important source for water supply in Hochiminh City (HCMC) However, its water quality is degrading gradually This study was conducted in the dry and rainy season of 2010 in order to assess its pollution standard polluted patterns and risk from these pollutants Results from this study could be used as the scientific bases to propose mitigation measures and management strategies for the river There were nineteen water samples along the Saigon River and its canals as well as the influent and effluent water supply samples from the Tan Hiep water supply treatment plant (WTP) were collected Monitoring water quality parameters include physical, chemical and microbiological parameters such as pH, Conductivity, COD, BOD5, DO, E.Coli, Total Coliforms, NDMA, pharmaceuticals and some selected metals The results show that downstream Saigon River was more polluted than upstream Total Coliform, E.Coli, organic matter, Fe, Mn and Cd had medium to high risk level, causing adverse effects to health of users as well as water safety supply Concentrations of NDMA and pharmaceuticals in the Saigon River and effluent sample of Tan Hiep WTP reached the maximum concentration limitation of WHO is the important source for water supply in Hochiminh City (HCMC) However, its water quality is degrading gradually This study was conducted in order to assess its pollution standard polluted patterns Results from this study could be used as the scientific bases to propose mitigation measures and management strategies for the river There were nine water samples along the Saigon collected, of which one sample was at water intake of Tan Hiep Water Treatment Plant (WTP) and one from the Dau Tieng Reservoir Monitoring water quality parameters include physical, chemical and microbiological parameters such as pH, Conductivity, COD, BOD5, DO, E.Coli, Total Coliforms and metals The results show that downstream Saigon River was more polluted than upstream Introduction The Saigon River is the second largest river supplying water to HCMC It rises in Cambodia, flows south and south-southeast for about 225 km and then confluences with Nha Be River before flows to the East Sea The total length of the Saigon River is about 280 km, of which 106 km passes through HCMC It plays an important role to HCMC, as it is the main water supply and the host of Saigon Port, which is a hub for export – import of goods in South Vietnam as well as in HCMC Objective The study is aimed to understand the water quality variation along the Saigon River in the rainy and dry seasons Methodology There are sampling locations along the Saigon River from the upstream Dau Tieng Reservoir to the downstream Saigon River (Table and Figure 1) and sample will be taken at Tan Hiep Water Treatment Plant
