PROJECT Cable Sizing and Cable Voltage Drop Study General Introduction The purpose of this document is to show the cable selection methods for cable sizing and cable voltage drop calculation for MV and LV Power Cable including 6.6kV AC power cable and 0.6/1kV AC power cable.data Input: For sizing of the cables the following conditions will apply: a) Soil temperature for cables Not less than 30 vertical flame spread of vertically  Manual of power cable Cable is sized to fulfill the criteria of both current-carrying capacity and voltage drop Cable Installation Method The following method or their combinations is generally used to install cables:  On multi-level cable trays/cable ladder which are inside trenches  In conduit  In free air, on trays, brackets, ladders, etc  In cable ducts which are underground  Underground installation: All cables shall be run in PVC pipes encased concrete duck bank DUYEN HAI THERMAL POWER PROJECT Cable Sizing and Cable Voltage Drop Study  Above ground installation: All cables shall be run in Cable tray/Cable ladder/Conduits made of hot dipped galvanized steel with cover Covers will be provided wherever mechanical protection is required According to the cable tray/Cable ladder/Conduit routing Drawings All calculation for specific cables are based on the installation method that has the most stringent cable sizing requirements in its cable route Voltage Drop 5.1 Voltage Drop Of Normal Operation State The voltage drop is calculated in percentage of the rated nominal voltage The Calculation checks whether the voltage drop is within the required voltage drop tolerance, namely 3% of rated nominal voltage Voltage drop is defined by: ∆U(V) = √3 × I × L(R cos ∅ + X sin ∅) Where:  R and X (_/km) are the resistance and reactance of a cable per kilometer; R apply for the cable resistance of 90℃ The converting process for resistance from 20℃ to 90℃ is as following: ρ: Cable resistance for meter mm2 cable (Ω) ρ = ρ0 (1 + α(θcore − 20) ρ0 : cable resistance for meter mm2 cable (Ω) at 20℃ ρ0 =0.01851 for copper α: Temperature factor; α = 0.00393, for copper θcore : Conductor maximum temperature in rated conditions (℃) In this study, θcore = 90℃ will be used  Ur is the nominal voltage of the distribution board The default value is 230V for single phase and 400V for three –phase circuit  n is the number of conductors in parallel per phase; DUYEN HAI THERMAL POWER PROJECT Cable Sizing and Cable Voltage Drop Study  L (km) is the length of the conductor;  U x is the voltage drop values by phase system, cross section and formation of the cable according to the most common Cos  0.85 value used for this calculation According to above equation, if the result calculated by I,b' satisfies the specification, the result calculated by I b is also satisfaction 5.2 Voltage Drop Of Starting Motor State The voltage drop is calculated in percentage of the rated nominal voltage The Calculation checks whether the voltage drop is within the required voltage drop tolerance, namely 5% of rated nominal voltage Voltage drop is defined by: ∆U(V) = √3 × I × n × L(R cos ∅ + X sin ∅) Where: R and X (_/km) are the resistance and reactance of a cable per kilometer; R apply for the cable resistance of 90℃ “n” (Starting Current/Normal Current ) and cos ∅ (Starting Power Factor ) is chosen according to the following table -√3 for three phase four wires system;  I b' (A) is the current drawn by the connected load considered to correction factors  For cable installed in cable tray Ib′ = k1 ∗ k ∗ k ∗ ICable Capacity k1:
