ABSTRACT English as well as native speaker English as an important medium of international communication is every part of the world No one can deny that English is a global language especially in this internationalization With the development of the international relationship among countries, English communication skills is playing a more and more important role in the world Because of this reason, learning foreign languages for international communication has become more and more vital to Vietnamese students Therefore, English communication reflex skills is an ultimate course in English language curriculum at university However, it is not easy for learners in this context to achieve their fluency and proficiency in English communication reflex This study aimed to summarize the difficulties that the fourth year students of English Faculty at Thuong Mai University have to face up with To achieve the aim of the study, I applied one tool: the questionnaire with 80 students According to the questionnaire, the following result were reached: English Faculty’s students facing both internal and external challenges and give recommendations to help students communicate English demand for improving the human resources’ foreign language is higher than before Additionally, most of countries in the world are using English like a main language tool to communicate and exchange information across every industries and sectors Consequently, English language becomes a global language which can be used for communication with native-speakers and non-native-speakers worldwide, especially in the education section, all university students need it for their studies in order to search information and obtain knowledge That leads to the result is a lot of universities throughout the world need to include English language as one of their educational tool requirements To Vietnam, a country that has the economy is a socialist-oriented market economy Vietnam is considered as one of the fastest growing countries in the world Vietnam’s economy is also developing rapidly and expending with the globalization trend That makes the importance of learning English cannot be denied For students who are the future generations of the country, learning English becomes much more necessary than ever to contribute to renovate and develop the country also to improve the image of the country world-wide Out of the most important skills when learning foreign languages, including English language, communication reflex skill is the most important one It is helpful for learners to use foreign language to express ideas, thoughts and feelings to their interlocutors Thus, it can be said that improvement of the knowledge of communication skills and the influence of communication reflex skill helps their English skill progress day by day In spite of its importance in English communication reflex, the state of teaching and learning this skill has long been ignored and given little consideration time Therefore, many Vietnamese students express a desire to learn and practice together in order to perfect English communication skills and use English more flexibly, which can help them make a strong impression on recruiters in the future However, most of the Vietnamese students face a situation is that they always think about what they want to say in mind by their mother tongue and then trying to translate all the words into English It is a serious mistake and often interferes with English communication In the fact that the Vietnamese students in general, and the fourth year students of English Faculty at Thuong Mai university in particular, still run up against many difficulties in the process of teaching and learning English, especially using English flexibly in communication This study will indicate the barriers, difficulties for fourth year students English Faculty who are directly learning and using English in a real working environment later Students of English Faculty at TMU will be the next high quality employee generation and the face of the country Hence, having an excellent English communication reflex skill is an essential Moreover, it is a key point helps them to catch the eyes of employers However, practicing and getting a good English communication reflex skill are also challenging and taking a long time There are the reasons why I would like to carry out the study in order to help the students find the recommendation and solution to solve the issues 1.2 Previous studies Communication reflex and communication skill are often chosen by many researchers in the world and Vietnam in particular Before getting up to study, an investigation of communication reflex skill encountered by students at Thuong Mai university, I will show you some reviews about the related study “Difficulties in English communication reflex of fourth year students of English Faculty, Thuong Mai University” 1.2.1 Studies abroad The thesis with the topic “English oral communication problem and strategies used by Thai employees in an international workplace to communicate with the native and non-native English speaking customers” by Fatinmar Jeharsea for the Tourism English major (2012) should be mentioned the English oral communication problems and strategies used by Thai employees to communicate with native and non-native English speaking customers in an international workplace The second study abroad related to difficulties in English communication reflex skill which I refer is that “The role of communication skill in learning and using the second languages” by Musolas Alsubaie (May,2017) This study is aimed to investigate how individuals learning a second language communicate The second language acquisition is a challenge that requires many skills such as reading, listening, writing, speaking, grammar, and vocabulary However, even though communication skills are important for individuals to interact and communicate, educators of second language learners rarely include communication skills in the curriculum The lack of the knowledge of communication skills and the influence of communication skills on learners illustrate the importance of conducting this study, showing some important communication skills Of ten participants in this study who used English as a second language, in the US, this study explored their experiences and behaviors when they communicate with others The study found a need to develop communication skills alongside grammar and vocabulary to enhance the development of second language proficiency 1.2.2 Studies in Vietnam The study “Challenges to speaking skills encountered by English-majored students: A story of one Vietnamese university in the Mekong Delta” (2017) by Vo Phuong Quyen, Pham Thi My Nga and Ho Thao Nguyen School of Foreign Languages, Can Tho University, Vietnam focuses on the difficulties encountered by university EFL students while participating in oral classroom activities: Speaking skills