Skills: Speaking: express opinions and preferences 5. Teaching aids: Text book, chalk, cards 6. Procedure: Time Procedure Aims/ Arrangemen 1 t I. Warm-up 5’ Game: Sport Categories - Divide sts in groups of 4 - Ask sts to work in groups and write a list of different sports for each of these headings. - Call 4 sts to write on the board - T check Winter sports- Water sports- Table sports- Sts work in groups II. Pre- Speaking 5’ 5’ 5’ 1. Acting out the exchange (task a, p. 150) - Have sts to work in pairs and act out the exchange between Tom and Linda. - Call on a pair to act it out in front of the class. - Tell sts to pick out and write the expressions/ phrases that Tom used to express opinions and preferences in the columns. - Ask sts to find out more common expressions used to express preferences - Call 2 sts to write on the board. - T check and elicit to give more expressions • I prefer … to … • I’d rather … • I’d prefer … • I find … more (interesting/enjoyable…) • I like … better/ more than … • I have a strong preference to … • I choose … in preference … to … • It’s better to … • … Sts do task a, with their partners Sts write as many expressions as possible III. While- speaking 10’ 1. Which do you prefer? (Task b, p. 151) - Pair off the sts and tell each big group to talk about 2 kinds of water sport - tell them to talk about the sports they like and the one they prefer - tell them to refer to some criteria to give reasons for their choice: 2 10’ • cost of the game • equipments needed • speed • weather and health restrictions - Encourage them to use the expressions just learned above - Teacher go around to give help when necessary - Choose some pairs to act out their exchange in front of the class - Invite opinions and comments - Give feedback and comments. IV. Post- speaking 5’ - Tell sts to write two sentences about the sport they prefer to another and reason why. - Give an example: ‘I prefer swimming to water- skiing because it is cheap and simple. You need almost nothing and you don’t need much skill.’ - Go round to mornitor and give help - Have ss exchange writings and check each other’s - Choose 2 sts to read out their sentences and check with the class. V. Home work - Tell sts to review the language used to express opinions and preferences at home. 3 .
