people will not

The paradigm of english conjunctions

English conjunctions are freguently used

by all people both

in oral and written form They serve for better

expressing thoughts, feelings

Trang 4

1 Aims of the study and The paradigm of english

For example, having analysed the novels of English

liturature we got the following results, which are

shown in the diagrams:

1 “Persuasion” by Jane Austen

2 “Far from the madding crowd” by Thomas Hardy

3 “An Outcast of the Islands”

by Joseph Conrad

4 “The Haunted Hotel” by Wilkie Collins

5 “Soul of a Bishop” by H G. Wells

ENUNERATIVE

First, secondthird…,first(ly),secondly, thirdly,…,one, two, three,(especially in learned and technical use),a,b,c(especially) in learned and technical use,for one thing… (and) for another(thing),for a star(informal) to begin with, to star with,in the first place,in the second place, next then, finally, last, lastly,to condude(fermal)

REINFORCING Also, furthermore, moreover, then(informal, espencially spoken),in addition above all , what is more

EQUATIVE

Equally,likewise,similarly,in the some way

TRANSITIONAL

By the way,incidertally

SUMMATIVE

Then, (all), in all, in conclusion,…

APPOSITION Namely( often abbreviated to viz in formal written English) , in other words , for example ( often abbreviated to eg or

- In the mine time , the shares will continue to trade on the open market

- The first one Trump has shared on X since January 8,2021, featured the historic mugshot he had taken

REF0RNULATOR

Y Better,rather,in other words

2 Conjuncts as and Conjunctions for clauses with

conjunctscorrelatives 2.1 Conjuncts as correlatives

The sentences with the subordinator alone and the conjunct yet alone

are similar in meaning

Ex : though he is poor , he is satisfied with his situation

He is poor , yet he is satisfied with his situation

2.2 Conjunctions for clauses with conjuncts

A clause containing a conjuct may be linked to a preceding clause by one of the coordinators (and, or, but) the following conjuncts seen to be limited to the specified coordinators

And so or + else/again (replacive)

But + however/ then( anti thetic) / though

Trang 8

2 Conjuncts as and Conjunctions for clauses with

conjunctscorrelatives 2.2 Conjunctions for clauses with conjuncts

And/but + besides / still / get /

neuertheless

Two of these conjuncts – however and

though – cannot follow the can – junction

immediately That is to ray , If but is the

coordinator , hawever and though cannot

he initial although either can be if there is

no preceding conjunction We can there

jore have

Eg :

- You have phone the doctor if you like ,

but I very much doubt , however , whether

he will come out on a Saturday night

- You can phone the doctor if you like

however , I very much doubt whether he

will come out on a Saturday night
