ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR ANALYSIS AND FORECAST OF AIR POLLUTION (APPLICATION TO SANTIAGO DE CHILE) Marcelo Arenas 1 , Leopoldo Bertossi 1 , Loreto Bravo 1 , Laura Gallardo 2 , Achim Sydow 3 1 Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Casilla 306, Santiago 22, Chile, e-mail: bertossi@ing.puc.cl 2 Comisión Nacional del Medio Ambiente, Obispo Donoso 6, Santiago 22, Chile, e-mail: lgallardo@conama.cl 3 GMD FIRST, Kekuléstr. 7, D-12489 Berlin, Germany, e-mail: sydow@first.gmd.de KEY WORDS Environmental science, Dynamic models, Model integration, Decision support systems, Forecasting ABSTRACT In Santiago de Chile and other cities in Chile, air pollution is a dramatic problem. An Environmental Information System (EIS) based on air quality models is extremely valuable in order to support users in governmental administrations and industry with forecasting and operative decision-making as well as short to long-term regional planning. Using a model-based EIS for air pollution it is possible (i) to study complex source/receptor relationships, (ii) to optimize air pollution abatement strategies either locally or in a larger region, and (iii) to forecast the air quality for urban and industrial regions. The paper presents issues of a joint project of Universidad Catolica de Chile and GMD FIRST which objectives are the exchange of know how in the fields of EIS design and the use of air quality models, the installation of a model-based EIS for air pollution for Santiago de Chile including the acquisition of necessary input data, the study of the particularities of the Santiago region and the demonstration of the functionality of the EIS in terms of analysis and forecast of air pollution. such as the coastal-lows (Rutllant and Garreaud, 1995). In spring and summer, the relatively larger insolation determines an increase in the depth of the mixed layer counteracting the accumulation of pollutants. Nonetheless, actinic fluxes are also increased during spring and summer accelerating the occurrence of a great deal of photo chemical reactions. Chilean environmental authorities have through the years established monitoring networks for assessing the air quality of Santiago. Especial attention has been paid to health effects. The concentrations of pollutants in Santiago frequently exceed Chilean and international air quality standards. Therefore, an attainment plan has been established (CONAMA-RM, 1997). This plan considers a number of long-term measures intended to prevent and curb the air pollution problems of Santiago and surrounding areas. In addition, a number of short-term measures are put INTRODUCTION The city of Santiago (33.5ºS, 70.8ºW) is located in a basin bounded by the high Andes (4500 m altitude on average) in the central part of Chile. To the east, a lower parallel mountain range to the west (1500 m altitude on average), and two east-to-west mountain chains to the north and south of the basin respectively. Nearly one third of the population of Chile (i.e., about five million people) lives in the metropolitan area of Santiago. Thus private and public transportation, domestic and industrial energy consumption and other activities are brought together and large emissions of pollutants take place (see Table 1). Kathleen M Fox* - kathyfox@comcast.net * Corresponding author Abstract Background: The EQ-5D was used to compare burden experienced by respondents with diabetes and those at risk for diabetes. Methods: A survey including the EQ-5D was mailed to individuals with self-reported diabetes, as well as those without diabetes but with the following risk factors (RFs): (1) abdominal obesity, (2) body mass index ≥ 28 kg/m 2 , (3) dyslipidemia, (4) hypertension, and (5) cardiovascular disease. Non-diabetes respondents were combined into 0–2 RFs and 3–5 RFs. Mean EQ-5D scores were compared across groups using analysis of variance. Multivariable linear regression modeling identified factors affecting respondents' EQ-5D scores. Results: Complete responses were available from >75% of each cohort. Mean EQ-5D index scores were significantly lower for respondents with type 2 diabetes and 3–5 RFs (0.778 and 0.792, respectively) than for those with 0–2 RFs (0.870, p < 0.001 for each); score for respondents with type 2 diabetes was also significantly lower than for those with 3–5 RFs (p < 0.001). Similar patterns were seen for visual analog scale (VAS). For both VAS and index scores, after adjusting for other characteristics, respondents reported decreasing EQ-5D scores as status moved from low to high risk (-6.49 for VAS score and -0.045 for index score) to a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes (-9.75 for VAS score and -0.054 for index score; p < 0.001 vs. 0–2 RFs for all). Conclusion: High-risk and type 2 diabetes groups had similar EQ-5D scores, and both were substantially lower than in low-risk respondents. Introduction It has been estimated that diabetes mellitus affects approximately 21 million people in the U.S. [1]. Compli- cations from diabetes include blindness, kidney disease, nerve damage, arterial disease, abnormal cholesterol lev- els, hypertension, heart disease, and stroke. Heart disease and stroke account for 65% of deaths in patients with dia- betes, with a death rate 2–4 times higher than in adults without diabetes [2]. Diabetes is the fifth leading cause of mortality in the U.S., and is associated with increasing Published: 27 February 2008 Health and Quality of Life Outcomes 2008, 6:18 doi:10.1186/1477-7525-6-18 Received: 14 August 2007 Accepted: 27 February 2008 This article is available from: http://www.hqlo.com/content/6/1/18 © 2008 Grandy and Fox; licensee BioMed Central Ltd. This paper presents an alternative estimation procedure of the generalized steering matrix of the sources in EVESPA, suitable for both beamforming and direction of arrival estimation. It is shown how the estimation of such a matrix can be restricted to that of its corresponding coefficient matrix in the signal subspace, providing both performance enhancement and computational complexity reduction. Performance comparison through numerical s imulations is presented to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed procedure. 1. Introduction The EVESPA algorithm was introduced by G ¨ onen et al. in [1] as an adapted version of VESPA to handle the case of coherent signals. Using fourth-order cumulants, this algorithm properly generates an unbiased estimation of the generalized steering matrix (GSM) B of the sources from which an analysis of the signal parameters can be performed for each coherent group in an independent fashion. The same estimation procedure is also undertaken in [2]asa means of computing the weights of an optimal beamformer capable of maximizing the signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) in a coherent environment. EVESPA has also been considered in [3] under a slight variation for t he problem of direction of arrival (D OA) estimation in mobile communications, and in [4] where it was adapted for a two- dimensional scenario. Steps 1 to 7 in [2]describetheEVESPA algorithm where the M × G matrix B is considered in its whole. However, sincethelatterliesinthesignalsubspace, only the search of its corresponding G × G coefficient matrix proves sufficient. In this paper, we present a new estimation procedure of B based on this principle which is shown to bring significant performance enhancement both in terms of computational complexity and quality estimation. Throughout the paper, “ ∗  and “†  are, respectively, used as the conjugate and Hermitian transpose operators, and nonscalar quantities such as vectors and matrices are labeled in bold. 2. Background Theory In this section we recall the main guidelines of the EVESPA algorithm [1, 2], as it will be assumed that the reader has a sufficient knowledge on the matter. The signal model used in this paper is the same as that used by the original authors, namely, x k = Bu k + n k , (1) where x k , B, u k ,andn k are, respectively, the M × 1vectorof the received signals, the M × G generalized steering matrix of the sources, the G × 1 elementar y sources vector, and the M × 1 additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) vector, which is assumed symmetric.
