Read the paragraph about child labourers and answer the questions below a Do we know for sure the exact numbers of children working in slave-like conditions? b What are the conditions for children like generally? c Which fact is particularly worrying? Why is it possible for this to happen? A number of well-known charities claim that millions of people in the world work in slave-like conditions, including children One such charity, Compassion, suggests that one in six children between age and 14 in developing countries is involved in work of some kind This rises to 30 per cent in the least developed countries Whilst statistics are not exact and can be refuted, there seems to be convincing evidence that slavery amongst children is a significant problem Working children often labour in hazardous conditions and suffer cruelty and beatings More disturbing still are the 22 000 children each year who die in work-related accidents Most children work in the informal sector, e.g in homes or on the streets where they have no legal protection Also unprotected are the 49 million children, the highest proportion globally, who work in sub-Saharan Africa, often in terrible conditions What are the possible causes for child labour? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience Write at least 250 words 080 Children below the age of 16 have often undertaken part-time jobs in many countries, doing a few hours' work each week to earn some pocket money Some people assert that this is not a key issue because it doesn't have a great impact on children while others object strongly, maintaining that it is, in fact, damaging and takes up time and energy the children could better spend studying 13 Read the question in 12 again Think of one or two facts about this topic and make notes Children - legally allowed to work in my country at the age of 14 Only for a few hours per week 14 Think of two or three commonly held ideas or opinions for or against the statement in the question in 12 Most people think work experience = useful/good for understanding reality of work 15 Use your notes in 13 and 14 to write 2-3 sentences Use vocabulary from 10 or 11 in each sentence It is unarguable that children can in fact work in my country after the age of 14 although only for very short periods per week The idea that children benefit from having experience of the realities of work is compelling 60 Technique You can make notes on your answer sheet including quick lists of different vocabulary to help you vary the range you use Cross them out cleanly at the end to ensure they are not assessed The working world Practice Test Task You should spend about 20 minutes on this task The graph shows the number offatal injuries (resulting in death) of workers in New Zealand between 1992 and 2010 Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant Write at least 150 words Number of fatal work injuries, 1992-2010 7,000 632 6,217 6.331 6,000 6.275 6,202 6238 6,055 6,054 764 :.i34 "4° 5,657 5,534 5.575 ' ' 5,214 5,000 4,551 4,690 4,000 3,000 2,000 1,000 1.1 C8(1' ebnjbt \ CP Ci‘ 1.• oc" 0 0 ee CP ON 0-1' 0 9, 9, 0, 0,0,0, 9, 9 'le Task You should spend about 40 minutes on this task Some people believe that it would be beneficial if employees worked three or four days per week rather than five or six days Why is this? Possible answer: The diagram illustrates the way that a small holiday resort can change to a larger one At the first stage, new hotels are set up in the resort to meet the needs of tourists and as a result more jobs are created in the hotels themselves Local businesses can then supply services to the new hotels, and other companies are also attracted to the area, which in turn creates more jobs Subsequently, local workers can spend more freely as a reliable job ensures they have a stable source of income, which they spend in the area This prosperous environment also increases the popularity of the resort, bringing in even more business More jobs also mean more tax and income for the area in general This additional revenue allows the local government to arrange for improvements in infrastructure and local facilities, meaning that the resort is even more attractive to tourists As the resort becomes more popular, companies earn higher profits, which can be used for reinvestment In the final stage, the added appeal leads to the need for further hotels and more of them are built As a result of Due to Because of as a consequence meant that for this reason Task ld 2b 3e 4f Sc 6g view is that tourism is a huge advantage for the local area./Although there is some truth to these ideas it is also true to say that there are some disadvantages, too 13 Possible answer Idea two It seems a fair suggestion that tourism can also improve infrastructure Obviously, the need to provide good facilities and transportation for visitors to encourage them to spend money in the area means some priority is given to this The benefits are also felt by the local population However, this makes the assumption that development is always positive whereas sometimes it results in damage to the environment and is not sustainable in the long term For example, beautiful areas could get overdeveloped Answer Key Idea three An argument that is often made is that tourism brings many benefits such as a new population looking for work and an increase in attractions and facilities Clearly if there are many tourists in the area, it is likely that there will be a growth in cafes, restaurants and so on Although sympathetic to the advantages that tourism brings, I also believe that such developments can create problems The history and character of an area can change or get lost as the environment becomes increasingly commercialized Possible answers: Students' own answers Task 1 The percentage of those aged 18 to 24 using their smartphones to watch television was much higher than for any other provided that it doesn't harm any of the exhibits, more interactive exhibitions would encourage younger people to go to museums If some interactive activities such as screen-based games were available, it would make the museum accessible to younger visitors Unless museums advertise, people won't be aware of what they can offer There are three patterns (unless, if, provided that) 11 The first sentence is present perfect as it describes a trend that covers the past up to the present time At that time it was at a level of just under billion people and rose gradually until the year 2000 13 Students' own answers 14 al b3 c2 15 Possible answer a The most important idea is to educate people in order that they can understand how to manage money This would allow people to manage their finances much better For this reason the government should provide lessons in school to help educate people so they can this One benefit of such a move would be that people will be more competent financially However, this type of education would obviously take up time that some would claim could be better spent on other things, e.g in schools time is often limited and is needed for other types of study b A further solution could be advisory centres which are able to offer free advice to people The advantage is that this would help people before their problems became serious, in other words prevention rather than cure On the other hand this might be quite expensive to run so would not be viable c Finally, banks and shops shouldn't lend to people who don't have enough money to meet their debts This would immediately prevent people getting into trouble such as not having sufficient funds to manage a debt The drawback to this is that it could cause hardship if people desperately need
