Lesson plan Date of preparing: 14/01/2015 Grade: 10 Date of teaching: 21/01/2015 Period: UNIT 10: CONSERVATION LESSON 3: LISTENING I OBJECTIVES By the end of the lesson students will be able to: - Improve their listening skills - Know more about forest fires: causes of forest fires, ways to prevent them - Know more new words related to forest fire II PREPARATION Textbook, lesson plan, handouts, projector, player, speaker III PROCEDURE Teacher’s activities WARM UP (5’) - Show a picture about a forest fire hidden by many color rectangles and ask Ss to look at the screen and guess the topic: What is it? / What is the picture about? Suggested answer: It is forest fire/ The picture is about a forest fire - Leads in new lesson: “Today we are going to listen to a passage about the forest fire.” PRE-LISTENING (12’) 2.1 Work in groups (5’) - Show some pictures and ask Ss to work in groups of Students activities - Whole class - Look at the picture and give the answer - Listen to the teacher - Group work a table and to discuss which ones are about causes of a forest fire - Call on some groups to present the answers - Give feedback Suggested answer: campfire, butts of burning cigarettes, lightning, or when the weather is extremely hot and dry * Introduce the talk: the passage you are going to listen to is about forest fires, the causes of forest fires and ways to prevent them 2.2 Vocabulary (7’) - Give Ss some new word Forest (n) /ˈfɒrɪst/ : a large area of land that is thickly covered with trees: rừng Forester (n) /ˈfɔːrɪstər/: person who works in a forest, taking care of the trees, planting new ones, etc.: nhân viên quản lý rừng, kiểm lâm Forest fire (n) / ˈfɒr.ɪstˈfaɪə(r) /: an uncontrolled fire in a wooded area: cháy rừng Campfire (n): /ˈkæmpfaɪə(r) /: an outdoor fire made by people who are sleeping outside or living in a tent: lửa trại Camper (n)/ ˈkæmpə(r) /: a person who spends a holiday or vacation living in a tent: người cắm trại Awful (adj) /ˈɔːfl /: very bad or unpleasant, very shocking: khủng khiếp, đáng kinh sợ A heap of sth: a lot of something: đám, đống Example: a heap of leaves: đống Save…from…: to keep sb/sth safe from harm, loss: bảo vệ…khỏi… Unpleasant (adj) /ʌnˈpleznt /: not pleasant or comfortable: khơng dễ chịu, khó chịu 10 Spread (v)/ spred /: to cover, or to make something cover, a larger and larger area: lan tỏa, lan 11 Put out: to stop something from burning or shining: tắt, dập tắt 12 Duty (n)/ ˈdjuːti /: something that you feel you have to because it is your moral or legal responsibility: trách nhiệm, nghĩa vụ 13 Wildlife (n) /ˈwaɪldlaɪf /: animals, birds, insects, etc that are wild and live in a natural environment: động vật hoang dã - Ask Ss to give Vietnamese meanings - Give the answers - Listen to the teacher - Take note - Give the Vietnamese meanings - Have Ss listen and repeat the new words after the recording WHILE-LISTENING (18’) 3.1 Task (4’) - Have students work individually, read through the sentences silently and guess the order of the events - Instruction: you are going to listen to a passage about forest fires Listen and number the events in the order you hear - Have students listen to the cassette (2 times), task and exchange their answers with their partners’ - Call on some students to write their answers on the board - Correct the answers Suggested answers: 3.2 Task (8’) - Have students work individually, read through the sentences silently and underline the key words - Ask students to translate into Vietnamese - Go over the key words and Vietnamese meaning with the class - Instruction: now you listen to the tape again and decide whether the statements provided are True or False Put a tick in the appropriate box - Have students listen to the cassette once to task and exchange their answers with their partners’ - Play the tape again for Ss to check their answers - Call on some students to write their answers on the board and explain their answers - Feedback and give correct answers Suggested answers: F (It spreads quickly) F (In late summer) T T F (It is the duty of anyone of us) 3.3 Task (7’) - Ask Ss to work in pairs, read through the sentences and underline the different parts between the sentences - Go over the different parts and Vietnamese meaning with the class - Listen and repeat - Individual work -
