In I 066 the AngloSaxon inhabitants of Britain were conquered by the Frenchspeaking Normans. As French was the language of the ruling classes (and Latin the land of education), words which come from French or Latin have been considered more formal than those derived from the language of the AngloSaxons. The table below compares relatively formal words of LatinFrench origin with their less formal alternatives, many of AngloSaxon origin.
