Moreover, it creates a favorable environment for science innovation and academic freedom in a standard university city ANNUAL REPORT 2013 MESSAGE FROM VNU-HCM PRESIDENT Higher education is an important ingredient in promoting the country development The Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM), a large university system in the nation, is committed to fulfilling its mission and building it upon the true definition and the noble nature of a UNIVERSITY The end of old days marks the start of new days The year 2013 is coming to an end, but for VNUHCM, it signals a new developmental phase In other words, it is just the end of a specific period of time in the unlimited space for VNU-HCM growth 365 days of the year 2013 would be a period of endless efforts of VNU-HCM staff and students, and a milestone in the implementation of the 20112015 strategic plan, the 18th anniversary of founding of VNU-HCM, and the 60th anniversary of leading universities in Saigon-Ho Chi Minh City A look back at the Year 2013 History is on the move People and things are growing over time, tradition and history VNU-HCM is growing with the history and making its own VNU-HCM: SYNERGY POWER history Looking back at the last years of operation and first years of 2011-2015 strategic plan implementation, the growth and self-affirmation of VNU-HCM could be clearly seen With the vision to become the leading university system of Vietnam reaching out to the world, VNUHCM has determined to build first a university model of advanced viewpoints, awareness, culture and internal administration The confirmation of VNU-HCM model through Higher Education Law 2012, VNU-HCM Decree 2013 and various internal documents laid a legal foundation for the operation of a university system, where each autonomous affiliated institutions share the common goals The member universities and affiliated institutions have operating rhythm via VNU-HCM Board of Regents, VNU-HCM Science and Academic Committee, VNU-HCM Board of Presidents, Board of Rectors at member universities and Board of Directors at other units The system-wide interaction and organization have Assoc.Prof.Dr Phan Thanh Binh, VNU-HCM's President Tet tree planting festival, 2013 AUN-QA Quality Certificate Award Ceremony at VNU-HCM Collaborative agreement signing between VNUHCM and UC Berkeley University, United States VNU-HCM appreciation towards HTV Support Science Conference to provide inputs for Contribute ideas to 1992 Constitution Revision Draft been gradually developed based on a consistent process in managing the system and institutional strategies, developing periodic strategies and annual action plans, and building performance indicators and financial schemes All of these components enabled each institution to promote its competitive advantages in a diverse yet unified system In response to the developmental demand, a pool of new administrators has been trained and developed to contribute to VNU-HCM just as the former generation did As such, the pride and culture of VNU-HCM have been instilled in each institution, each person and each student The development strategy of VNU-HCM is not just about university management and culture It is also about improving academic quality and heightening research activities at VNU-HCM Currently, VNU-HCM is studying and implementing advanced educational approaches (CDIO), English education reform (English language project), and skill development for young citizens to enter the society and make positive contributions (graduand skill development project) In addition to the accomplishments of higher education administration and academic affairs, scientific research activities among faculty and students have been promoted Research groups have involved in different areas, from advanced science (stem cells, nano materials, computational science and technology, biomedical materials, and integrated circuit design…) to social issues (Southern Delta culture and financial market…), and industrial application As a result, VNU-HCM's prestige and position have been heightened, leading to its expanded collaboration with word universities (UC Los Angeles, UC Berkeley, Duke University, Rutgers University, EPFL…) Last but not least, subsequent to the mentioned achievements, VNU-HCM is the university having the largest number of internationally accredited programs in the country (AUN, AUN-DAAD and ABET) A challenge and determination to reform VNU-HCM… Entering New Year 2014 ANNUAL REPORT 2013 VNU-HCM has built an advanced university model upon its accomplishments as well as challenges and limitations The year 2014 is the final phase of the 2011-2015 strategic plan, stepping stone for the 20th anniversary of VNU-HCM founding, period of open information, accelerating scientific advances and the flat world, and preparation ahead of ASEAN Community formation in 2015 Challenges and opportunities Difficulties and advantages Not only has VNU-HCM made efforts for its own sake, but it has to shoulder social responsibilities as a science and education center, which creates and transfers knowledge, trains intellectual citizens, and more importantly, prepares future young leaders for the country In the past, VNU-HCM focused on administration and culture; however, it is now concentrating on education and scientific research As such "Education Quality" is the theme for the year 2014 A theme aims at training young intellectual citizens who possess good life and work skills, and love the Socialist Republic of Vietnam An education quality is reflected through linkages between science and education, between university and society, and between theoretical logics and the beauty of life A theme supports the fulfillment of the University mission towards the country development An agenda facilitates the international standardization of VNU-HCM quality towards common values of global higher education With this theme, VNU-HCM will implement three VNU-HCM: SYNERGY POWER major areas in its academic affairs as follows: - Promoting educational technology based on international standards, focusing on transformation of outcome-based education and educational philosophy - Concentrating on pilot academic programs with high standards of instruction, administration and finance, based on which basic models and principles are applied in system-wide operation - Enhancing programmatic and institutional assessment and accreditation based on regional and international standards Education quality is the culture and value of an educational institution It could not be reached overnight, but resulted from enduring efforts, strong will and significant investment for a long time VNU-HCM is anticipating future challenges and well prepared for the process With the team's strong commitment to noble goals, the educators' responsibilities, and the past's accomplishments, we will fulfill the
