Level: Pre-intermediate. 3. Time: 45m (2 nd period: from 8h10 to 8h55) 4. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to: • Ask for and give some information about the Asian Games. • Talk about results and achievements of Vietnamese athletes at 14 th Asian Games • Express their own ideas about sport results and about their favorite games and athletes 5. Teaching aids: text book, handouts 6. Anticipated problems: games can make the class become noisy and out of Teacher’s control. 7. PROCEDURE Time Stages & Content T’s activities Ss’ activities 5 mins (8h10 => 8h15) I. WARM-UP: Games: Stop the bus Group A Group B Country in Asia……………… ………………. Sports ……………… - Put Ss in teams - Draw two lines on the board and label them with two categories. - Give Ss a letter from the alphabet, for example letter M. - play the game in groups 1 ………………. - For example: Country Malaysia Sport Mountain climbing - Check Ss’ understanding of the instruction. Suggested ideas: - T, P, V- ; B, C, M- - T: Thailand – Table tennis – Tennis - P: Philippines/Pakistan – Ping pong - V: Vietnam Volleyball - B: Brunei – Basketball / boxing / body building / billiards - C: Cambodia – chess - M: Malaysia / As quickly as possible, they should think of a word connected with each category beginning with letter M and write them down. - The first team to write down one word for each category should shout: “Stop the bus.” If the word is correct, give the team one point the choose another letter. - Declare the winning group. 2 Myanmar – mountain biking / climbing S: Singapore – Snookers / Squash 10 mins (8h15 => 8h25) II. PRE-SPEAKING: What Asian countries have taken part in the Asian Games? What sports have been introduced in the Asian Games? Asian countries - Sports - Useful language: - Use Simple past tense to talk about the events in the past. - Passive voice can be used to talk about the year the Asian Games took place. E.g.: The first Asian Games was held in 1951 in New Delhi, India. - Ask Ss to open their books and look at the information about the Asian Games in the table to check which countries have been the host countries in the Asian games until now. - Ask Ss to look at the dialogue on page 139 and repeat the conservation. - Elicit the language for Ss - Ask Ss to repeat the conversation. - Call some Ss to read the dialogue aloud. - Correct their pronunciation. - Open their books and look at the information about the Asian Games in the table to check which countries have been the host countries in the Asian games until now. - Repeat the conversation. - Some Ss read aloud the dialogue. - 10 mins III. WHILE_SPEAKING: Activity 1: Repetition and substitution - Prepare 2 sets of cards A and B - Put Ss in pairs and give 1 - Take turn to ask and answer about the Asian Games to make 3 (8h25 => 9h35) 10 mins (9h35 => 9h45) Activity 2: reporting student card A, 1 student card B and ask them to take turn to ask and answer about the Asian Game. - Move around to give help. - Ask some pairs to come to the front of the class and act out their conversation. Ask Ss to work in group of 3-4 to play the role of a group of reporters preparing their report about Vietnamese’s performance and achievements at the 14 th Asian Games, using the information from the table on page 140 – task 2. - Move around to give help. At the 14 th Asian Games held in Busan, Korea, in bodybuilding, the Vietnamese athletes won one medal and one bronze medal. In dialogues by themselves basing on the information from the cards - - Some pairs come to the front of the class and act out the conversation. - - Work in groups of 3-4 to prepare a report about Vietnamese’s performance and achievements at the 14 th Asian Games, using the information from the table on page 140 – task 2. 4 billiards, they won one gold medal and one silver medal. - Call some representatives come to the board to do the report. - Give feedback - Some representatives come to the board to do the report 10 mins (8h45 => 8h55) IV. POST-SPEAKING: Role play - ask students to work in groups of 4 to talk about the 14 th Asian Games using the suggestions in the handouts - work in groups of 4 to talk about the 14 th Asian Games using the suggestion given.
