As we all know, English is a popular language in the world, and it is also the way leading to international integration. Therefore, in 2008, the Prime Minister approved the project entitled “Teaching and Learning Foreign Language in the National Education System, Period 2008 2020 with the aims of “Completely change teaching and learning method in national education system with the aim that most of the young graduated from vocational school, college and university can use foreign language indecently, confidently in communication, learning and working in integrated, multilanguage, muticultural environment by 2020; make foreign language the strong point of Vietnamese” From 2013 – 2014, Binh Dinh Department of Education and Training carried out teaching and learning using the new textbook set of English National Foreign Language Project 2020 which has completely new content and format for grade 10. The lesson contents are more diversified. The format is more beautiful with vivid photos. This is both benefit and difficulty for teachers in teaching process because teachers have to spend more time researching the lesson for not demo teaching for the new textbook, no other reference except for teacher’s book, not much discussing or exchanging experience between teachers in same location because there are very few schools carry out this. With the new textbook, new teaching method must be used. Students play the centeredrole who actively study, discover and create new thing while teachers are just motivators. Therefore, beside good knowledge, English level of C1, teachers must be creative in teaching process to make an easy, effective learning time which attract students’ attention and help them work well in class.Being a teacher assigned to first teach the new textbook of English 10, I also faced with many challenges in teaching time. In which, the skill catching me a lot of attention is Reading because of numerous vocabularies and informative contents. Therefore, students have difficulty understanding the content of the reading passage if they cannot master the meaning of new words. As a result, they easily get bored. So, how to help students learn new words fast to master main idea of the reading passage to develop their language ability and apply well in similar lessons? Being aware of this urgent problem, I have a great desire to study to make students learn Reading lessons effectively. That is the reason why I choose the topic “Applying a variety of language games and teaching techniques to create motivation and develop language ability for students in Reading periods of English 10, National Foreign Language Project 2020” for my initiative after many times discussing with my colleagues, referring books and changing teaching method. The initiative includes 3 parts for each Reading lesson:1.Language Games applied in the Postreading in class2. Teaching technique to summarize the text:3.Further exercises to reinforce students’ knowledge

Hotel beach lights confuse turtles hatching on the beach Their instincts direct them towards the light, which is usually the moon reflecting on the ocean Awareness of these problems rose Turtle protection zones were established in many areas; laws regarding lighting were created 80% of Costa Rican beaches are developed Turtle nesting was greatly affected, further endangering many species Citizens in nations like Sweden, Denmark and the U.S have provided money to preserve tropical forests in Costa Rica Many acres of land have been put into private or national parks and reserves Biodiversity has been maintained and international attention about the importance of biodiversity has occurred Many research projects are in progress which may find new medicines Central American tropical forests provide winter homes for birds commonly found in North and South America Forests reduce soil erosion This protects rivers Forests provide oxygen for the planet and clean up air pollution By Tran Thi Lap from Quang Trung High School Foreign money has actually “bid up” the price of land This makes it difficult for local farmers, called campesinos, to retain land for agricultural use, as they may want to sell out their farm land for a one time “payoff “ Two problems occur then: the people have no way to earn a living and, if less is grown, food becomes more expensive and more would need to be imported Currently, half of Costa Rica’s land is in some type of private or public park or reserve Page 47 Initiative Academic Year: 2015-2016 Since 1993, tourism is the number one source of income for Costa Rica More money is available for a variety of uses Tourism can be a fickle business; it’s possible that tourists could tire of a place and want to go somewhere new; bad publicity could seriously damage a tourist industry and many people’ s livelihoods and social services would be affected Women formed cooperatives to create souvenirs like hand painted T-shirts and woodcrafts for tourists to buy Some women’s cooperatives have become an important source of money and self esteem for women in an area where they have been undervalued and under-educated Working outside the home has created changes and sometimes conflict and envy within the home and community; traditional child care practices have been changed Volunteers come to Costa Rica each year to build and maintain hiking trails in parks and reserves Volunteers work for free and often pay their own way Free labor is especially valuable in a country with restricted monetary resources Like tourists, volunteers also need places to sleep and food to eat, which means more land is developed Local people may not be able to find work and not learn to maintain the trails 10 Costa Ricans who once worked on banana plantations find higher paying jobs with less physical work by working in the tourist industry Most people want to earn higher wages They want to have an easier day than working from dawn to dark under very hot and dirty conditions in rural areas By Tran Thi Lap from Quang Trung High School If the price of labor becomes too high, the banana industry may cease to exist or pass along higher costs to customers Page 48 Initiative Academic Year: 2015-2016 Capacity to apply the solution: I have applied these above language games into the periods as well as the assignments I found that our students became more excited, understood the lessons better and their vocabulary increased considerably Particularly, these games created a useful way of learning beacause the students had opportunities not only to study but also to play in class as well as everywhere For homework, we can use these games for all students At present, most of my students are good, so I ask them to homework individually However, in the coming time, when the new textbook is taught widely, we can ask the students to homework in group, in pair or individually We may give different suggestions and requirements according to the students’ level At the same time, teaching techniques and the lesson system can be applied to another period, and we may change according to the lesson content These game can be used in activities such as Warm – up, Production Consolidation Designs for homework activities helped the students develop their mind, improve their reading skill, remember more vocabulary and understand the lesson well because the students know how to systematize knowledge in a logical and scientific way That the students can a wide range of activities can help the students deal with exercises of reading comprehension in the coming exam The students will save time and money to practise this skill when they sit for entrance exam or when they take exam for certificates to apply for a job What’s more, these activities are relatively short and simple, so it is not timeconsuming to prepare for them If the teacher not use projector, they can print on A4, A3 paper to save for the following school year For mind map, the teacher may ask their students to draw on the A or A1 papers and stick the papers on the wall so that the students can see them easily Social economic benefits: The advantage of these language games is to create attraction and stimulation for the learners to practise English in the relaxing way and to consolidate vocabulary By Tran Thi Lap from Quang Trung High School Page 49 Initiative Academic Year: 2015-2016 After applying new solution, I have got satisfactory results: - 60/64 students felt interested in reading period - 52/64 students remembered vocabulary and understood the lesson better - Most students became more active in communicative activities - Results of students’ level of English: Lớp Sĩ Khảo sát ban đầu 64 a wide variety of ways to stimulate learners with the aim to raise teaching and learning quality For me, when using games in teaching, I find the students are more interested in the lesson, the class atmosphere are more excited and the students have more opportunities to practise English During English period, making noise is unavoidable, but it is useful The noise may affect the class nearby because when playing, the students are so sensitive and active that they can not control themselves, sometimes laugh out loud or clap their hands… Therfore, the teachers must be active and flexible to deal with problems occuring during activites in order to develop the effectiveness of the games In addition, to meet the requirements of English teaching and learning renovation according to National Foreign Language Project 2020, we need to design more activities outside the textbooks and exercise books as long as they are suitable to the students’ level - develop their mind and meet examination requirements By Tran Thi Lap from Quang Trung High School Page 50 Initiative Academic Year: 2015-2016 This study has applied to the period Reading in the English 10 textbook Further studies can be
