Unit 13: hobbies Listening I. Aims: 1. Knowledge: By the end of the lesson ss will be able to talk about the advantages and the over- reading. 2. Skills: Listen a monologue for gist and specific information. II. Preparation: - Teaching aids: Textbook, board, chalk, pointer, pictures, cassette player, etc - Reading the textbook and reference books and prepare teaching plans. Time T’s activities Ss’ activities I. Warm – up: _ Give 5 words with their definition or explanation and ask ss to find out these words. 1._ _ _ _ _ (Stamp) What do you have to stick on the envelope before sending a letter? 2. _ _ _ _ (Music) What is MTV channel famous for? 3. _ _ _ _ _ ( Swimming) What is Michael Fell is famous for? (This one related to aquatic sports.) _ Guess the words. II. Before you listen: _ Let ss work in pairs to discuss and then write down three benefits of reading. _ Call on some ss to share their ideas with the class. Expec ted answers: - Get information, facts - Learn about many things - Relax. _ Ask ss listen and repeat all the given words in the book (on page 150) Magazines Continually Otherwise Profitably Available Bygone Gigantic ignorantly _ Explain new words.  Gigantic (adj): very big.  Profitably (adv):  Bygone (adj): past  Continually (adv): happen all the time/ again and again, without stopping.  Ignorantly (adv): lack knowledge of something. _ _ Work in pairs to discuss and write down 3 benefits of reading. _ Share ideas with friends. _ Listen and repeat. _ Take notes new words. III. While you listen: 1. Task 1: Decide the statements are T or F _ Let ss read through all given information in task. _ Ask ss whether there are any new words _ Explain new words. - Fairy tale: untrue story about magic for children. - …. _ Ask ss guess the answers. _ Play the tape twice. _ Ask ss how many answers they can get. _ Ask ss to exchange their answers. _ Call on 1 volunteer to write the answer on the board. _ Check the answers. _ Play the tape one more time to check if necessary. Keys: 1. T 2. F 3. F 4. T 5. F 6. T 7. T 8. T 2. Task 2: Fill in the blank: _ Let ss read through the passage and guess the answers (guess the part of speech of the missing words). _ Play the tape once. _ Let ss exchange their answers. _ Call on some ss to read their answers. _ Call on 1 volunteer to go to the board and write down the answers. _ Check the answers. Keys: 1. Wonderful 2. Disease 3. Jungle 4. Certainly 5. Ignorantly _ Read through all given information in task. _ Find out new words. _ Guess the answers with friends. _ Listen to the record. _ Do the task. _ Exchange the answers. _ 1s write down answer on the board. _ Take notes on the notebook. _ Read through the passage and guess the part of speech of the missing words. _ Listen to the record again. _ Do the task. _ Exchange the answers _ Read answers. IV: After you listen: Talk about the disadvantages of over – reading. _ Let ss work in pairs of 4. _ Ask 2 leader of 2 group to present their ideas. Expected answers:  Be tired  Be harmful for eyes (easy to be short-sighted)  Neglect studying (have no time for study/social activities)  Get confused  Spend a lot of money _ Work in pairs to discuss.
