The safety of the hundreds of thousands passengers who use the CityRail network is of paramount importance to the management team at the State Rail Authority (SRA). Vandalism to carriages or tracks and illegal and/or anti-social behaviour on board trains or in the CityRail precincts such as commuter stations, carparks and bus interchanges is a major concern for the SRA. In the 1990s, a Master Plan was drawn up by SRA and tenders were called for a security surveillance system. Philips Projects Australasia was one of the successful bidders for the highly contested contract for what is the largest project of its type in the world. The station security package to all stations includes security cameras and high intensity lighting being rolled out across the CityRail network. In all, more than 5,700 CCTV cameras have been installed at 302 CityRail stations and major CityRail precincts such as commuter car parks and bus interchanges. To ensure continuous effective operation of the system, the SRA required a comprehensive maintenance contract. Images from all cameras are recorded at two frames per second, 24 hours a day. This huge volume of data is maintained by a digital recording and storage system that provides reliable, high quality images for use in legal prosecution proceedings. All video is recorded to hard disk drives and, later on, to 34GB DAT tapes controlled by an automatic jukebox. This provides continuous operation with no human intervention, where new video overwrites the oldest video in the system. An intranet network links each of the CityRail stations. Monitoring of the system (including live video) can take place from designated remote control room locations. The success of the CCTV rollout was evident during the 2000 Sydney Olympics, when the cameras were effectively used for security and crowd control. Cable Termination The TERMINATOR system is based on the KRONE Insulation Displacement Connection (IDC) technique which requires no stripping or screwing. Using a simple tool, wires are inserted between contacts placed at a 45-degree angle which simultaneously displace the insulation and notch the conductor. This method leaves more conductor between contact points and provides a more reliable connection. Screwless terminations also overcome the potential risk of failing to tighten the screw correctly, a common cause of terminal failure. Evaluation The KRONE TERMINATOR system saved time for Philips Projects Australasia as well as producing reliable connections. John Freeland, Philips’ Site Supervisor for SRA said of TERMINATOR: “One particular advantage of the KRONE TERMINATOR system was the ability to add CASE study KRONE Australia 2 Hereford Street Berkeley Vale NSW 2261 PO Box 335 Wyong NSW 2259 Phone: 02 4388 4422 Fax: 02 4388 4499 Help Desk: 1800 801 298 Email: kronehlp@krone.com.au Web: www.krone.com.au fuse protection with indication to the camera supply circuits when required without having to change terminals and wiring.” The TERMINATOR Disconnect Terminal allows for a fuse holder to be inserted at any time after removal of the disconnect link. This means that a special fuse holder type terminal does not have to be nominated and installed in the original installation. The TERMINATOR gives total flexibility. Eurovac is one of the systems integrators sub- contracted by Philips Projects to perform the final termination of data and video cables to the cameras and CCTV monitoring racks. “KRONE’s TERMINATOR was the cabling termination solution specified by Philips Projects,” said Greg Lankow, Managing Director, Eurovac. “Prior to the CityRail project, we had no experience with the product and, as a first time user, found it extremely easy to use. It actually halves the length of time we would normally have spent on stripping the wires down and connecting them to terminals. “From an ongoing maintenance point of view, fusable links can be easily monitored. There are test points on the KRONE block where a probe may be inserted to determine the voltage and gauge the density of the signal. Before TERMINATOR, we would have had to pull wires out and test each one individually,” said Mr Lankow. “We were so impressed by all the features the KRONE TERMINATOR system offers – and the fact that it is an Australian-manufactured product – that we are now specifying it for our other CCTV sites, particularly in the hotel security area.” Cable sizes 24/020 figure 8 24V AC power supply to the cameras 7/020 Tamper/vibration sensor to each camera.