The findings show that English freshmen faced both internal and external challenges, especially the latter ones regarding the limitation of English speaking environment and extracurricular activities To have a thorough gasp and more knowledge of the study I have examined, I refer to the research “A study on techniques to improve the first year English majors’ speaking skill at Hai Phong University” The purpose of this research was to explore the reality of teaching and learning English speaking of the first year English majors at HPU and then suggesting some main techniques which include the methods of strengthening the teaching of English speaking to help students enhance their English speaking skill Only in this way, students who are learning English speaking can learn it well so that they can communicate in English fluently and improve their English speaking skill The author expects through the study, the students of Foreign Languages Department at HPU, especially the first year English majors at HPU can improve their English speaking in order to get a brighter future The author wants to change the student attitude on speaking English and let them find English speaking more interesting The expectation is that the first year English majors at HPU can consider speaking English as their favorite activity Overall, we can easily find out studies related to communication skill and speaking skill These studies have mentioned quite clearly and clearly many problems and difficulties when communicating in English of students in different fields but there have been no studies on communication reflex problem in students For this reason, I have decided to carry out a research on the shortcomings and difficulties of commercial university final year students about reflexes in communication and propose suitable solutions to improve English 1.3 Aim of the study The study is done with the following aims: First and foremost, the difficulties and barriers in the process of improving English communication reflex skills will be figured out in this study Then, the study would like to suggest and accordingly solve recommendations to deal with these problems and create the best effect in English learning for final year students of English Department Finally, this study could be very valuable for fourth students English Faculty at Thuong Mai University in perfecting English communication skill 1.4 Research subjects Based on the rationale and the aims of the problems, the subject of this research is “Difficulties in English communication reflex of the fourth year students of English Faculty, Thuong Mai University” It is obviously that there is one main subject here: English communication skill Therefore, there is one main subject of “Difficulties in English communication reflex of the fourth year students of English Faculty, Thuong Mai University”: • To investigate the English communication reflex skill problems made by students of • English Faculty, TMU To suggest some solutions in order to improve English communication reflex skill 1.4 Significance of the study The study mainly aims at pointing out the causes of difficulties in improving communication reflex of by fourth year students of Faculty English at TMU Additionally, the researcher also investigates the learning strategies applied by fourth year students in practicing progress As a result, once having been completed, the study is expected to bring considerable benefits to both teachers and students Moreover, the findings and suggestions of this study are believed to enhance the teaching and learning process of communication reflex for English majored students in general and English Faculty’s fourth year students in particular The results of this study may be a good help for the students themselves and other people who are interested in learning English communication reflex Furthermore, the findings of this study also provide recommendations for completing communication reflex skill as well Finally, the research findings would raise the teachers’ awareness of the students' difficulties, thereby guiding them in reconstructing their program of teaching to suit their students’ needs From this issues, the efficiency of teaching and learning in TMU will increase 1.5 Scope of the study There are so many different material resources that require a lot of time and efforts while my personal experience is limited Therefore, this study can only focus on studying the communication reflex skill of students, then determine difficulties they had to encounter when communicating to propose some solution for improving English communication reflex skill This study is conducted questionnaire surveys over the internet with the participation of the final year students of English Faculty, TMU I hope that this study is a value reference material for the students of TMU in particular and all the students in Vietnam in general to get higher communication level 1.6 Organization of the study The construction of this study includes four part as follows: Chapter 1: The introduction gives the rationale, the aim of study, the research subjects, scope of the study, methodology and the structure of study Chapter 2: The literature review shows the background literature directly relevant to the study being discussed 10 Chart 11: Strategies to improve communication reflex skill As can be seen from chart 11, many students (65 per 80) choose the method of thinking by English is the strategies to learning English 35 students choose the method of conversation group practice Each of strategies brings many benefits for the learners by many different ways To have a clear view about the two strategies above The researcher gives some ways that students can apply when using thinking English strategy and conversation group practice strategy The data is collected through two question is 13 and 14 39 Two typical method is described as follows: Chart 12 Assessment thinking by English method Thinking by English method is recognized as a helpful method It helps students familiarize their brain with English questions, and English answers Therefore, it can create thinking in English when communication situations Having 43 students say that finding the daily objects in English to practice bring significant result for improving communication reflex and highly appreciate the efficient of this method Planning in English is the choice of 26 investigated students They admit that the practice of English communication reflex by planning daily activities in English makes their ability to memorize and their knowledge of English is more clearly improved Ranked at the first is the practicing emotional expression by English method with the agreement of 55 per 80 total students The practice of expressing feeling states in English such as writing a dairy about daily life or using exclaiming sentences when talking with friends to express individual feelings is the next