UNIT 1 : MY NEW SCHOOL I. Objectives. - By the end of the unit, students will be able to: + Read for specific information about schools, read e-mails and webpages. + Listen to get information about school activities/ what students do at school. + Talk about and describe a school and school activities. + Write a webpage for students’ school and know how to use punctuation. + Use and practice vocabulary about school things and activities. + Use and practice the present simple and the present continuous; Verb ( study, have, do, play ) + Noun. + Pronounce correctly the sounds /ə ʊ / and / ʌ / in isolation and in context. - Students will be developed 4 skills: speaking , listening , reading and writing. - Students will be educated to love their school more and they will like learning English more and more. II.Teaching aids. - Textbook, lesson plans, board, chalks, cues, posters, real objects, pictures, stereo and the CD record. III. Proceduce. Lesson 1: Getting started Lesson 2: A closer look 1 Lesson 3: A closer look 2 Lesson 4: Communication Lesson 5: Skills 1 Lesson 6: Skills 2 Lesson 7: Looking back + Project Date of preparing: Period: 1 UNIT 1 : MY NEW SCHOOL LESSON 1 : GETTING STARTED ( P. 6 - 7) A.OBJECTIVES: - By the end of this lesson, students will be able to listen and read the dialogue among Phong, Phong’s Mum, Vy and Duy to understand the details then do some more tasks. + Vocabulary: knock, special, excited, smart, compass, calculator. 1 + Grammar : Use and practice the expressions: Oh dear, You’ll see, Come in, Sure. - Skills: Practice and develope lisening and reading and speaking skills . - Political thought and moral sence: Educate students to love their new school and they will be interested in learning English more. B.TEACHING AIDS: . - Textbook , teacher’s book , lesson plan , board , chalks, pictures, posters, stereo and the CD record. C. METHODS: Rub out and remember, presentation dialogue, T/F statements, role - play, matching and transformation writing. D. CONTENTS: I.Oganization: Class Date of teaching Absent students 6A 6B II. Revision / Warmer: * Greetings. - Teacher (T) introduces herself then T asks students (Ss) to introduce themselves. - Ss introduce themselves ( three or four students). III. New lesson: Step1: Presentation. * Vocabulary: - knock (v): gõ cửa (situation) - special (adj): đặc biệt (example) - excited (adj) phấn chấn, phấn khích (situation) - smart (adj): bảnh bao, sáng sủa (example) - compass (n): com - pa (realia) - calculator (n): cái máy tính. (realia) * Concept check: Rubout and Remember - Each time, T rubs out one English word but not Vietnamese . - Ss chorus the words which T has rubbed . - T and Ss do the same with another word . - When all the words are rubbed out , Ss chorus all the words one time . - T asks Ss to come to the board and write again all the words which he / she has rubbed . ( one S can write one word only ) . 2 - T corrects . - T asks Ss to coppy down . * Presentation dialogue: - T sets the scene by showing the picture on p.8 then asks ss some questions . - What is Phong doing? - He’s having breakfast. - Who are Vy and Duy? - Phong’s classmates/ friends. - It’s a special day. Why? - The first day at school. - T gives the instructions: You look at the dialogue then listen to the tape. - T turns on the tape twice. - Ss listen and read. - T calls two good students to read again the dialogues. - T asks the others to correct. - T corrects ss' mistakes. * T/F Statements - T shows the poster with 5 statements on the board. - T runs through all the sentences. 1. Vy and Duy are early. 2. Phong is eating. 3. Duy is Phong’s friends. 4. Duy lives near Phong. 3 Phong Duy Vy Phong’s Mum 5. Phong is wearing a school uniform. - T gives the instructions: Read again the dialogue and decide which sentences are true (T) and which ones are false (F). - T checks ss' understanding. - Ss work independently then compare with their partners in their tables. - T gets Ss’ answers then corrects. + Answer key : 1. T 2. T 3. F 4. T 5. F * Expressions - T shows the poster on the board with 4 expressions. 1. Oh dear. 2. You’ll see. 3. Come in 4. Sure - T gives the instructions: Read again the dialogue then underline the expressions above. - T models the first one. - T checks Ss’ understanding. - T asks Ss to tell the meaning of the four expressions above. If they can’t, T can explain. 1. Oh dear. => Used to express surprise (negative) 2. You’ll see. = You’ll find out. 3. Come in. => Used to invite somebody in. 4. Sure = Yes / Alright. Step2: Practice: *Activity 1: Role - plays: - T gives the instructions: You work with your partners use the one expression for one short conversation. 1. Oh dear. 2. You’ll see. 3. Come in 4. Sure - T models the first one. + Example exchange: A: Oh dear. I forgot my calculator. B: That’s OK, you can borrow mime. A: Thankyou. - T checks Ss’ understanding. - Ss work in pairs to make the conversations. 4 - T calls some pairs to speak out. - T asks other students to correct then T corrects. * Activity 2: Matching.(Part 3 p.7) - T shows the picture on page 7 then runs through the pictures of the school things and also the 10 words. - T gives the instructions: Match the words with the school things. - T models the first one: 1- b. pencil sharpener - T checks Ss’ understandings. - Ss work individually in about 2 minutes then they compare with their partners. - T gets Ss’ answers by dividing the class into 2 groups. One student can write one answer for each turn. - T corrects, gives marks then praises the winner. + Answer key: 1- b. pencil sharpener 6 - i. pencil case 2- e. compass 7 - f. notebook 3- j. school bag 8 - a. bicycle 4- d. rubber 9 - g. ruler 5- c. calculator 10 - h. textbook. - T plays the recording, Ss listen and repeat all the words (twice). - T calls one or two students to read again the words. Step 3: Production: * Transformation writing (Part 2 p. 7) - T asks Ss to look at the poem in part 2 p. 7. - T plays the recording twice. - Ss listen then read the poem with the right intonation and rhythm. - T shows the poster with the poem on the board that has some underlined parts. - T runs through the poster. - T gives the instructions: You work in pairs and write a poem about your partners. You may change the underlined parts. Get up, Nam. Get up, Nam. You’re going back to school Your friends are going back to school, too. The new school year starts today. 5 You’ve got nice shoes You’ve got new pens Your friends are on their way. - T models one. Summary: - T asks ss to repeat the main contents of the lesson : vocabulary, some expressions and the details of the dialogue. V.
