applying the assessments, gather the following items: ✓ ✓ ✓ ✓ a a a a copy of the assessment for each child box of crayons in a variety of colors pencil, an eraser, and a pen list of the children to be assessed While completing the assessments, follow these steps: • • • • • • Separate the children into small groups Provide the children with safe activities, such as playing with playdough or plastic blocks Play the instrumental version of the Bebop Storysong from the unit you are assessing Sit at a table or desk with an extra chair for the child that is being assessed Invite the first child on the list to sit next to you at the table or desk Ask the child to complete the following tasks, according to the unit being assessed Assessment and Development • • • • • Point to and name the classroom objects and place at school Take a red crayon and color the book Count the crayons and circle the correct number Find the circle and draw around it with the red crayon Stand up and sit down circle the carrots Take a purple crayon and circle the grapes Find all the tomatoes and color them with a red crayon Count the tomatoes and circle the correct number Pretend to eat, mix, and slice Assessment and Development • • • • • Point to and name the community helpers and the places in town Connect the pictures using different colors Find the squares and circle them with a purple crayon Count the squares and circle the correct number Close and open eyes • While the child is doing the activities and following the instructions that you are giving, fill in the assessment chart by putting a check mark (✓) in the box that reflects the child’s ability in each skill After assessing each child, complete the following tasks: • • • • Congratulate the child’s effort Put a stamp or sticker on the copy of the assessment to encourage the child’s progress Add suggestions for practicing or developing a skill in the “Next steps” column Keep the assessment in a portfolio as evidence