useful method that students should apply By this way, they will gradually get used to express emotions and this is extremely useful for listening and speaking to native speakers Because communication will be much more natural when there is emotional integration in it Along with finding a suitable method for ability, the students also admit the effective of conversational group practice for communication reflex skill the following analysis is described about the selection of the students of conversational group practice: Chart 13 Conversational group practice method The data of chart 13 would seem to suggest that the most selected method is finding crowed environment to practice English communication reflex skill there are 53 students consider the native environment is the ideal environment to interact with speaker of English Besides, practicing Q&A conversation with partners is applied by the students a lot (39) Creating conversations in an English-speaking environment is the important factor for learning English as a fourth year student of Faculty English with solid knowledge, students have many ways to interact with English native environment such 40 as English related part-time job, intern interpreter for book, film or video, tour guide In fact, we can see that students are always aware that choosing the methodology that greatly affects their own progress in improving communication reflex skill In addition, organizing small game in class is also an effective method for students to perfect their English skill having 35 students apply this method Playing some small game by English not only improves communication reflex skill but it also helps the students clear stresses away The atmosphere of class will be more pleasant and the students will learn English effectively Therefore, students should find out suitable research with their ability to enhance and improve communication reflex From the good reviews of the typical methods that the researcher received, it is recognized that students have achieved a relative improvement in their communication reflex skill when using appropriate learning methods 3.3 Conclusion This chapter presents findings which researcher collected data for the study The results of the research are transferred portion and showed by tables and charts Through the paper, the researcher received the two main opinion: the difficulties of the students and the strategies to improving English communication skill The biggest difficulties perceived by the students of English faculty at TMU is that the influence factors to English speaking and listening, lack of environment and psychological barriers In speaking English, worrying about making mistakes and fearful of criticism and limitation of vocabulary and grammar are the most frequentlyencountered problems Listening skill is affected by being unfamiliar of cultural knowledge of language and lack of concentration With regard of the physical setting, the lack of professional environment is considered as the most common hindrance in practicing communication reflex Students of The English Faculty at TMU have chosen appropriate learning methods and selected professional communication environments to deal with weak English listening and speaking skill 41 Based on all the findings that are presented and discussed in this chapter, some suggestion for the improving English communication reflex skill to the students at English faculty at TMU will be provided in the following chapter CHAPTER 4: RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVING ENGLISH COMMUNICATION REFLEX After discovering the reasons leading to the weak English communication reflex skill of the final-year students of English faculty at TMU, chapter IV will provide some solutions for the students to improve English communication reflex skill and some recommendations for teachers and university to promoted the learning spirit of students 4.1 Recommendations for students In order to enhance English communication reflex skill of the students, the author give some possible solutions below Hopefully, these suggestions will help students to have a good English communication reflex skill 4.1.1 Surround yourself with the English language Making brain get used to reflecting English communication is the first and the most important step when the students want to learn and use English fluently First, the learners should make themselves think everything by English When the learners are familiar with thinking by English, moving to the next step is that doing everything in English This will create a habit of being exposed to the English environment Imagining conversation situations and create responses, handle conversations to create a habit of reacting quickly to all situations encountered in reality To keep naturally English in mind, the learners should write usually in English It is not necessary to write a text or an essay regularly but write a few lines is possible Or only writing a sentences per day is not a serious problem As long as the learners 42 apply English in daily life regularly with the most natural way It is better for the students to write a diary in English They can write about their thought, feelings, emotional, something they have done on a day and even their dreams Creating a blog is also a good idea to replace a diary In addition, the internet develops strongly it is easy for the people to connect with the persons at the other hemisphere Nowadays, young people use some social networks such as Facebook, tumbler, Tweeter to talk, update information about big events in the world and share their feelings The students can also use this app to learn and improve their English communication reflex skill FB, Tweeters or tumbler is global social networks that be used by many people come from many others countries And they considered English as a general language to communicate The students can find a friend to communicate through these apps Observing and retelling in English relevant events of covering life, friends they will write these stories in their own voice and using specific tenses at night or at an appropriate time, practicing multiple times will help learners get the best results in learning English reflexively It is a good opportunity to communicate with native speakers they will help correct mistakes in pronunciation and grammar It will make great progress in a short time and leaners will feel more confident in communication reflex On the other hand, using English to demonstrate daily habits by English will help learners gain confidence when encountering similar situations in English when they are not prepared 4.1.2 Participating in using English activities Taking part in using English activities frequently is an effective way for the students who are looking for a professional environment to communicate and learn experiences from others people Choosing an appropriate environment is a very useful