An investment to get excited about 0 I There must be wiser investment, but it’s doubtful whether many will provide the same sort of excitement. If you’re looking for financial adventure, forget your saving accounts – let your money go to the dogs. 1 Greyhound racing might be suffering from an image problem, but the dogs still have their fans. After football, it is the second biggest spectator sport in Britain. More than 70,000 races are run each year, watched by 4 million people. And more than £2 billion is spent each year on betting. 2 In the past two years, two greyhounds – Some Picture and Tom’s the Best – were candidates for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. However, in both cases the award went to a human. What a shame! 3 But there are significant financial rewards on offer if your dog turn out to be a champion. For instance, it wins the English, Irish or Scottish Derby, you collect £50,000 in prize money. However, this is very little compared to what you can make on breeding. This can add up to total earning in excess of £350,000 over seven years. 4 Admittedly, the chances of your picking a champion are probably only slightly better than winning the lottery and the initial stake is much higher. Even a puppy will cost you £300 and you have to rear the dog for 18 months before it is allowed to run. Rearing and schooling costs about £3 a day, so you will probably spend another £1,500 without any guarantee that the dog will be any use on the track. 5 To avoid the uncertainty, some owners prefer to buy a dog that has proved itself and is ready to run. The cost, though, is around £3,000, even at the bottom end of the market, and some rich enthusiasts have been known to pay up to £25,000 for a promising young dog. 6 However, some of the cheaper buys are surprisingly successful. Two years ago, a dog called Stows Val, which had cost its owner £500, ran in the finals of the English Derby. This season a dog called Cee Kay bought for £1,500 has already won its owner £20,000 in prize money. 7 Even if your dog does start winning, it is unlikely that you’ll be taking early retirement. Normal races at stadiums such as Walthamstow and Winbledon net the winner no more than £50 - £100, and as a greyhound usually races once every ten days or so, this isn’t enough to pay for its upkeep, even if it wins regularly. Part 2: Read the following passage, then choose the answer A, B, C or D which you think fits best according to the text. Although speech is the most advanced form of communication, there are many ways of communicating without using speech. Signals, signs, symbols, and gestures may be found in every known culture. The basic function of a signal is to impinge upon the environment in such a way that it attracts attention, as for example, the dots and dashes of a telegraph circuit. Coded to refer to speech, the potential for communication is very great. Less adaptable to the codification of words, signs also contain meaning quickly and conveniently. Symbols are more difficult to describe than either signals or signs because of their intricate relationship with the receiver’s cultural perceptions. In some cultures, applauding in a theatre provides performers with an auditory symbol of approval. Gestures such as waving and handshaking also communicate certain cultural messages. Although signals, signs, symbols, and gestures are very useful, they do have a major disadvantage. They usually do not allow ideas to be shared without the sender being directly adjacent to the receiver. As a result, means of communication intended to be used for long distances and extended periods are based upon speech. Radio, television, and the telephone are only a few. 1. Which of the following is the best title for the passage? A. Signs and Signals B. Gestures C. Communication D. Speech 2. What does the author say about the speech? A. A. intrude B. improve C. vary D. prohibit 5. The word “it” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to ___________. A. function B. signal C. environment D. way 6. The word “potential” in the first paragraph could be replaced by ____________. A. range B. advantage C. organization D. Possibility 7. Applauding was cited as an example of _____________. A. a signal B. a sign C. a symbol D. A gesture 9. Why were the telephone, radio, and TV invented? A. People were unable to understand signs, symbols, and signals. B. People wanted to communicate across long distances. C. People believed that signs, signals, and symbols were obsolete. D.
