subject line: Welcome to the boredom killing business

Despite his bat shyt political rants, one of my favorite comicbook writers isPeter David

He’s been writing comics for some 30+ years, and probably his main claim tofame is his 12-year run on the Incredible Hulk in the 80’s and 90’s — wherehe went deep into how the Hulk is essentially a guy with multiple

personalities, writing several wildly popular takes on the character (from thebrilliant “Joe Fixit” grey version of the hulk… to the merged hulk who was acombination of the Banner, the savage green hulk, and the crafty gray hulk…to the plot twist version of the hulk who would turn back into banner if he gottoo mad…) whose ideas have been heavily used in the recent Marvel movies. And when I decided to convert my “Enoch Wars” novels into comicbookscripts, one of the first books I bought on the subject was Peter David’sexcellent book:

“Writing Comics & Graphic Novels”I found this book extremely fascinating and helpful. But, not just for comicbook writing, but copywriting, too.Take, for example, this snippet:

===“There is no one way to tell a story well There is, however, only one way totell a story badly: bore the reader…to quote Howard Beale in Paddy

Chayefsky’s Network, “We’re in the boredom-killing business.”===

“Boredom-killing business.”A very good way of thinking about copywriting. And over the years, I have noticed one underknown copywriter who — fromthe purely mechanical writing side of copywriting — is still to this day

Trang 5

especially good at making the what would otherwise be mundane and boring, inherently interesting when writing everything from bullets and headlines, tothe body copy, and all other parts of an ad or email.

Who is this copywriter I speak of?And how does he put boredom on its knees and shoot it in the headexecution-style?

That, my eager sidekick, is found on page 12 in the June 2020 “EmailPlayers” issue bundled inside my new Copy Sililoquies: Vol 1 manual I notonly tell you about this guy, but break down some simple ways he does it inhis sales copy in a way the human brain LIKES to be sold by It’s definitely nocoincidence this copywriter’s first business many years ago was all aboutshowing people how to learn new ideas more efficiently

More on Copy Salesliloquies: Vol 1:It includes the June 2020, February 2021, June 2021, & May 2022 EmailPlayers issues Plus, it also includes the transcripts of a couple intenseline-by-line sales letter analyses (for my Subscription Biz & Social Lair bookoffers) I did for our $499/month Profit Pirates coaching clients

Lots of stuff I either couldn’t fit into my Copy Slacker book (already 800+pages)

Or stuff I learned since writing Copy Slacker. And before you even ask:

No, you do NOT need Copy Slacker to learn from the info in this manual Ifanything, it serves as a nifty “prequel” (or sequel if you already possess it) tomy Copy Slacker book you can learn from regardless of your experience, knowledge, or skill level now

subject line: The writing trick Jack London, Hunter S, Thompson, andBenjamin Franklin used to excel at their craft.

True story:Once upon a time a copywriter I know went around bragging about neverhaving written out a Gary Halbert ad by hand This person said it to implythey had so much natural talent at writing copy they didn’t need to

Let’s just say it was obvious this person had never done so, too. And, in my scraggly opinion, it was also obvious this person would have beenbetter served if they had done it

Here’s the point:While you certainly don't have to do it, I can tell you from hours and hours ofmindlessly copying out the sales letters of truly great copywriters, there arefew ways I know of that can help one get good at writing copy like doing thisexercise over a long period of time The late, great Gary Halbert described thephenomenon of copying out the writing of great copywriters as “neurologicalimprinting”, since it gives your brain the experience of doing great writing. You also imbibe the flow, rhythm, and structure of great persuasive ads, too.And lest you are rolling your eyes thinking this is just some copywritingmyth:

I have since discovered this way of learning writing was how some schoolsback in the 18th and 19th centuries in America taught kids how to write.Incidentally, I once saw a test for 8th graders from the 1800’s And I doubt 1

Trang 7

out of 1000 (no exaggeration) adults today would pass that test People weresimply better educated and higher level thinkers back then I have also heardtell that copying out great writing by hand was one way writers like JackLondon, Hunter S Thompson, and even Benjamin Franklin used to help excelat their craft.

As far as whose writing to copy out by hand? There are lots to choose from

I talk about the copywriters I did this with in my new manual:“Copy Salesliloquies: Vol 1”

It includes the June 2020, February 2021, June 2021, & May 2022 EmailPlayers issues Plus, it also includes the transcripts of a couple intenseline-by-line sales letter analyses (for my Subscription Biz & Social Lair bookoffers) I did for our $499/month Profit Pirates coaching clients

1 Micro speed, macro patience2 Play the long-term, no fast cash blitz3 Work extremely hard on only one thing4 Don't keep your head on the goal but on the process Don't mind what

they say.5 Work work work No daydreams, no Instagram, no bullshit I spend more

time playing on a weekend than Gary V spent his entire 20s having fun.6 Compare yourself only to yourself Don't care about other people's early

successes They have the rich parents DLC, chase the fast cash - totallyirrelevant to you Everyone else is irrelevant

7 Do not flex You can't trick, or bullshit the winners You can only trick thelosers No winner thinks you're winning The winners will smoke you outof your bullshit

8 When you stop learning, you get left behind Never stop educatingyourself

9 This video made me understand that we have to do our own process inour own timeline and shouldn't use the comparing paradigm

10.And whatever age you’re at, if you’re above the dirt, there is still plentyof life to be enjoyed
