Nguyễn Đức Hưng** - Marie Curie High School, HP. (: 0912.883.190) Tµi liÖu luyÖn thi §¹i häc M«n TiÕng Anh – Test 6 PASSAGE 1: A child will always tire of a toy when he no longer has any difficulty using it. He is like the boy with a bicycle; as long as he finds it difficult to avoid trees and to turn corners, so long will he spend all his spare time on it. But once he has thoroughly mastered it, he will only use it as a means of getting about, and not for its own sake. It is an unhealthy child who has no creative interest. Keep a child busy and he'll be happy, and conversely, a happy child will always be busy. 1) The writer states that a child’s happiness ____________ A. is linked whether he is occupied or not B. can be increased by giving him more toys C. is directly related to its health D. is dependent on his being made to work hard 2) According to the writer, it is the challenge of using a toy that _____________ A. makes a child tire of it B. causes a child’s unhappiness C. attracts a child to it D. makes it difficult for a child to find the toy interesting 3) The passage tells us that, while a boy is learning how to use a new bicycle ____________ A. he may crash into quite a few trees B. he won’t develop any creative interests C. it will be impossible for him to turn corners D. it will absorb all his available time PASSAGE 2: Tiger usually grow to lengths of more than nine feet and can be bigger than the largest lion. They have great strength. They clutch their prey to them, holding on with their claws, and depend on the crushing bite of their powerful jaws. They swim very well and can often be splashing about in water on very hot days, as they apparently suffer from the heat. When the air is cool, however, they avoid wet or damp vegetation. They can climb, but do not approach the leopard’s ability in this. They can survive in rocky areas but generally prefer to stay on level ground. They are not as well equipped with senses as one might expect. They apparently depend on their hearing while hunting. Their eyesight is not particularly good, and they cannot spot prey until it moves. 4) It clear in the text that tigers _____________ A. are the most talented climbers of all wild animals B. rely heavily on their huge claws to catch their prey C. closely take after lions as regards speed, size and strength D. rely on their eyesight in finding and catching prey 5) As is expressed in the passage, a flat terrain ___________ A. provides camouflage for other wild animals B. rather than rocky cliffs gives tigers better chances to hunt C. usually has varied vegetation which shelters better prey D. is usually chilly, so tigers prefer higher levels 6) From the passage we can infer that, contrary to what is generally thought, ___________ A. climbing is the least developed ability of the tiger B. the tiger’s senses are not well developed C. as soon as a prey starts to move a tiger can rarely catch it D. hilly areas are invariably avoided by all wild animals PASSAGE 3: The unfavourable effects of cigarette smoking on the heart have usually been discussed, but the exact basis for these effects has not been clarified. Some believe nicotine to be the culprit, and there has been some experimental work in animals indicating that large doses of nicotine in conjunction with cholesterol feeding and vitamin D could cause a disease of the arteries resembling that observed in humans. An alternative explanation has been offered by other investigators who have pointed to the possible role of carbon monoxide being inhaled with the cigarette smoke. 7) It is explained in the passage that nicotine ___________ A. hits animals more seriously than humans B. is the only dangerous factor in relation to smoking C. has a negative effect only upon the arteries D. is considered by some investigators as one of the reasons why smoking has an adverse effect on the heart 8) According to the text, studies into the adverse effects of smoking _____________ A. have proved any relationship between smoking and cholesterol levels in humans B. have illustrated that vitamin D reduces nicotine in the body C. have not been able to establish for certain whether or not carbon monoxide could be a main factor D. show that nicotine and carbon monoxide may be only minor factors 9) The main concern of the text is to _______________ A. show that the unfavourable effects of smoking on the heart are still under debate B. emphasise the effects of nicotine and vitamin d on heart disease C. describe some experiments on animals to observe the effects of harmful gases D. exemplify the researches concerning animal disease PASSAGE 4: Many substances, whether man-made or natural, can cause harm to man or the environment. Some of these reach the environment in waste streams; however, emission limits and environmental quality standards can, in some instances, Nguyễn Đức Hưng** - Marie Curie High School, HP. (: 0912.883.190) reduce the amounts released. But some other substances cannot be controlled in this way because they are release, not in industrial waste streams, but through the use of disposal of products which contain them. In many cases these substances pose little or no threat if the product containing them is used and disposed properly. The right way to deal with them is usually through controls over their supply, use and disposal. 10) According to the passage, the threat of certain substances to the environment ____________ A. is far less than that to man B. has been unnecessarily emphasised C. has to date been completely ignored D. can be eliminated by the use of industrial waste streams 11) The author points out that the danger posed to man by many substances ___________ A. is unrelated to environmental pollution B. is even greater than generally admitted C. arises from their misuse and wrong disposal D. continues to grow despite constant control of disposal systems 12) The passage is concerned with the question of _____________ A. why industrial waste streams have caused so much pollution B. whether man-made substances or natural ones cause more pollution C. what measures are to be taken against the supply dangerous substances D. how the harmful effects of certain substances can be brought under control PASSAGE 5: Skin cancer is a condition about which people are becoming increasingly concerned. As yet, there is still a disturbing level of ignorance about the topic and not everyone fully understands the cause of the illness. In simple terms, sunburn and ultraviolet light can damage your skin, and this damage can lead to skin cancer. There are, of course, other determining factors including your heredity and the environment you live in. As such, it's not always a simple matter to clearly define the source of an individual case. However, it's still true to say that total amount of sun received over ten years and over exposure resulting in sunburn can cause skin cancer. 13) According to the passage ____________ A. more people are becoming infected with skin cancer than ever before B. not many people realise at first that they've contracted the illness C. no one has yet found exactly what the reason for the disease is D. interest and anxiety over this type of cancer is rising 14) The passage tells us that skin cancer ____________ A. does not only occur because of exposure to the sun B. is not a very complex disorder C. is totally ignored by the scientific world D. almost always results from sunburn or sunlight 15) One can infer from the passage that ____________ A. sufferers should take the problem more seriously B. there is as yet no cure for skin cancer as it's difficult to pinpoint the cancer C. those in hotter climates are more prone to the condition than others D. a number of causes can lead to skin cancer PASSAGE 6: It is an obvious fact that people of different nations tend to use different languages. Along with physical appearance and cultural characteristics, language differences are part of what distinguishes one nation from another. Of course it is not only across national boundaries that people speak different languages. In Canada, inhabitants of the same cities and rural areas have spoken different languages for centuries. In Quebec province, ethnic French-Canadians maintain a strong allegiance to the French language, while ethnic Anglos maintain a loyalty to English. In India, literally dozens of languages are spoken, some confined to small areas, others spoken regionally or nationally. In some parts of India, two or more languages are spoken by different ethnic groups. 16) We learn from the passage that __________ A. in a country where different races live, it is quite normal for people to speak different languages B. nations can be differentiated from each other only by their physical characteristics C. no matter where you are, you can hear a different language spoken by minorities D. there might be more than two ethnic groups speaking the same tongue 17) From the passage , we can understand that __________ A. no two ethnic groups use the same tongue B. urban and suburban people have been expressing themselves using different languages for hundreds of years C. dozens of languages are spoken by millions of people in Canada D. geographically and phonetically speaking, Canada lies between America and England 18) It is implied in the passage that, one of the functions of a language is to ___________ A. help us decide where our listener comes from C. separate countries from each other B. help us find a suitable friend who may help us when we are abroad D. allow us to make friends wherever we are Nguyễn Đức Hưng** - Marie Curie High School, HP.
