Lesson plan UNIT 12: MUSIC Period 72: A: Reading Class : 10A2 Student : Bui Thi Thu Huyen Teacher guide : Mrs Nguyen Van Anh I. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Ss are able to: + use the vocabulary items related to music. + guess the meaning of words based on contexts. + scan for specific information about music. II. Teaching aids: - Textbook, chalk, board, pictures. III. Anticipated problems: - Ss may not know many vocabulary items related to music, so T should be ready to introduce some. IV. Proceduces: Teacher's activities Students' activities A.Warm up:(3minutes) - T devices class into 2 groups : A & B.T guide Ss to play game lucky color. “ each group will choose 1 color, each color has some information or pictures which related with 1 kind of music. Ss guest this is what kind of music. Do you understand?” - Introduce the new lesson: we have just talked about some kinds of music. Today we will learn more about them in unit 12 - music. T writes on board Unit 12 : music Part A : reading I. Before you read - Ss join in the groups and give the answers. + red color : T shows picture about “ quan ho Bac Ninh” folk music. Maybe T asks this Ss translate into Vietnamese + green . in Vietnam, Buc Tuong band is famous about this kind of music. Rock’n’roll + blue T shows pictures about My Tam and Dan Truong. Pop music. Or T asks Ss “ What kind of music is Britney Spears famous? + violet T shows picture about symphony orchestra. Classical music. + yellow T shows picture about Big Toe crew. Hip – hop. + orange luckycolor. T and Ss check and congratulation group winner. B. New lesson:(41minutes) I. Before you read (3minutes) Read the types of music aloud. -Ask Ss to read aloud the types of music in column A to make sure that they pronounce them correctly. - “ We have a game which relates with kinds of music, we will do this part in pairs to find the most exactly for each kind of music. Are you ready, we have 1 minute” - give SS some new words in this part : serious :(adj) trang trong combination:(n) su ket hop - T asks some Ss to give the answers. (1minute) and comment -Give Vietnamese names. -Work in pairs. - Some give the answers Suggested answers: 1. b 2.e 3.d 4. a 5. c - Listen and correct. II.While you read:(32minutes) T says “You are going to read a passage about music. While you are reading,find some new words.” (3minutes) + convey(v): biÓu lé, thÓ hiÖn + funeral(n): ®¸m ma ( T shows picture) + solemn(a): trang träng, trang nghiªm( suggest in Vietnames) + sense(n): gi¸c quan (we have six - Read the passage quickly and write the words on their books. senses, they are smell, taste, touch, what does sense mean?) + integral part(n): phÇn thiÕt yÕu = importance + lull(v) :ru ngñ( T shows a picture) + set the tone: t¹o kh«ng khÝ - Help Ss read the new words fluently. check Ss’s new words: pronunciation and meaning. - check some new words : T says in Vietnamese : giac quan, phan thiet yeu. T shows 2 pictures: lull, funeral. Ss say in English - now we will practise with these new words in task 1. T writes on board 1. Task 1: Task 1: Gap filing based on word meaning guessing(12 minutes) T says:Fill each blank with one of the words in the box. All of the words appear in the reading passage - Ask Ss to work individually to do the task.(3 minutes) - Go round to help if necessary. - Ask Ss to exchange their work with a partner.(1minute) - Ask Ss for their answers and tell them to explain their choices(4 minutes) - Ss repeat in chorus and individually (2 Ss) - Ss repeat new words - Work individually. - Compare the work with a partner. - T shows secondary board and open one by one answer. - today we have more information about music, we have just finished taks 1. And then, we move to taks 2 Task 2: Answering questions: T says :You are to read the passage again and answer the questions in the secondary board.(9 minutes) - Ask Ss to work in pairs.(4minutes) - Call on some Ss to answer and ask them to explain their choice, the others comment. (3minutes) Suggested answers: 1. communicate 2. lull 3. delights 4. integral part 5. solemn 6. emotion 7. mournful - Listen to teacher. - Work in pairs secondary board : 1. what are the two things that make humans different from other animals : language and music. 2. music is powerful means of communication because (c) a) music can express ideas, thoughts and feelings b) music can express one’s anger, love, hate or friendship c) a&b 3. how can music set the tone for • further exercise T asks Ss to answer 2 questions - how many roles of music are mentioned in the tect?what are they?(communication and entertain) - does music make you happy and excited? events and special occasions? (music adds joyfullness to the atmosphere of a festival and makes a funeral more solemn and mournful) 4. how can music entertain? (music makes people happy and excited and delights the sense) 5. why has music always been a big business?(because it is a billion – dollar industry) - Observe and check up III. After you read (6minutes) T says :You are required to work in groups to discuss the questions in the textbook. - Ask Ss to work in groups of three or four to discuss the two questions in the secondary board + in your opinion, which of the roles of - Listen to the teacher. - Work in groups of three or four. music is the most important + how will your life be if without music? - Go round to help when necessary - Call on some groups to report their ideas to the class.(3minutes) - Give feedback - Listen to get the other's ideas. - Listen to the teacher. C. HOMEWORK:(1minute) - Summarize the main points. - Ask Ss to learn all the new words by heart. - Ask them to do all the tasks again. - Listen and take notes .
