(1)Lesson Plan Period :30 Unit : (grade 11 – advanced) Preparation date : 24/10/2007 Lesson : writing (cont) I Aims : - By the end of the lesson, the students are able to write a thank-you letter - By the end of the lesson, the students are able to express gratitude in English II Lexical items : - facilities - precious III Structures : - I am writing to thank you for what you have done to our school - we really appreciate your precious help IV Teaching aids: - textbook - handouts - Sheets of paper - chalk and board V Techniques : - writing-based - Procedures : State/time Teacher’s and students’ activities Blackboard warmBuilding the sentences: up - ask Ss to complete the sentences with cues - thank / you / so much/ help given on papers (7’) - It / be / very / kind / you/ help/ us - Ss have minutes to discuss and complete - check the answers - we / be / very much/ obliged/ Transition: today we’ll use the phrases above you / help - we / be / grateful / you/ help to write a complete letter - write down on the board: Unit 4: p30: writing a thankyou letter Prewriting (10’) Remind of format of a thank-you letter.( task a) - ask Ss to read the situation in Task a and the letter from a student thanking the volunteers for what they have done to his school - ask Ss to read the parts in the format corresponding to different parts of the letter Then elicit the general format of a thank- you letter A thank- you letter may look like this; - use pictures and explanations to present some new words - Read the words one by one and ask Sts to repeat Lop11.com Materials - pieces of paper - chalk & board Chalk and board - salutation / opening - expressing thanks and appreciation for what has bee done - saying how useful/ helpful the thing or work is - expressing thanks / gratitude once again - writing a social note - closing and signature (2) whilewriting (20’) Activity 1: writing a thank-you letter - ask Ss to work in groups - tell them to read the situation in Task b, p52 and write a letter to thank Mrs Nam for her special help when they stayed in her house - Tell Ss to refer to the general format of a thank-you letter - go around to control and give help if necessary - when they have finished, collect Ss’ writing for correction later A model of thank-you letter: Dear Mrs Nam, handouts I have just arrived in Ho Chi Minh City, and the first thing I want to is to write to you to express our thanks for what you had done for us during our stay at your home Thanks to your generosity, we have accomplished our jobs in the volunteer program Staying with you, we always felt like being at home To be honest, we greatly appreciate your kindness and the help from all the people in the village Activity 2: Mixed-up letters - put Ss into pairs and give out handouts - tell Ss that the two letters are mixed up, and ask them to read the letter, sort out the sentences that not belong and move them to their correct places in their letter - go over the answers with the class PostPeer correction writing - Ask Sts to work in group of 5, deliver each group pieces of writings and tell them to (10’) read and correct their friends’ narratives - Tell each group to choose the best piece of writing, and the most special story - Go around to control and give help if necessary - Call a St from each group to read their group’s best writing, and ask Sts to give comments - Ask Sts to write the adjective forms of these Homework words: study, thank, help, environment, comfort Tell Ss they can refer to the (1’) dictionary if necessary handouts Lop11.com Handouts + sheets of paper (3)
