Overview ADC’s LoopStar SONET system is designed to enable service providers to easily and economically provide Ethernet business services to enterprise customers looking to increase their bandwidth above current DS1 or DS3 speeds. These systems efficiently transport layer 2 Ethernet service over SONET while providing the level of redundancy and protection associated with traditional SONET networks. The LoopStar SONET system is designed to be rack or wall mounted for individual and/or multi-tenant business units. At a single location, the LoopStar 1600 can cost effectively provide 48 10/100BTs or 12 GigEs or a combination of both. The LoopStar 800 can cost effectively provide 32 10/100BTs or 8 GigEs or a combination of both and the LoopStar 810 can cost effectively provide 16 10/100BTs. LoopStar 800 System ApplicAtion note Bandwidth Efficiency The LoopStar 800/810/1600 feature both high and low order virtual concatenation (VCAT) for mapping Ethernet traffic into SONET. This provides a significant increase in the efficiency of the SONET pipe over previous STS-1 limited mapping. High order VCAT scales in 50 Mbps increments while low order VCAT scales in 1.5 Mbps increments. The table below shows the increased efficiency of using high order and low order VCAT to transmit Ethernet services over SONET. Service Interface Bit Rate Utilization without VCAT Utilization with VCAT Ethernet 10 Mbps STS1 (20%) VT 1.5s -7 (80%) Fast Ethernet 100 Mbps STS-3c (67%) STS-1 2 (100%) Gigabit Ethernet 1000 Mbps STS-48c (42%) STS-1 20 (100%) The Generic Framing Procedure (GFP) protocol of mapping Ethernet into SONET is also provided. GFP is a standards-based encapsulation of both L2/L3 PDU and block-coded signals. GFP enables the mixing of these types of signals in the same pipe but not the same VCAT group. Ethernet Service Functionality The LoopStar SONET system's layer 2 Ethernet functionality provides statistical multiplexing that exploits the peak characteristics of data traffic with over-subscription of bandwidth to further increase bandwidth efficiency. Quality of Service (QoS) via 802.1Q is also provided to enable applications with low tolerance for delay and packet loss such as Voice over IP and IP Video. Quality of service will permit service providers to provide different classes of service with different Service Level Agreements (SLA). This enables enterprise customers to subscribe only to the class of service required for their applications, which minimizes costs and ensures proper service delivery. The LoopStar 800/810/1600 systems' Ethernet rate-limiting flow control offers service providers the ability to set a customer’s peak bandwidth for an Ethernet service and charge accordingly. By simply using remote provisioning, the Ethernet service contract can be increased to change the rate limit. The LoopStar 800/810/1600 solution is more800/810/1600 solution is more solution is more effective than today’s ATM and Frame Relay data services that require both transport layer 1 rewiring and layer 2 service contract provisioning. Aggregation of Time Division Multiplexed and Ethernet Business Services The LoopStar 800/810/1600 are next generation SONET elements that can provide traditional TDM-based DS1, DS3 and OC3/12 services along with 10/100BT and Gig-E Ethernet services. As business customers migrate to IP/Ethernet services, DS1 and DS3 business access services still need to be supported, and the flexibility of the LoopStar SONET system provides for all. For example, the LoopStar 800 can simultaneously provide 16 10/100BT Ethernet interfaces, 28 DS1 interfaces and 12 DS3 interfaces -- all in a compact two rack-unit element. The LoopStar 810 can provide 8 10/100BT Ethernet interfaces while providing 14 DSIs and three DS3s. Summary ADC’s LoopStar SONET system is a low-cost, compact, next-generation SONET network element that enables the cost-effective delivery of Ethernet business services. The benefits the LoopStar 800/810/1600 provide include bandwidth efficiency to minimize transport costs and Ethernet service functionality to meet the requirements of service providers for class-of-service SLA flexibility. In addition, they aggregate TDM and Ethernet for simultaneous deployment of both legacy and new packet- based services and deliver SONET network reliability.
