Trang 9Writing is divided into two categories in IELTS, Academic and General
Training
In this book, the academic format is discussed, which is often, but not always, criteria for applying to tertiary education programmes in English-speakingcountries
A person's writing ability is evaluated in the writing section, as well as theirability to understand and respond to different tasks with an adequate level ofaccuracy
Trang 11The second task is the essay task which carries almost double marks if it goesright and hence requires more attention as it has more complexity than the
previous task
Trang 12What Is Task 1?
In this task, candidates are tested on their ability to understand data presentedvisually The candidates are required to write a report describing the given dataonce they have analyzed it and understood it
Trang 13There may be a difference in the structure of the report depending on theillustration provided The report typically consists of four paragraphs.
Trang 15The assessment for Task 1 is based on four categories that determine the finalscore from 1 to 9 Below is a description of each criterion:
Trang 17The writing section of the test may include a variety of charts, however, only onechart per test is permitted Although graphs still dominate the scene, maps haverecently gained in popularity as well
Graphs, Charts & Tables
An array of numerical features appears in this type Identifying such trends aswell as comparing them when necessary (the highest, lowest, etc.) is the maingoal
Processes
This type depicts a sequence of stages or shows how something works through adiagram It is about identifying the steps and functionality in the diagram
Maps
Here you will see two maps of the same place, but with several changes There isalso the option to receive one map containing two different locations that will becompared
Trang 18It is due to the lack of planning that people are unable to achieve a high score ontask 1 In other words, most people study the image quickly then write the reportimmediately, resulting in errors, such as missing or not providing all the
comparing similarities and differences
Step 2 - Create a feature list
List the aspects that will appear in the description on the page where the
illustration appears By doing so, you won't leave out any pertinent informationand your analysis will be more comprehensive
Trang 19In contrast, people normally make this mistake when doing this task Theyassume the reader will be looking at the image as well as the report at the sametime The purpose of the report is to reveal rather than describe, so the readerwill not feel the need to view the image This is an oversight since everything issufficiently described for the reader to avoid doing so
Step 4 - Review and edit your report
After completing your report, spend a few minutes reading it and making anynecessary changes This is an important step, but most people never get thechance to do it because of time constraints You should always have some sparetime In that case, you need to practice more
Trang 201) Organize your time and manage it wisely.
People are not generally organized when it comes to any of their writing tasks, asmentioned above People consider planning to be a waste of time because theyaren't used to it
Getting good results requires planning Taking the suggestions above as a
starting point will be a good place to start
Having twenty minutes to plan, write, and check seems inadequate Yet, if you'resystematic, you'll get there Count the time it takes to analyse a graph, take notes, and then write it
Build your system from that and then keep a record of each step you take tocreate your system You will be amazed at the results after a few trials
2) Understand the scoring criteria
An understanding of what examiners are looking for in your report is critical. The IELTS official website provides band descriptors, but few people attempt tounderstand what they are and how examiners use them
Trang 21There is no rocket science involved here It's not difficult to follow the
descriptors and though they might sound rather technical at times, even knowingwhat each criterion is meant to do will help you realize what examiners arelooking for to score you well
You must, for instance, achieve the following to earn 7 points:
Task Achievement
- Write and submit a 150 words completed report
- Include an overview with a clear description of the main trends/stages/changes represented in the graphic
- Describe all features is needed
Cohesion and Coherence
- It is important to present information logically so ideas can progress naturally.
Trang 22- Using a range of cohesion devices (linking words, pronoun references, etc.) with some flexibility, but don't overuse or underuse.
Accuracy and lexical range
- Ensure that the expressions you use have some level of sophistication (uncommon words) and are aware of the link between the words (such as combining words like "do business").
- Make a few errors in spelling, word choice, and form (most sentences are error-free).
Grammatical range and accuracy
- Make sure you use a variety of types of structures with high levels of accuracy (the majority of your sentences are complete and error-free) and good punctuation.
A report that earns a 7 will not be perfect, but it should demonstrate a high level
of accuracy for all four criteria
There is less room for error and higher expectations when it comes to vocabularyand grammar skills, which will help you get an 8; however, the requirementsstay the same
Paraphrasing is key
Trang 23allows you to explain your understanding of the illustration without repeating theterms used in the question
Although some words cannot be changed, most should be consolidated or
replaced with synonyms or a different expression
Trang 24Summarize and identify the leading features, and where applicable, make comparisons between the different variables.
Write at least 150 words
Trang 26Look at the graph and note the key trends and differences, and then decide what information to include in each paragraph (See example below)
Trang 27It is estimated that in 1980, people aged 18-25 contributed 20% of their money, while those aged 26-35 contributed 35% There were three age groups in 2015where donations were much lower, with less than five per cent from 18 to 25-year-olds, followed by 20 per cent from 26 to 35-year-olds and 40 per cent from
60-year-old population and from the 60-plus group, where there was an increase
36 to 45-year-olds Both years, the highest share of donations came from the 46-of about 5% in 2015 in comparison to the 50% and 55% observed in 1980
According to the study, people have donated less to charities in the recent past, but they have been giving more as they age

