A study on almost 1.000 patients from Methadone clinics have shown that, after 24 months of treatment, the rate of new HIV infections is only

On the other hand, in the absence of Methadone treatment, the rate of new HIV infections would be 13%, equivalent to 130 new cases; the proportion of Methadone patients sharing needles falls substantially and the propor-tion of patients using condoms regularly increases as treatment goes on Methadone is considered as a highly effective and inexpensive method, which helps to prevent the spread of HIV, hepatitis B and C
