Không nói biết paragraph đoạn văn, đoạn văn bao gồm nhiều câu văn (sentence) Nói cụ thể hơn, paragraph xem tiểu luận nhỏ Điều có nghĩa phải tuân theo qui luật cách viết tiểu luận (essay) Những qui luật là: cung cấp cho người đọc biết điểm muốn phát biểu phần đầu paragraph, phát triển chủ đề cách sử dụng ví dụ cụ thể, sau kết luận cách có suy nghĩ
Câu văn paragraph phải câu văn “thông báo” đề tài muốn cung cấp cho người đọc Chính mà câu văn đầu thường phải viết chung chung, khơng mang tính cụ thể Chúng ta thử xem đoạn văn sau Samuel P Huntington (một nhà khoa học trị tiếng, ông bút tuyệt vời):
