Earle Castledine Sporting a Masters in Information Technology and a lifetime of experience on the Web of Hard Knocks, Earle Castledine (aka Mr Speaker) holds an interest in everything computery Raised in the wild by various 8-bit home computers, he settled in the Internet during the mid-nineties and has been working there ever since He is currently contributing towards JavaScript’s world domination plans, creating Mobile Web Applications, developing snazzy frameworks, and drinking vin rouge with some super-smart guys at Zenexity in Paris As co-creator of the client-side opus TurnTubelist (http://www.turntubelist.com/), as well as countless webbased experiments, Earle recognizes the Internet not as a lubricant for social change, but as a vehicle for unleashing frivolous ECMAScript gadgets and interesting time-wasting technologies About Myles Eftos Myles Eftos is a Perth-based web developer who feels just as at home building INNER JOINS as calculating the specificity of CSS selectors He has worked in all the major web languages, his weapon of choice being Ruby on Rails—although he’s found himself doing more front-end development in JavaScript, HTML, and CSS Under the moniker of MadPilot Productions (http://www.madpilot.com.au), he has worked on a number of applications such as 88 Miles (http://www.88miles.net) This also includes apps for the iPhone and iPad using PhoneGap, such as the popular Counter Culture (http://www.countercultureapp.com) He is rather excited that JavaScript is finally receiving the kudos it deserves as a serious language About Max Wheeler An interaction designer, Max Wheeler believes interactive media should function as beautifully as it looks Currently residing in Canberra, Australia, he works with Icelab (http://icelab.com.au/), a media-agnostic design agency filled with nice, well-caffeinated people Aside from client work, Icelab’s projects include the communityoriented Decaf Sucks and real estate startup RentMonkey When Max is not designing or building for the Web, he takes photographs, travels the world, plays Ultimate frisbee for Australia, and drinks twice the daily recommended intake of espresso On occasion, he’s been known to drop in at Web Directions South to speak about building mobile web applications About the Expert Reviewer Peter-Paul Koch is a mobile platform strategist, consultant, and trainer in Amsterdam, the Netherlands ppk (as he is universally known on the Web) specializes in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and browser compatibility He has earned international renown with his browser-compatibility research, and publications such as http://www.quirksmode.org/blog A frequent speaker at conferences, ppk founded Fronteers—the Dutch association of front-end professionals—and advises browser vendors on their implementation of web standards In 2009, ppk shifted from desktop browsers and sites to the mobile web, and discovered that mobile devices are in more need of description than their desktop counterparts He has set himself to the task www.it-ebooks.info www.ebook777.com vi Free ebooks ==> www.ebook777.com About SitePoint SitePoint specializes in publishing fun, practical, and Time for Celebration We’ve just turned our humble little web app into a real native app! As you’ve seen, PhoneGap provides a simple way to deploy a single codebase across all the major mobile platforms, and gives you access to the marketplaces and a potential extra source of revenue PhoneGap won’t be the appropriate tool for every project—sometimes a mobile website is all you need, and sometimes a web app can better serve your ends—but it’s good to have the option Throughout this book, we’ve gone from learning the concepts of designing for mobile devices, adapting our traditional websites to look and perform better, adding application-like functionality, and finally bundling it up as a real deal native app While the exact choices you make will depend on the specifics of the project, we hope we’ve provided you with the tools to enter this new era of web design with a competitive edge Go on now, build something cool! www.it-ebooks.info www.ebook777.com Free ebooks ==> www.ebook777.com Appendix A: Running a Server for Testing We’ve spoken about how you can test your mobile site in a normal desktop browser without a server, by loading your HTML using the file:// protocol Sometimes, however, it can be quicker—and in the case of Ajax, essential—to test a site on a real device via a server Of course, this requires a server If you’ve been developing for the Web for some time, you may already have access to a development server, in which case just throw your files on that as you would for any other website Don’t worry if you have no development server, though, as there are a number of simple ways to serve up the files from your local machine to your device, as long as they’re on the same WiFi network But before you can that, you’ll need to find your IP address In Linux and OS X, open up a terminal, and type: ifconfig Your network device will probably be called something like eth0 on Linux, or iw0 on OS X—take note of the IP address allocated to it On Windows, open up cmd.exe and type: ipconfig Find your network card, and note down the IP address In the following examples, we’ll assume that your IP address is 192.168.0.1 Just replace that number with your own IP address when accessing the server Using Python Both OS X and Ubuntu come with Python installed by default, and include a super-simple web server module called SimpleHTTPServer, which you can call from the command line To run it, change into the directory that has your website’s index.html, and run: python -m SimpleHTTPServer The server will start on port 8000, so you can access it at http://192.168.0.1:8000 Just point your phone’s browser to that address, and voilà, your site is there! www.it-ebooks.info www.ebook777.com Free ebooks ==> www.ebook777.com 244 Build Mobile Websites and Apps for Smart Devices Using Ruby If you have Ruby installed, you can install the adsf (A Dead Simple Fileserver) gem, by running: gem install adsf Then, in the directory that houses index.html, run: adsf This server runs on port 3000, so point your browser to http://192.168.0.1:3000 Built-in Servers While the Python and Ruby methods are the quickest way to serve up your site, they rely on having Ruby or Python installed (which you may be without, especially if you’re a Windows user), so you may need to use a “real” web server Built-in Servers: IIS on Windows Windows Vista and Windows can both run versions of the IIS web server To install it, open the Control Panel and choose Programs and Features; then select Turn Windows features on or off from the left column Next, select Internet Information Services, and click OK This will install IIS After that, you need to set up a site Again from the Control Panel, select Administrative Tools, then Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager The easiest way to get things running is to create a project directory inside C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\, and then point your browser at that directory: http://192.168.0.1/startrackr Built-in Servers: Apache on Linux Apache is arguably the most popular web server for Linux, so we’ll set that up Under Ubuntu, run: sudo apt-get install apache Start the server up by typing: sudo apachectl start It will automatically start when you first install it, so you’ll only need to it after you reboot your computer Again, to keep it simple, we’ll create a directory inside /var/www First, add yourself to the wwwdata group, so that you can edit files in the /var/www directory: www.it-ebooks.info www.ebook777.com Free ebooks ==> Appendix www.ebook777.com A: Running a Server for Testing sudo gpasswd -a username www-data Then create and set the permissions of the directory: sudo mkdir /var/www/startrackr sudo chgrp www-data /var/www/startrackr sudo chmod g+w /var/www/startrackr Copy your project files over, and point your browser at http://192.168.0.1/startrackr Now you’re all ready to test your mobile app to your heart’s content! www.it-ebooks.info www.ebook777.com 245 Free ebooks ==> www.ebook777.com www.it-ebooks.info www.ebook777.com Free ebooks ==>