way to train communication reflex Through interacting with students when they are not working and have professional exposure to the ideal learning environment when learning The learners should catch any opportunities for exposure to the English language There are many activities that use English such as conferences, English clubs, part-time jobs that required English or interacting with foreigners at tourist destinations Regularly contacting with English environment will improve using English ability the creation 43 of an environment for learning and communicating in English is being invested to provide English language learners with the most convenient and professional environment to improve communication reflex skills 4.1.3 Expanding vocabulary No one can deny the important of vocabulary when students learn any language, especially in English To have a successful conversation, the students need to have a large of suitable vocabulary It is compulsory for the learners to learn vocabulary regularly if they want to get better in English skills such as listening, Speaking or communicating The students can put a suitable target to and complete it daily By learning new words every day, the vocabulary of the students is expanded and they will feel more confident when start a conversation and communicate with native speakers more fluently There are many sources that help students learn vocabulary such as internet, book, TV shows, teacher even from their friends 4.2 Recommendations for teachers and university Teachers and schools play an important role in motivating learning English ability of students There are some below solutions that teachers and schools can refer: 4.2.1 Raising students’ awareness of the importance of communication reflex in learning English Some students not have proper awareness of the importance of English communication reflex skill Giving examples to demonstrate the important of this skill is necessary In addition, teachers should create motivation in English for the students by some activities in class such as giving a topic for the students and discussing together, playing some small games related to English or giving the student chances to get a maximum point through doing exercises and presenting about something Teachers should also use the opportunity to praise learners for getting something right, doing something well, trying hard, and showing a positive attitude towards learning Teachers can timely edit as soon as mistake of grammar, vocabulary or related skills Moreover, they could suggest some useful websites, some tips to improve communication reflex skill 4.2.2 Giving more advices and instructions 44 Teachers’ advices are valuable information that helps improve English communication reflex skills Teachers spend a lot of time providing advices and instruction to students These thing connects to student goals It lets them know how much progress they’ve made toward their goals and what else they need to to meet them The students should receive and as the teacher’s advices However, during revision, focus on the comments that will make them improve their English ability The teachers’ advices are there to help the students, not criticize Their instructions are part of a conversation through which their teacher is trying to support them and their using English ability development Many people, when receiving instructions and advices from their teacher, they just listen as a rules and not pay attention to it Even if they meet the difficulties in communicating, they start to remember about what the advices and instructions they get At that time, teachers’ advices and instruction will help them overcome the difficulties they are facing up with 4.2.3 Recommendation for university In order to help learners improve English communication reflex skill, Thuong mai university should improve the English training program at the school Some ways such as renovating the level of ability of class, upgrading and improving the content of the curricula and extracurricular activities and more attractive is the effective way that TMU can apply to improve the student English ability In addition, creating more professional communication environments for students such as organizing competitions, English clubs with more professional activities is also very important That way can make students be promoted to participate in extracurricular activities and to improve the quality of training for students Hopefully, that recommendation can be useful for TMU to educate the next high quality generation employees for the countries 4.3 Conclusion In this chapter, the author showed recommendations and solutions for students, teachers and university after discussing and surveying about the difficulties in improving English communication reflex skill of the English faculty’s students at Thuong Mai University 45 Because of limitation of time and knowledge, this paper has got some shortcomings the limited knowledge makes the author cannot give the advance Therefore, for further studies, the researcher suggests conducting direct interviews more students with different background and achievement in order to get more interesting techniques In addition, the author hopes that the further studies can give more new suitable methods for the majority of students' ability CONCLUSION This study aimed at identifying, describing, categorizing the difficulties of English communication reflex skill made by 80 final-year English major of Thuong Mai university and the sources of these difficulties as well as some solutions in order to help them to improving English communication reflex skill Chapter I includes rationale, aims and significances of the study, previous study, scope of the study, organization of the study in hope that the reader will have an overview on this study Literature review is the chapter II which provides the basic theory and concepts such as definition and overview of English communication reflex skill, the important roles and common difficulties of English communication reflex skill It would help the readers to form the framework to keep research in the next chapters Chapter III is to collect and analyze data The writer has analyzed 16 questions of the survey test with the help of 80 final-year English majors at TMU Based on that, the writer has discovered common difficulties which students often face up with and gave some suggestions to improve English communication reflex skill which is shown in chapter IV It is so clear that communication is the heart of every organization Everything happen in the workplace results from communication Therefore, having good reading, writing, speaking and listening skills are essential if tasks are going to be completed 46 and goals achieved So in this study, the author gives some recommendation to help the learners this Due to limited time and knowledge, mistakes are unavoidable in this study The writer hopes that
