For the carrier, this presents a problem. The carrier must be able to access the DS1s within the DS3 and then cross-connect them to the appropriate VT1.5s within the SONET payload. Traditionally, this operation has been performed using a Digital Cross-Connect System (DCS) and a SONET ADM. Obviously, requiring two separate devices for this function increases CAPEX and OPEX for the carrier. With the LoopStar 800/1600 SONET Access System’s DS3 Transmux card, there is now a simpler, more economical, solution for this problem. Currently, two of these cards can be deployed in the LoopStar 800/1600 SONET equipment providing a total of 12 DS3 connections. A protection card with front test access ports is also available. Since the LoopStar 800/1600 SONET Access System supports VT1.5 grooming, a carrier can provide T1s to their end customers, transport them as VT1.5s over the SONET network, and then efficiently multiplex them into the appropriate DS3s for backhaul to the customer’s data center. Without the DS3 Transmux card, each of these VT1.5s would need to be cross-connected to a DS1 and then electrically dropped to a DCS, which would multiplex the DS1s into a DS3 for transport. Providing both VT1.5 grooming and the transmux functionality in a single platform reduces both CAPEX and OPEX, while providing maximum service flexibility. Service Flexibility and Cost Savings Since each port can be configured to operate in channelized or clear channel mode, carriers do not have to buy a separate DS3 card to support different applications. Of course, this also decreases the number of spare cards required. In addition, the same card can be used for both port and portless transmux functionality. Portless transmux functionality refers to the ability to access VT1.5s within one STS and cross-connect them into one or more different STSs without requiring them to be dropped electrically. This feature is supported on a port-by-port basis as well; therefore, one card can support any of the possible DS3 connection applications that may arise within a network. Incorporating all this functionality in one card can save a carrier 50% or more in initial CAPEX and ongoing OPEX expenditures. Network Reliability Tributary protection is available for any TDM interface on the LoopStar 800/1600 SONET Access products. For the transmux card, it is 1:n (n=1 or 2). With its protection flexibility, the LoopStar SONET Access System provides one of the most reliable and versatile solutions available for use in transmux applications. Summary In summary, the LoopStar 800/1600 SONET Access System enables carriers to drastically reduce their cost and operational issues regarding DS3 backhaul. Using the transmux card, carriers can efficiently groom traffic between optical connections or between STS-ns and DS3s. Providing this functionality on a per-port basis within a single card, significantly reduces CAPEX and OPEX for carriers.
