DESPITE và IN SPITE OF đều là giới từ thể hiện sự tương phản giữa hai vế mệnh đề, và thường được dịch là “mặc dù”.. Hai từ này đều có nghĩa đối lập với “because of”.[r]

I Grammar:Connectors: although, despite/in spite of
We use although, despite/in spite of to express contrast between two pieces of information in the same sentences We use although before a clause and despite/ in spite of before a noun or a noun phrase
Example:
Although he is so young, he performs excellently.
Despite/ In spite of being so young, he performs excellently.
DESPITE IN SPITE OF giới từ thể tương phản hai vế mệnh đề, thường dịch “mặc dù” Hai từ có nghĩa đối lập với “because of” Tuy nhiên, cách dùng từ có khác biệt rõ rệt IN SPITE OF DESPITE dùng với vai trò giới từ, đứng trước danh từ, cụm danh từ, danh động từ, V-ing
Eg Despite/In spite of his busy schedule, he still spent a day to visit my family
Cũng mang nghĩa ”mặc dù” ALTHOUGH, THOUGH, EVEN THOUGH dùng với vai trò liên từ, liên kết hai mệnh đề nhượng Do vậy, chúng có vị trí đầu câu hai mệnh đề Vị trí khác đem lại sắc thái nhấn mạnh câu khác Khi đứng đầu câu, though giúp câu nói trang trọng so với đứng hai mệnh đề Để nhấn mạnh tương phản hai mệnh đề, bạn sử dụng cấu trúc even though thay cho though hay although
Eg: Although his schedule is so busy, he still spent a day to visit my family
* Form:
Despite/ In spite of + N/N phrase/Ving, S + V+…. = S + V +……+ despite/ in spite of + N/ N phrase/ Ving = Although + S + V + … , S + V+…
