MetabolicDiversityofBacillusstrainsisolatedinVietnam Ngo Tu Thanh and Bui Thi Viet Ha* Hanoi College of Science, Vietnam National University, 334 Nguyen Trai, Hanoi ABSTRACT The genus Bacillus shows an impressive ecological diversity (mesophilic, thermophilic, alkalophilic, halophilic…) as well as metabolicdiversity (production a lot of extracellular active compounds such as enzymes, antibiotics, indol acetic acid, biosurfactants…) For this reason, Bacillus spp has a variety of applications in industry, agriculture and human health The tropical regions are very rich in microorganisms with precious activities In order to investigate the BacillusstrainsofVietnam tropical nature, we isolated them from many sites of the country and then tested them on some activities In our researches, 437 Bacillusstrains were isolated from material samples such as plant leaves and roots, soils, waste waters, sea waters, collected in 20 different geographic sites and habitats in the North, the Central and the South ofVietnam The results are summarized as follow: - The Bacillusstrains were isolated from almost all soil samples collected - The proportion ofstrains having activities of protease, amylase, carboxymethyl cellulase, and chitinase to investigated strains was 51/54, 23/64, 13/34, and 20/20, respectively - The proportion ofstrains showing activities of antifungi, nitrogen fixation, biosurfactant production, and indol acetic acid production to investigated strains was 3/3, 3/3, 5/15 and 86/86, respectively * Corresponding author Tel.: +84-904156999 E-mail: buithivietha@gmail.com - Some strains increased the growth of the cabbage (Brassica oleracea) This increase in growth over control was as follows: the average height of the plants watered with and without culture supernatant liquor ofBacillus sp T20 and Bacillus sp M27 increased by 14% and 19%, the average number of leaves per plant increased by 11.8 and 23.2%, the productivity of plant (kg/m2) increased by 6.8 and 19.7%, respectively - Some other strains showed positive effect on waste waters treatment For example: the BOD5 values of waste water of a milk factory in Hanoi treated aerobically with and without culture supernatant liquor ofBacillus sp T20 were 730 and 1250 mg/L respectively; the BOD5 values of this waste water treated with and without culture supernatant liquor ofBacillus sp TR6 were 610 and 800 mg/L respectively; the BOD5 values of waste water of To Lich river in Hanoi treated with and without diluted culture supernatant liquor ofBacillus sp TH5 were 92 and 165 mg/L respectively The results mentioned above indicated that Bacillus spp was the indigenous bacteria of many habitats and their activities promised a variety of applications However, the practice of current agriculture using much chemic fertilizers and pesticides is thought to make change the microflora So, there is the prospect that we may never have an opportunity to study these organisms A major effort should be mounted to recover and preserve these bacteria before they are lost, and the best strategy is to study them systematically ... supernatant liquor of Bacillus sp T20 and Bacillus sp M27 increased by 14% and 19%, the average number of leaves per plant increased by 11.8 and 23.2%, the productivity of plant (kg/m2) increased by...- Some strains increased the growth of the cabbage (Brassica oleracea) This increase in growth over control was as follows: the average height of the plants watered with and... values of waste water of To Lich river in Hanoi treated with and without diluted culture supernatant liquor of Bacillus sp TH5 were 92 and 165 mg/L respectively The results mentioned above indicated
