1. THÌ Q KHỨ­ PAST TENSE  Thì q khứ dùng để nói về các sự kiện xảy ra trong q khứ và đã kết thúc.  Thêm ed vào động từ để thể hiện điều này.  I study at the university. (hiện tại ­ present) I studied at the university. (q khứ ­ past) Điều này nghĩa là tơi khơng còn học ở trường đại học đó nữa.  JOHN  He stopped going to lectures Dưới đây là các ví dụ khác: I work in a bank. (present) I worked in a bank. (past)  He walks to the shops. (present) He walked to the shops. (past) 2. PHÁT ÂM ­ed Đi ed cuối động từ thường được đọc thành âm ngắn là d hoặc t.  Nhưng khi ed được thêm vào với động từ kết thúc bằng âm d hayt, nó được phát âm là/id/ t I’ll pot the plants. (present) I potted the plants. (past) d I’ll load the shopping in the car. (present) I loaded the shopping in the car. (past) Ed được phát âm là t khi động từ kết thúc với các phụ âm sau: s mess / messed (mest) He messed her hair p sip / sipped (sipt) She sipped her drink.  JOHN  He stopped going to lectures k pick / picked (pikt) He picked his nose.  f laugh / laughed (laft) They laughed at my jokes.  sh fish / fished (fisht) He fished in a boat.  Ed được phát âm là d khi động từ kết thúc bằng các phụ âm sau:  b mob / mobbed (mobd)  He was mobbed by fans.  g beg / begged (begd) I begged for mercy.  l fill / filled (fild) I filled the tank.  z quiz / quizzed (quizd) The police quizzed him for hours.  v love/ loved (lovd) I loved the movie.  m hum / hummed (humd) We hummed the tune.  n thin / thinned (thind) I thinned out the weeds.  ANNE  Does he know what happened? j judge/ judged (jujd) He judged her harshly.  th smooth / smoothed (smoothd) She smoothed her dress.  ng clang / clanged (clangd) The bell clanged loudly.  Ed cũng được phát âm là d khi động từ kết thúc bằng nguyên âm: I fry / fried I fried an egg.  JOHN  I spoke to his professor, the head of the course he studied 3. ĐỘNG TỪ BẤT QUY TẮC ­ IRREGULAR VERBS  Động từ bất quy tắc khơng được thêm ed vào khi ở thời q khứ Ví dụ, thời q khứ của teach là taught.  I teach English. (hiện tại ­ present) I taught English. (q khứ ­ past)  Thời q khứ của find là found:  JOHN  I found out something else.  Thời quá khứ của speak là spoke: JOHN  I spoke to his professor Thời quá khứ của tell là told: JOHN  But he told me David had left the university.  Hai động từ quan trọng có các thời quá khứ rất khác nhau Thời quá khứ của go là went I go to school. (present) I went to school. (past) JOHN  I went to the University.  Thời quá khứ của is là was, của are là were He is late He was late They are late.  They were late.  4. THỜI QUÁ KHỨ VỚI DID & DIDN'T Một cách khác để nói về q khứ là dùng các từ did và didn’t.  Did là dạng bất quy tắc trong q khứ của do.  I do lots of things. (present)  I did lots of things. (past) Did là 1 loại động từ được dùng với các động từ khác (trợ động từ):  What did he say? Từ did được dùng để hỏi về q khứ với động từ say Nhưng ta khơng dùng thời q khứ của say với did Ta khơng nói: What did he said?  Mà nói:  What did he say? ANNE  And what did he say? Thể phủ định, hay trái nghĩa của did là did not Ta thường nói và viết did not là didn’t  I didn’t say anything. (past) JOHN  He didn’t tell anyone Vì vậy, có hai cách hình thành thời q khứ Một cách là thay đổi động từ:  I tell you. (present) I told you. (past) JOHN  But he told me David had left the university Cách khác là dùng did hoặc didn't với động từ.  I did tell you. (past) ANNE  Really! He didn’t tell me.  Hãy nhớ rằng hầu hết các trường hợp ta dùng did như sau trong câu hỏi When did he stop going to classes? (past) ANNE  When did he stop?
