PART IV: Reading comprehension Passage I: Read the following passage, then use the suggested words after the passage to make the questions and answer the questions you have made. The English poet and playwright (writer of plays), William Shakespeare is often described as the greatest writer in the English literature. Shakespeare was born in Stratford Upon-Avon on April 23th, 1564. He was the oldest son of a wealthy glove maker and wood merchant. Little is known about his childhood, but he probably attended the local grammar school. In 1582 he married Anne Hathaway, and they had three children. In 1588 Shakespeare moved to London and joined a leading theatre company called the Chamberlain's men. He quickly established a reputation as a writer of plays for the comapny and appeared in his own dramas at the Globe Theatre. He also wrote many poems, the best-known of which are the "Sonets", a series of love poems addressed to an unknown man and a dark lady. The boy had many friends at school and when he became a writer, he described them in his stories. When Samuel was twelve, his father died and the boy began to work and learned the profession of a printer. Samuel always wanted to be a sailor and when he was twenty, he found work on a river boat. After sometime, he left the boat and went to live in California. Here he began to write short stories under the name of Mark Twain. He sent them to newspapers. If you are invited to someone's house in America for dinner, you should bring a gift, such as a bunch of flowers or a box of chocolate. If you give your host a wrapped gift, he/ she may open it in front of you. Opening a present in front of the gift giver is considered polite. It shows that the host is excited about receiving the gift and wants to know his or her appreciation to you immediately. Even if the host doesn't like it, he will tell you a lie and say how much he/ she likes the gift to prevent the guest from feeling bad. If your host asks you to arrive at a particular time, you should not arrive exactly on time or earlier than the expected time because this is considered to be potentially inconvenient and therefore rude, as the host may not be ready. 1.