Trang 37- Filtering is the last step before packaging and distributing the beer
Sample Answer 1:
An illustration of the process of a brewery is shown in the diagram A detaileddescription of the process is included from initial milling through distributionand packaging
There are no optional steps or variations in the process It is divided into severallinear steps
A primary step in the brewing process is the introduction of malted barley to themilling step and then the mashing of the barley It is at this point that water isadded to start the lautering process After boiling, sugar is added to the mixture. After this step, it is passed through a whirlpool and cooled afterwards
Fermenting and maturing are the next steps in the process Having passed
through these steps, the mixture is then filtered for packaging Different types ofcontainers are used to package the beer for distribution by larger trucks
The brewery process involves several steps that are all clearly outlined, so theprocess is fairly straightforward The process cannot go in two different
directions at any time during the brewing process, so the beers are always thesame when the brewing process is complete

Trang 47- Everything remained the same, from the hospital to the railway station to the river
Trang 48Both maps depict the same area, however, one is dated 1995 and the other is2015
While many changes have taken place in the area, some structures have
remained from 1995 to 2015
Taking a look at both maps, it is apparent that the woodland area has now beentransformed into an Adventure Park Additionally, the housed area has expandedwhile the park has decreased in size over time Above the river, a new school hasalso been built above a large house converted into a hotel and a golf course. There is also now a shopping complex on the site of the school, and the publicgarden has been converted to factories and warehouses In addition, the old
houses have been replaced with apartment blocks Between 1995 and 2015, therehave been no major changes to the hospital, the railway station, or the river
Throughout the map area, it is evident that further development has occurredthroughout the past 20 years

Trang 54What Is Task 2?
This task consists of an essay that must be submitted in response to a questionregarding general knowledge General Training and Academic formats for Task
2 are similar; however, themes such as "Education" and "Environmental Issues"are more likely to appear in the Academic format, rather than "TV" and
Trang 55structure may vary based on the type of question provided.
Trang 60Assessments for Task 2 are based on four areas, each of which determines thefinal score Bands are numbered 1 to 9 Below are brief descriptions of eachcriterion:
Trang 62In the example above, you can see that there is no major difference in the scoringcriteria between task 1 and task 2 In Task 2 there were significant discrepanciesbetween the answers to the first and second criteria, with emphasis on the
content and structure of the response
Trang 63In many aspects of our lives, including education, modern technology is being used more and more Is technology a more effective educational tool than its disadvantages?
Trang 64There will be two viewpoints or perspectives presented in this case, which can
be confusing People tend to think they are required to pick a side and state onlythat side in their response, but contrary to that belief, candidates are expected toprovide both views (objectively) and then state their personal position
Example:
While some people consider exams to be essential for measuring students' learning outcomes, others believe they are unnecessary and unfair What do you think?
Opinion-Based Question
In response to this question type, candidates are asked to express their opinionsregarding the statement presented in the question The main difference between
it and the last type is that candidates can decide which side they want to support, whereas opposite-view questions require that both sides be evaluated before anopinion can be presented
This question type consists of three cases:
Case 1) What is your opinion?
