UNIT 11 : TRAVELING AROUND VIETNAM I. Objectives : By the end of the lesson, students will be able: - to express interest . - to make and respond to formal requests . - to make suggestions . - to complete a narrative. II. Teaching aids : Textbook, pictures, posters, word cards, cassette . III. Procedure : - Lesson 1 : (Getting started + Listen and read ) Reading a dialogue for details about how to express interest . - Lesson 2 : (Speak + Language Focus 3) Practice in making and responding to formal requests using "mind". - Lesson 3 : (Listen + Read 1) Listening and reading for details about place directions and places of interest. - Lesson 4: (Read 2 + Language Focus 4) Reading for information about places of interest in Vietnam and making suggestions. Further practice with "mind". - Lesson 5 : (Write) Complete a narrative. - Lesson 6 : (Language Focus 1,2) Practice in using "-ed" and "-ing" participle. Week: 23 Date of preparing: Period 66 UNIT 11 : TRAVELING AROUND VIETNAM LESSON 1 : GETTING STARTED, LISTEN AND READ A. Objectives : By the end of the lesson, students will be able to read a dialogue for details and to use some expressions to express their interest . B. Teaching aids :text books, posters, pictures, cassette . C. Methods : Jumbled words, Guiding questions, T/F Sentences, Discussion. D. Contents : I. ORGANIZATION (1 minute) Date of teaching : 8A : Absent students: 8B : Steps/ Activities Content II. WARM UP (5 minutes) Jumbled words : - Write the topic “ Places of interest “ on the board - Ask each team to connect the words to make the right phrases for places of interest and write them on the board as fast as possible Answer key: Ngo Mon Gate , Ha long Bay , The Temple Literature , Nha rong Harbor . Getting Started : - Ask Ss to open their books and match the names with the pictures - Call on some Ss to give their answers - Call some Ss to read the proper names aloud . III. NEW LESSON (22 minutes) Step 1 : Pre Reading: 1. Vocabulary : 1. Something such as grain , rice , fruit … is grown in one season . 2. It is used to make sugar . 3. (translation) 4. The drive takes 40 minutes .It 's a forty-minute drive. - Ask sts to notice that a plural noun must be changed to the singular form when preceding the noun it modifies in a noun phrase. - Have sts drill some more: ( oral => writing). Sts : - listen - listen and repeat (chorally then individually) => copy. * Checking vocabulary : Rub out and remember: 2. Guiding questions : - Set the scene and put the chart with questions on the board - Ask Ss to think about the questions in a few minutes - Have Ss listen to the tape while reading the dialogue - Get Ss to work in pairs to answer the questions - Call on some pairs to give their answers - Feedback : a. Step 2 : While Reading: - Ask Ss to listen to the tape and say out True or False - Read the sentences aloud and call on some Ss to answer , then have them correct the false sentences and get them to write in their notebooks . - Call on some groups of five to practice the dialogue in front of class - Correct their pronunciation Step 3 : Post Reading: Discussion : - Ask Ss to read the dialogue again , discuss with them and ask them to pick out the sentences containing the situations mentioned. IV. SUMMARY (1 minute) - Reading a dialogue about how to express interest . V. HOMEWORK (1 minute) 1. Learn by heart new words and use some expressions to express their interest . 2. WARM UP (5 minutes) Chatting : - Show a letter and ask Ss some questions : + What is this ? ( a letter) + Where can I post it to my friend ? (at the post office) + How can I post it ? ( stick stamp on it) + How much ? (800 dong) + Is it more expensive when I send a parcel ? (Yes, Of course) + Have you ever sent a letter or a parcel ? => Lead in the new lesson (today we are going to talk about how to send parcels or letters. Let's start with the new words). III. NEW LESSON (35minutes) Step 1 : Presentation : 1. Vocabulary : (letter or parcel sent by air ) (letter or parcel sent by bus , train or ship ) (translation) 1. Reading comprehension : - Set the scene “ Mrs Kim wants to send a parcel to Qui Nhon , so she has to go to the post office .” - Give Ss some questions and ask them to read the dialogue and find out the answers - Get sts to work in pairs to compare their answers. - Give feedback. a. Mrs Kim send the parcel surface mail because it is much cheaper . b. Her parcel is five kilograms . c. She pays 19, 200 dongs . Step 2 : Practice : - Call on a student to play role of Mrs Kim and practice the dialogue with teacher ( clerk ) . - Call on some pairs to practice the dialogue. Correct their pronunciation - Ask sts to practice the dialogue in pairs. Step 3 : Production : - Set the scene and ask Ss to make the dialogue. - Ask Ss to make the dialogue between Lan and the clerk in the post office . - Elicit and encourage Ss to make the dialogue themselves. Expected dialogue Clerk : Can I help you ? Mrs Lan : I want to send a letter to Kontom . Clerk : Do you want to send it airmail or surface mail ? Mrs Lan : I send it airmail . How much is it ? IV. SUMMARY (2 minutes) - Talking about how to send a parcel or to post a letter. V. HOMEWORK (2 minutes) - Copy the three dialogues in their notebooks - Prepare the next lesson . b).
