The following exercises will help you identify chart data faster Obviously,there's little time for working out in a real test, but with practice, you will start toprocess these steps more quickly

1.1 STEP 1 Understanding the Question and Brainstorming DifferentVocabulary.

To analyse the chart, you should read the instructions twice, study the chart datacarefully and write down any new vocabulary words and phrases you can thinkof Compare your ideas to the teacher’s in the video

1.2 STEP 2 Planning & Writing the Introduction & the OverviewParagraphs.

- what type of chart is it? (bar chart, line graph, pie chart, table etc) - what does it show and compare (generally)? (what is the data actually about?)

- where is it about? (the place the question refers to)

- when is the time period? (from when to when?)

- what is the unit of measurement? (miles? grammes? number of people? cost?

etc) Again, compare your ideas with the teacher’s ideas from the free video on the

website

To identify the general trend (for the overview - paragraph 2), you need toidentify what happened GENERALLY or OVERALL from the beginning ofthe time period to the end of the period I show you how to do this in thefree video on the website.

Write a very short summary of what you can see happened generally or overallin the chart

Now check your answers with the teacher’s model on the website It is agood idea to copy the teacher’s answer as well (by writing it out below)because as you write, you will notice words and structures that are differentfrom how you write This will help you identify better techniques that youare not currently using.

1.3 STEP 3 Identifying Key Features for the Body Paragraphs.Write down 4-6 key features from the chart data to compare in the bodyparagraphs.

You may find 2 key features is enough for each body paragraph but write afew extra if you find it easy to identify them.

1.4 STEP 4 Writing the 2 Short Body Paragraphs.

Now write a detailed first body paragraph about the first 2 or 3 key features youidentified as main features in step 3 You might only need to use 2 of these toachieve a good word count, so do not worry about including everything. Now compare your first paragraph to the answer written by the teacher in the

video (step 4) Can you see any similarities or differences? You should try toremember 2 or 3 new ideas to improve your task 1 writing technique
