Appendix 5.1 MAP Algorithm 175 Appendix 5.1 MAP Algorithm We present a MAP decoding algorithm for a system depicted in Fig. 5.32. In order to simplify the analysis, the following description of the MAP algorithm is specific to (n, 1, m) binary convolutional codes, though it could easily be generalized to include k/n rate convolutional codes, as well as decoding of block codes. A binary message sequence, denoted by c and given by c = (c 1 ,c 2 , ,c t , ,c N ), (5.16) where c t is the message symbol at time t and N is the sequence length, is encoded by a linear code. In general the message symbols c t can be nonbinary but for simplicity we assume that they are independently generated binary symbols and have equal a priori probabilities. The encoding operation is modeled as a discrete time finite-state Markov process. This process can be graphically represented by state and trellis diagrams. In respect to the input c t , the finite-state Markov process generates an output v t and changes its state from S t to S t+1 ,wheret + 1 is the next time instant. The process can be completely specified by the following two relationships v t = f(S t ,c t ,t) S t+1 = g(S t ,c t ,t) (5.17) The functions f(·) and g(·) are generally time varying. Each noise sample is assumed to be independent from each other. The decoder gives an estimate of the input to the discrete finite-state Markov source, by examining the received sequence r t  t . The decoding problem can be alternatively formulated as finding the modulated sequence x t  t or the coded sequence v t  t . As there is one-to-one correspondence between the sequences v t  t and x t  t , if one of them has been estimated, the other can be obtained by simple mapping. The discrete-time finite-state Markov source model is applicable to a number of sys- tems in communications, such a s linear convolutional and block coding, continuous phase modulation and channels with intersymbol interference. The MAP algorithm minimizes the symbol (or bit) error probability. For each transmitted symbol it generates its hard estimate and soft output in the form of the a posteriori probability on the basis of the received sequence r. It computes the log-likelihood ratio (c t ) = log P r {c t = 1 |r} P r {c t = 0 |r} (5.28) Appendix 5.1 MAP Algorithm 177 for 1 ≤ t ≤ τ ,whereτ is the received sequence length, and compares this value to a zero threshold to determine the hard estimate c t as c t =  1if(c t )>0 0otherwise (5.29) The value (c t ) represents the soft information associated with the hard estimate c t .It might be used in a next decoding stage.
