Jack London (1876-1916) Jack London’s life and writing are thought by many to represent the
American love of nature He was born in San Francisco, California, and quit
school at fourteen to become a sailor He travelled a great deal during his
short lifetime in the United States, Europe and the Far East
Jack London took a high place in American literature at the beginning
of the 20th century At that time, the library shelves and bookshops of
America were already full of books by famous writers But Jack London’s
stories were new ones; his heroes were not like the ones in the books of
other writers, and the pictures he painted were not the same as their pictures
The men in Jack London’s books live a difficult life, a life full of
danger In his stories, Jack London shows us that in the terrible world a man
must fall and die in the snow if he makes even the smallest mistake But his
heroes are afraid of nothing, and nothing can stop them People in books by
Jack London never lose hope; they never stop fighting for life even when the
end of life seems very near That is the lesson for people to learn in
everything we want and everything we do; if we do not lose hope, we must
