I Read the following text and choose the best answer for the questions below

The moment for Olympic glory and gold occurs once every four years.- a moment whichbecomes the focus for the lives of athletes from al over the world This one event is theirultimate goal, the high point of their ambition, and in order to achieve their dream they areprepared to make any sacrifice

Most athletes consider themselves fortunate to have one chance to shine at an OlympicGames, while others may be fortunate to get two or more chances All are selected by theirnational Olympic Committee to represent their country, and once selected they face twomajor demands The first is the mountain of form-filling, paperwork and administration Thesecond is to finalise their preparation for the Games Most athletes have highly-developed training schedules which enable them to reach the height of their performancefor a particular event However, the Olympics creates its own timetable and pressures. When I was selected to represent the Great Britain, I had approximately a hundred days to

prepare This included finalising training plans, raising nearly $ 16,000 towards the costs,

seeing to travel arrangements and entry forms, and having discussions with my employerabout extra time off work to allow me to prepare fully

Through my sailing career, I had never had the opportunity to become a full time athlete,

so I needed to pursue my business career at the same time as my sporting objectives. However, any top- class athlete in any sport needs a level of business skills whencompeting at Olympic standard They need the ability to plan and arrange for all theexpenses effectively as well as work towards definite aims

Once you arrive, you stay in the Olympic Village , which is really a small town housing“ ”

15,000 people - 10,000 athletes and 5,000 officials - from every imaginable culture andbackground It is fascinating to watch athletes from tiny gymnasts to huge weightlifters andbasketball players, and best of all is the excitement of being part of such a selectgathering There are training facilities, souvenir shops, launderettes, a bank and a postoffice, as well as the Village restaurant which seats over 3.000 people at one time Theoutdoor plazas become a meeting place for athletes from around the world, and fromthere you can see people returning with their medals proudly displayed around their necks

or bravely hiding their tears of defeat or disappointment

So what does it feel like to go to an Olympics? It can be summed up in many ways by theopening ceremony, where thousands of athletes and officials parade wearing their teamkit To most it is an event they will never forget and the honour of just being there is almostmagical And perhaps winning a medal is one of life s major experiences For me it was the

thoughts of family and friends who had all played a part on my road to success, and it feltwonderful

When I saw the notice Women film extras wanted in a local newspaper .I jumped at“ ”

the chance As a child I had dreamt of being a film star (1)

The casting interview, held in a church hall with many budding actors in attendance, wentwell, and two days later I was told that I had been chosen The production in question wasrevealed as Scottish Television s Dr Friday Drama, which is set in the 1950s.

(2) Extras are often left in the dark for some time when it comes to being told whichrole they will play Finally, the nature of my role was revealed I was asked to play a mentalhospital patient

(3) Then, barely a week later, the day of filming dawned All 13 of us extras, mainlyhousewives, were told to change into our costumes in the wardrobe department Then wewere driven to the location, a hospital on the fringes of Glasgow It seems that it iscommon for old hospitals to be used in this way

On arriving, we were given coffee and tea, which looked and tasted like cement Then wewere rushed off to make- up My hair was pinned back and make - up was applied thatgave me a pale appearance Then we were sent to the mini bus for a few hours, as thecamera rolled elsewhere

After the second hour had passed I was becoming bored ( 4) I had expected to be sobusy that I hadn t come prepared for a long wait Many of the others had brought a book or knitting.Three hours had passed (5) A large room in the hospital had been transformed into adayroom for that purpose Although I had expected the room to be warm because of thelighting equipment present, it was quite chilly

When the director came in, we were instructed what to do and where to stand Along with afew others, I was told to sit at a table and weave baskets (6) The cane we had to usewas very long On several occasions my basket fell apart in front of my very eyes Onothers, I only succeeded in hitting the camera - man in the eye

(7) Jean, who was bare foot, had to circle the floor Poor Alice was asked to pretend

to bang her head against the wall Meanwhile., Veronica swept the floor

Thankfully, after just a few attempts, the scenes were done (8) Although I found theexperience very interesting, my first screen role will almost certainly be my last

A This was not an easy task.

B Life for the other extras was far from

E And so my first taste of this “ glamorous”

career was over.
