It is a characteristic of human nature that people like to get together and have fun, and people
live during America's frontier days were no exception. However, because life was hard and the
necessities of day-to-day living took up their time, it was common for recreation to be combined
with activities necessary for survival. One example of such a form of recreation was logrolling.
Many frontier areas were heavily wooded, and in order to settle an area it was necessary to move
the trees. A settler could cut down the trees alone, but help was needed to move the cut trees. After
a settler had cut a bunch of trees, he would then invite is neighbours over for a logrolling.
A logrolling is a community event where families got together for a combination of work and
fun. The women would bring food and have a much needed and infrequent opportunity to relax and
chat with friends, the children would play together exuberantly, and the men would hold lively
competitions that involved rolling logs from place to place as quickly as possible. This was a day of

On February 3, 1956, Autherine Lucy became the first African-American student to attend the
University of Alabama, although the dean of women refused to allow Autherine to live in a
university dormitory. White students rioted in protest of her admission, and the federal government
had to assume command of the Alabama National guard in order to protect her. Nevertheless, on
her first day in class, Autherine bravely took a seat in the front row. She remembered being
surprised that the professor of the class appeared not to notice she was even in class. Later, she

favour of her right to attend the university. For protection, Autherine was taken in and out of
classroom buildings by the back door and driven from class to class by an assistant to the university
president. The students continued to riot, and one day, the windshield of the car she was in was
broken. University officials suspended her, saying it was for her own safety. When her attorney
issued a statement in her name protesting her suspension, the university used it as grounds for
expelling her for insubordination. Although she never finished her education at the University of
Alabama, Autherine Lucy's ourage was an inspiration to African-American students who followed

Saving energy means saving money. Home owners and renters know this basic fact, but they
often don't know what kinds of adjustments they can make in their homes and apartments that will
result in savings.
For those willing to spend some time and money to reap long-term energy savings, an energy
audit is the way to go. An energy auditor will come into your home and assess its energy efficiency.
The auditor will pinpoint areas of your home that use the most energy and offer solutions to lower
your energy use and costs. Trained energy auditors know what to look for and can locate a variety
of flaws that may be resulting in energy inefficiency, including inadequate insulation, construction
flaws, and uneven heat distribution.
There are quicker and less costly measures that can be taken as well. One way to save money is
to replace incandescent lights with fluorescents. This can result in a savings of more than 50% on
your monthly lighting costs.
When it's time to replace old appliances, it's wise to spend a bit more for an energy-efficient
model, and be sure that you are taking advantage of energy-saving settings already on your current
refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine, or dryer.
Windows provide another opportunity to cut your energy costs. Caulk old Windows that might
be leaky to prevent drafts, and choose double-paned windows if you're building an addition or
replacing old windows.
Most areas of your home or apartment offer opportunities to save energy and money. The
results are significant and are well worth the effort.

Man is a land animal, but he also closely tied to the sea. Throughout history, the sea has served
the needs of man. The sea has provided man with food an convenient way to travel to many parts of
the world. Today, nearly two thirds of the world's population live within 80 kilometres of the sea
coast.
In the modern technological world, the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive.
Resources on land are beginning to be used up. The sea, however, still can be hoped to supply
many man's needs. The list of riches of the sea yet to be developed by man's technology is
impressive. Oil and gas explorations have been carried out for nearly 30 years. Valuable amounts
of minerals exist on the ocean floor are ready to be mined.
Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food. The culture of fish
and shellfish is an ancient skill practised in the past mainly by Oriental people.
Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. Experts believe that the warm
temperature of the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship. Ocean currents
and waves offer possible use as a source of energy.
Technology is enabling man to explore ever more deeply under the sea. The development of
strong, new materials has made this possible. The technology to harvest the sea continues to
improve. Experts believe that by the year 2020 the problems that prevent us from exploiting fully
the food, minerals, and energy source of the sea will be largely solved.

headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the agency inherited the mandate and resources of its
predecessor, the Health Organization.

development and distribution of safe and effective vaccines, pharmaceutical diagnostics, and drugs.
After over 2 decades of fighting smallpox, the WHO declared in 1980 that the disease had been
eradicated - the first disease in history to be eliminated by human effort.
The WHO is nearing success in developing vaccines against malaria and aims to eradicate polio

HIV/AIDS Tool kit for Zimbabwe making it an international standard. In addition to its work in
eradicating disease, the WHO also carries out various health-related campaigns, for example, to
boost the consumption of fruits and vegetables worldwide and to discourage tobacco use.

