to matrices with real coefficients that rarely attent to complex matrices In fact, complex matrices are very important and in particular there is a matrix type with complex coefficients hermitian or characreristic vector of a linear transformation is a non-zero vector that changes by only a scalar factor when that linear transformation is applied to it More formally, if T is a linear transformation from a vector space V over a field F into itself and v is a vector in V that is not the zero vector, then v is an eigenvectors of T if T (v) is a scalar multiple of v This condition can be written as the equation T (v) = λv where λ is a scalar in the field F , known as the eigenvalues, characteristic values, or characteristic root associated with the eigenvectors v If the vector space V is finite-dimensional, then the linear transformation T can be represented as a square matrix A, and the vector v by a column vector, rendering the above mapping as a matrix multiplication on the left-hand side and a scaling of the column vector on the right-hand side in the equation Av = λv Schur- Horn theorem PHAM HUY HIEU There is a direct correspondence between n − by − n square matrices and linear transformations from an n-dimensional vector space to itself, given any basis of the vector space For this reason, it is equivalent to define eigenvalues and eigenvectors using either the language of matrices or the language of linear transformations Geometrically, an eigenvector, corresponding to a real non-zero eigenvalue points in a direction that is stretched by the transformation and the eigenvalues is the factor by which it is stretched If the eigenvalue is negative, the direction is reversed 1.2 Permutation matrix Definition 1.2.1 Given a permutation π of m 1.3 PHAM HUY HIEU Hermitian matrix Definition 1.3.1 In mathematics, a Hermitian matrix (or self-adjoint matrix) is a complex square matrix that is equal to its own conjugate transpose—that is, the element in the ith row and jth column is equal to the complex conjugate of the element in the jth row and ith column, for all indices i and j: Hermitian ⇐⇒ aij = aji or in matrix form: Hermitian ⇐⇒ A shows that vn,n = yn so = y 23 Chapter Application In this chapter we study some variants of the Pythagorean Theorem The Pythagorean Theorem plays an important role in describing the relation between the three sides of the right triangle in Euclidean geometry Among the variations of the Pythagorean Theorem that we will consider, some are trivial while others are not We will find that these can be solved by using the Schur-Horn Theorem 3.1 The Pythagorean Theorem in Finite Dimension In the following we will represent the Pythagorean Theorem in different dimensions, beginning with the classical variant Also we will formulate the converse of the Pythagorean Theorem (PT), which we call the Carpenter Theorem(CT) Theorem 3.1.1 (PT-1) If we have right triangle, such that its two sides are x,y and the angle between them is θ = π2 , then x2 + y = z Theorem 3.1.2 (CT-1) If we have a triangle with sides x, y, z, such that x2 +y = z , then θ = π2 , 24 Schur- Horn theorem PHAM HUY HIEU i.e we have a diagonal of ti , such that PK = PK∗ = PK2 It is not obvious that such a thing is even possible If we try to find a projection in that way we will get equation with n(n−1) n(n+1) variables, as we see 10 matrix we will have 55 equations in 45 unknowns The bigger the projection, the more equations we have to deal with, and the systems will always be over-determined This is an issue, because such systems may have no solution we will soon see, however, that this problem can be solved in general and that the Schur-Horn Theorem is the way to go 3.2 The Schur-Horn Theorem in the Finite Dimensional Case The Schur-Horn theorem characterizes the relation between the eignvalues and the diagonal elements of selfadjoint matrix by using majorization 28 Schur- Horn theorem PHAM HUY HIEU Theorem 3.2.1
