academic freedom in a standard university city ANNUAL REPORT 2015 Message from VNU-HCM President Another year is coming to an end with major milestones This was also the final year of its 2011-2015 strategy The year witnessed a lot of events which showed dedication and efforts of leadership, staff, faculty and students at VNU-HCM It was also an active year to integrate into the world for a continuous development of the University 2015: Renovation and Integration Assoc Prof Dr Phan Thanh Binh The renovation of higher education in particular and education in general would make a direct impact on human resources quality and sustainable growth of the economy For VNU-HCM, renovation was an important need to make its model more complete, and create its international standard administration scheme Therefore, RENOVATION and INTEGRATION were interlinked Renovation was for integration, which would enable it to keep pace with international trends Integration was for renovation, which would help approach modern educational methods In the globalized age, the world is more flat, leading to stronger collaboration and competition As such, international integration becomes a powerful principle for the survival of a higher education system VNUHCM is no exception In order to integrate into the region and the world, VNUHCM has taken strong steps Previously, the University had few proposals for undergraduate and graduate education reform, such as common graduate admissions exam for all majors of the 66 V VN NU U H H CC M M :: SS Y YN N EE RR G GY Y PP O OW W EE RR same field, creditization of academic programs, and diversification of training methods, etc On that journey, it continuously renovate its methods and curriculum to satisfy increasingly high demands of the society Currently the University continue to play the key role in Vietnamese higher education system, who pioneers in implementation of CDIO technology, standardization and improvement of English language teaching and learning quality, and pilot implementation of comprehensive higher education reform, and has got encouraging results to be more confident for international integration VNU-HCM developed advanced training programs at international standards such as Excellent Engineer Training Program (PFIEV), Honors Engineer and Bachelor's Program, and Advanced Programs, etc These programs nurtured future talents Besides, the University focused on standardize and improve the quality of English language teaching and learning, as well as deliver English speaking programs; thus, its students became confident and proactive towards regional and international integration trends Initial achievements on it journey of RENOVATION and INTEGRATION were proved by internationally accredited programs As of November 2015, VNUHCM had 36 programs passing institutional external assessment in compliance with AUNQA, of which 21 passing official external assessment in all majors, from engineering, technology, and economics to social sciences and humanities More significantly, the Biomedical Engineering program of the International University got 5.1/7 scores, which was the second highest grade in Southeast Asia (just behind a program of the Philippines with 5.5 scores), and highest grade in Vietnam The University was the first and only institution in the country having ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology) accredited programs So far it was the leader in the nation in terms of the number of accredited programs, and the number of highly recognized ones in the region Research at VNU-HCM also obtained new achievements The number of publications on international journals was increasing over years as it was 2.26 times higher in 2014 than in 2011 (i.e 245 articles in 2011 vs 566 in 2014) Moreover, there was an increase in quantity and quality of international scientists visiting and working at VNU-HCM International relations of VNU-HCM continuously expanded It closely worked with universities in ASEAN (SMU, Chulalongkorn, Mahidol ), East Asia (Seoul National University - Korea, University of Tokyo Japan ), North America (UC Berkeley, UC Los Angeles, Dukes University ), and Europe (Paris Orsay, Telecom Paristech) in order to renovate and improve the three important areas: Natural Science, Management Science, and Educational Management In the past year, the University discussed with UC Los Angeles the proposal to establish the School of Education Administration and Management at VNU-HCM in 2016 to provide advanced knowledge of education administration for relevant leaders in Vietnam, the region and Asia It was also a member of many international organizations like ASEA-Uninet, AUF, EURECOM, RESCIF, and AUN, etc The development of strategic partner network worldwide enabled VNU-HCM to gradually standardize its activities, improve its resources, A AN NN NU UA A LL RR EE PP O O RR TT 22 00 11 55 77 and improve its administration quality in order to heighten its prestige in the top Asian universities Integration presented not only challenges but also opportunities for VNU-HCM to affirm its position in the global academic setting, and at the same time, to push it and Vietnamese higher education in general to make reforms in line with the world trends 2016: Modern, articulated and integrated curriculum The year 2016 will be the first year to implement VNU-HCM Strategy 2016-2020 with plenty of plans, dreams and ambitions of the faculty and the students It will be the year of integration with the formation of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) In 2016, VNU-HCM has to make a great stride to affirm its education quality, working towards the goal of building the leading institution in Asia where learners' potential can be developed to the fullest Completion and continuous update of the curriculum will be the highlight of its reform With that, the theme for the year 2016 will be CURRICULUM: MODERNITY, ARTICULATION, INTEGRATION with the following core agenda: Developing academic programs in an advanced and systematic way, where knowledge, skills and ethics convene in order to provide high quality human resources for the society, to train excellent individuals, and affirm the position of VNU-HCM Enhancing articulation among academic programs within VNU-HCM based on outcome standards, competency framework, foundation knowledge, and double / dual 88 M:: SSYYNNEERRGGYY PPOOW WEERR VVNNUU HHCCM degree programs Developing curriculum development support units; improving lecturers' capability to implement academic programs effectively, which satisfies outcome standards Promoting evaluation and accreditation of academic programs against regional and international standards to assure training quality; involving in accreditation of educational institutions Facilitating research and technology transfer; strengthening research and training linkages; developing research oriented graduate programs at certain departments, faculties and universities; promoting national and international connections in research to address big problems of economy, society and science Promoting the key role of VNU-HCM in education, research and community outreach for the sake of socioeconomic development of the nation, especially Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, and other provinces Guaranteeing finance for education and training by diversifying income sources from social activities and services; effectively using financial resources and saving costs In 2016, VNU-HCM continues to be the pioneer in renovation, contributing to national development and social progress It will be always the hub for outstanding students, and platform for future global citizens to reach intellectual heights, enabling