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) safeguards hundreds of species around the world, but we focus
species attention on our flagship species: giant pandas, tigers, endangered whales and dolphins,
rhinos, elephant, marine turtles and great apes. These species not only need species measures and
extra protection in order to survive, they also serve as “umbrella” species: helping them helps
numerous other species that live in the same habitats.
In addition to our flagship animals, we work to protect numerous species in peril around the
world that live within our priority eco-regions. Laree predators like snow leopards and grizzly
bears, migratory species like whooping cranes and songbirds, and a host of other species facing
threats also benefit from WWF’ s conservation efforts. Our wildlife trade experts at “traffic” work
to ensure that trade wildlife products, doesn’t harm a species, while also fighting against illegal and
unsustainable trade.
WWF is known for acting sound science. Science leads and guides us strategies and
approaches, from the way to restore tigers in viable, breed population to decide which areas need
protection the most.

Many people buy and use copied programs for their computer. This illegal copying of computer
software has become a huge industry because the software is much cheaper than the original
programs.
Illegal software can be found on sale in any part of the world, although it is more readily
available in Asia than in Western countries. Software manufacturers have been trying to get
governments to stop this copying or "pirating". In an attempt to get rid of "software pirates“, police
have seized software from stores and fined the owners. This has been partially successful, but
manufacturers are still losing a lot of money.
By using this kind of software, computer owners risk damaging their computer. Illegally copied
software can carry computer viruses which could wipe out information stored on the computer's
hard drives.

The search for alternative sources of energy has led in various directions. Many communities
are burning garbage and other biological waste products to produce electricity. Converting waste
products to gases or oil is also an effective way to dispose of waste.
Experimental work is being done to derive synthetic fuels from coal, oil shale and coal tars.
But today, that process has proven expensive. Other experiments are underway to harness power
with giant windmills. Geothermal power, heat from the earth, is also being tested.
Some experts expect utility companies to revive hydroelectric power derived from steams and
rivers. Fifty years ago hydroelectric power provided one third of the electricity used in the United
States, but today it supplies only four percent. The oceans are another potential source of energy.
Scientists are studying ways to convert the energy of ocean currents, tides and waves to electricity.
Experiments are also underway to make use of temperature differences in ocean water to produce
energy.

Like schools in Britain and other English speaking countries, those in the U.S have also always
stressed "character" or "social" skills through extracurricular activities, including organised sports.
Because most schools start at around 8 o'clock every morning and classes often do not finish until 3
or 4 o'clock in the afternoon, such activities mean that many students do not return home until the
early evening. There is usually a very broad range of extracurricular activities available. Most
schools, for instance, publish their own student newspapers, and some have their own radio
stations. Almost all have student orchestras, bands, and choirs.
Many different sports are also available and most schools share their facilities - swimming
pools, tennis courts, tracks, and stadiums - with the public. Often the students themselves organize
and support school activities and raise money through car washes, baby-sitting, or by mowing
lawns. Parents and local business often also help a group that, for example, has a chance to go to a
state music competition, to compete in some sports championship, or take a camping trip. Such
activities not only give pupils a chance to be together outside of normal classes, they also help
develop a feeling of "school spirit" among the students and in the community.

Although English is spoken in many countries, it is not (31)…….. an international language.
This is because it gives an unfair advantage to countries, like the USA and Britain, which use

on the answer sheet.
We know that every year less than 100 people are attacked by sharks and about 5 to 10 of these
people die. But, let’s look at the other side of the story - How many sharks do people kill ? Well I
think you already know this : People kill many more sharks. Every year, people hunt and kill
thousands of sharks. One reason people kill sharks is for sport; they hunt them just for fun. Some
people started to have contests to see who kill the most sharks or the biggest sharks. Another reason
that people kill sharks is for food. In some countries, such as the United States and Great Britain,
shark meat is a popular food. In other countries, such as China, people use shark fins to make soup.
Because so many people like to eat shark, fishing boats catch a lot of sharks to sell for food.
So, for both of these reasons, people are killing many sharks. Some biologists are getting
worried that the number of sharks is getting too small. That’s why many biologists think we should
stop killing so many sharks, and instead try to protect them - or else some day they may all be gone.
Some countries have already passed some laws to help protect sharks. The United States, for
example, has passed laws that limit the number of sharks that people can kill for food or for sport.
So even though some people like to hunt sharks, we do need to protect them.
36. The number of sharks in the world is _____.

