correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42

Although they are an inexpensive supplier of vitamins, minerals, and high quality protein, eggs also contain a high level of blood cholesterol, one of the major causes of heart disease One egg yolk, in fact, contains a little more

than two-thirds of the suggested daily cholesterol limit This knowledge has caused egg sales to plummet in recent

Trang 4

years, which in turns has brought about the development of several alternatives to eating regular eggs One alternative

is to eat substitute eggs

These egg substitutes are not really eggs, but they look somewhat like eggs when they are cooked They have the advantage of having lower cholesterol rates, and they can be scrambled or used in baking One disadvantage, however, is that they are not good for frying, poaching, or boiling A second alternative to regular eggs is a new type

of egg, sometimes called “designer" eggs These eggs are produced by hens that are fed low-fat diets consisting of ingredients such as canola oil, flax, and rice bran In spite of their diets, however, these hens produce eggs that contain the same amount of cholesterol as regular eggs Yet, the producers of these eggs claim that eating their eggs will not raise the blood cholesterol in humans

Eggs producers claim that their product has been portrayed unfairly They cite scientific studies to back up

their claim And, in fact, studies on the relationship between eggs and human cholesterol levels have brought mixed

results It may be that it is not the type of egg that is the main determinant of cholesterol but the person who is

eating the eggs Some people may be more sensitive to cholesterol derived from food than other people In fact, there is evidence that certain dietary fats stimulate the body's production of blood cholesterol Consequently, while it still makes sense to limit one's intake of eggs, even designer eggs, it seems that doing this without regulating dietary fat will probably not help reduce the blood cholesterol level

Question 36 What is the main purpose of this passage?

A to introduce the idea that dietary fat increases the blood cholesterol level

B to convince people to eat "designer" eggs and egg substitutes

C to inform people about the relationship between eggs and cholesterol

D to persuade people that eggs are unhealthy and should not be eaten

Question 37 As used in paragraph 1, the word plummet refers to which of the following?

A minerals B vitamins C cholesterol D canola oil

Question 39 According to the passage, what has been the cause for changes in the sale of eggs?

A increasing price B a shrinking market C dietary changes in hens D decreased production

Question 40 According to the passage, egg substitutes cannot be used to make any of the following types of eggs EXCEPT

A poached B boiled C scrambled D fried

Question 41 What does the author mean by the phrase mixed results in paragraph 3?

A The results are inconclusive

D The results are blended

Question 42 According to the author, which of the following may reduce the blood cholesterol?

Niagara Falls, one of the most famous North American natural wonders, has long been a popular tourist

destination Tourists today flock to see the two falls that actually constitute Niagara Falls: the 173-foot Horseshoe

Falls on the Canadian side of the Niagara River in the Canadian province of Ontario and the 182-foot-high American Falls on the US side of the river in the state of New York Approximately 85 per cent of the water that goes over the falls actually goes over Horseshoe Falls, with the rest going over American Falls

Trang 5

Most visitors come between April and October, and it is quite a popular activity to take a steamer out onto the river and right up to the base of the falls for a closer-up view It is also possible to get a spectacular view of the falls from the strategic locations along the Niagara River, such as Prospect Point or Table Rock, or from one of the four observation towers which have heights up to 500 feet

Tourists have been visiting Niagara Falls in large numbers since the 1800s; annually visitation now averages above ten million visitors per year Because of concern that all these tourists would inadvertently destroy the natural beauty of the scenic wonder, the state of New York in 1885 created Niagara Falls Park in order to protect the land surrounding American Falls A year later Canada created Queen Victoria Park on the Canadian side of the Niagara,

around Horseshoe Falls With the area surrounding the falls under the jurisdiction of government agencies, appropriate steps could be taken to preserve the pristine beauty of the area
