parents should realize that “example is better than precept” If they are hypocritical and not practise what they preach, their children may grow confused and emotionally insecure when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been, to some extent, deceived A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents' ethics and their morals can be a dangerous disillusion

The advent of the Internet may be one of the most important technological developments in recent years Never before have so many people had access to so many different sources of information For all of the Internet’s advantages, however, people are currently becoming aware of some of its drawbacks and are looking for creative solutions Among the current problems, which include a general lack of reliability and numerous security concerns, the most crucial is speed
First of all, the Internet has grown very quickly In 1990, only a few academics had ever heard of the Internet In 1996, over 50 million people used it Every year, the number of people with access to the Internet doubles The rapid growth has been a problem The computer systems which run the Internet have not been able to keep up with the demand Also, sometimes, a request for information must pass through many routing computers before the information can be obtained A request for information made in Paris might have to go through computers in New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo in order to obtain the required information Consequently, the service is often slow and unpredictable Service also tends to be worse when the Internet is busiest - during the business day of the Western Hemisphere - which is also when companies need its service the most
Some people are trying to harness the power of networked computers in such a way as to avoid this problem In 1995, a group of American universities banded together to form what has come to be known as Internet II Internet II is a smaller, more specialized system intended for academic use Since it is more specialized, fewer users are allowed access Consequently, the time required to receive information has decreased
Businesses are beginning to explore a possible analogue to the Internet II Many businesses are creating their own “Intranets” These are systems that can only be used by the members of the same company In theory, fewer users should translate into a faster system Intranets are very useful for large national and international companies whose branches need to share information Another benefit of an Intranet is an increased amount of security Since only company employees have access to the information on the Intranet, their information is protected from competitors While there is little doubt that the Internet will eventually be a fast and reliable service, industry and the academic community have taken their own steps toward making more practical global networks