We are in an energy crisis and we will have to do something quickly. Fossil fuels (coal, oil, and
gas) are rapidly running out. The tragedy is that fossil fuels are far too valuable to waste on the
production of electricity. Just think of all the things you can make from oil! If you don't start
conserving these things now, it will be too late. And nuclear power is the only real alternative. We
are getting some electricity from unclear power-station already. If we invest in further research
now, we'll be ready to face the future. There's been a lot of protest lately against nuclear power some people will protest at anything - but nuclear power-stations are not as dangerous as some
people say. It's far more dangerous to work down a coal-mine or on a North Sea oil-rig. Safety
regulations are very strict.

Almost all the energy on the earth comes from the sun. Heat from the sun makes the earth
warm enough for life. Plants use the sun’s energy to live and grow. Plants give off a gas called
oxygen. Animals eat plants and breathe oxygen. Animals need plants in order to live, and plants
need the sun. You use plants to create heat and energy. You can burn wood from trees. You can
burn fossil called coal, gas, and oil. Fossil fuels formed deep underground from plants
and animals that died millions of years ago.
The sun’s energy can also do harm. Too much sunlight can burn your skin, causing
sunburn. Harmful rays from the sun can also cause a disease called skin cancer. Looking right
at the sun can harm your eyes. You need to be careful of the sun. The center of the sun is
called the core, which is extremely hot. All the energy of the sun comes from the nuclear
reactions in its core. It takes a long time for the energy from the core to reach the surface of the
earth-about 170,000 years!

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 40.
Will people still read books 100 years from now? A few years ago, many people would have
said no. It seemed likely that computers and the internet would replace books. Now, however, most
experts think that books are here to stay.
There are a number of reasons why computers will not replace books entirely. One reason is
that books on paper are much cheaper than computers. And books do not need a power source. You
can read a book for as long as you want and wherever you want. You never have to worry about
losing power. Also, many people feel more comfortable reading words in a book than reading
words on a computer screen because it is less tiring to the eyes.
Will books in the future be exactly the same as the books you can buy today? The answer to
that question is no. In the future, you may only need to buy one book. With this one book, you will
be able to read novels, plays, and newspapers. It will look like today’s books, but it will be
electronic.
One of the people working on the book of the future is Professor Joseph Jacobson from
Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Professor Jacobson’t electronic book will have a small
button on the side. When you press the button, words will instantly appear on the page. When you
want to read a different story, you can push the button again and a new story will quickly appear.

become wetter or drier. It may become warmer or cooler. If the animals cannot change, or adapt, to
the new climate, they die.

BODY LANGUAGE AND CULTURAL DIFFERENCES
The body language people use often communicates more about their feelings than the words they
are saying. We use body movements, hand gestures, facial expressions, and changes in our voice to
communicate with each other. Although some body language is universal, many gestures are
culturally specific and may mean different things in different countries. If you want to give
someone the nod in Bulgaria, you have to nod your head to say no and shake it to say yes - the
exact opposite of what we do! In Belgium, pointing with your index finger or snapping your
fingers at someone is very rude. In France, you shouldn’t rest your feet on tables or chairs.
Speaking to someone with your hands in your pockets will only make matters worse. In the Middle
East, you should never show the soles of your feet or shoes to others as it will be seen as a grave
insult. When eating, only use your right hand because they use their left hands when going to the
bathroom. In Bangladesh, the ‘thumbs-up’ is a rude sign. In Myanmar, people greet each other by
clapping, and in India, whistling in public is considered rude. In Japan, you should not blow your
nose in public, but you can burp at the end of a meal to show that you have enjoyed it. The ‘OK’
sign (thumb and index finger forming a circle) means ‘everything is good’ in the West, but in
China it means nothing or zero. In Japan, it means money, and in the Middle East, it is a rude
gesture.
