These days, most people are aware of the environmental impact of motor vehicles, and they realise that cars are responsible for many of the problems facing their cities Not many people, however, ever stop to think about how much money they would save by switching from driving to cycling
Cars cost a lot to buy, and unlike other major investments such as houses, they quickly lose their value
On top of that, there are running costs such as repair bills, tax and insurance, all of which seem to go up every year
Bicycles, by contrast, are far less expensive to purchase and maintain, do not require petrol and are easy to park And if a lot more people took up cycling, the government could spend less of the nation's resources on roads, which at present their taxes help pay for whether they drive on them or not

The old adage ‘practice makes perfect’ has taken on special significance in recent times Its message
is simple: if you do something over and over again, then your performance will improve Although often applied to music and sports - both of which are areas in which the necessity to practise is self-evident - the value of practice in other areas of life should not be underestimated In fact, studies seem to indicate that practice (or experience) plays a greater role in success than natural talent, if such a thing exists

Studies have demonstrated that high achievers are in fact no more gifted or intelligent than their contemporaries; rather, the difference lies in the amount of practice they put in In the 1980s, Benjamin Bloom, a professor of education at the University of Chicago, conducted an investigation into the factors that had led to people excelling in different fields He concluded that there was nothing in the early childhoods of these high achievers that could have predicted their later success The subjects of his
research did, however, have certain features in common, namely, that they all had dedicated teachers and
supportive families, and they had all put in intensive practice
K Anders Ericsson, a professor of Psychology at Florida State University, who has carried out research spanning more than two decades into giftedness, expertise, and the benefits of practice, concludes that experts are invariably made, and not born However, Ericsson’s research has also indicated that what counts is not just the amount of practice a person puts in, but rather, the way in which they practise If a person believes that it takes real talent to excel in a certain area, then they are likely to doubt their own ability to improve sufficiently to compete with others, and as a result may give up trying Conversely, the person who can learn from their mistakes, and believes that they have the capacity to improve, is more likely to succeed
In other words, experience really does count Or as another old adage puts it, ‘nothing succeeds like success’ The key to success is motivation and an understanding that practice really does make perfect
(Adapted from Global) Question 6 Which best serves as the title for the passage?

A high achievers B features C subjects D contemporaries
Question 10 The word invariably in paragraph 3 mostly means

Question 11 Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?
A Bloom’s research wanted to get an insight into why people excelled at different fields
B Those who learn from their mistakes and believe in their ability are more likely to succeed
C The subjects in Bloom’s research were all born in rich families and taught by good teachers
D The way in which a person practices also plays an important role in their future success
Question 12 Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A person’s desire to succeed depends on so many factors He or she may have goals, but without the ambition to get started, they never take the first steps to achieve them Similarly, those with an ambition but no clear goals tend to begin many projects, but do not ever follow them till the end
Although there are not any strict rules about how to ‘teach’ ambition or what decides it, many successful people do share something Most scientists agree that it helps to have parents who encourage their children to try new experiences, praise their successes, and accept their failures In those families, kids often have much higher confidence levels They know how to set goals and keep trying until they achieve them Money also plays an important role Those who are not very rich often want to earn money
It forces them to work hard all the time to improve their life
However, the desire for success can create its own stress Working too hard to achieve success can lead to illnesses These days, even teens and young adults are feeling the stress Trying to get into good colleges and find good jobs has forced high school students to study harder than ever For many, it is difficult to find the balance One solution may be to get together with family and friends, and do the things
we enjoy Most would agree that those values are far more important than any wealth or success

in the last three What might account for this?
Swedish-born Anders Ericsson, a psychology professor at Florida State University, is leader of a group
of scholars trying to answer an important question: when someone is very good at something, what actually makes them good? Early experiments by Ericsson suggested that the best way to learn was a process known as ‘deliberate practice’! This is more than simply repeating a task Rather, it involves setting specific goals, getting immediate feedback and concentrating equally on technique and results Ericsson and his colleagues therefore began studying expert performers in a wide range of pursuits, from soccer and surgery to piano playing and software design They've come to a rather startling conclusion: practice really does make perfect What we call ‘talent’ is highly overrated, as expert performers are nearly always made, not born The research also suggests that when it comes to choosing
a life path, you should do what you love People often give up trying to do things they don't like, telling themselves they simply don't possess the talent But what they really lack is the will to succeed and to put
in the deliberate practice that would make them better Ericsson's conclusions, if accurate, suggest that students should follow their interests earlier in their schooling to build up experience and receive meaningful feedback
The insights of the researchers can explain the riddle“of/ why so many elite soccer players are born early in the year Since youth sports are organised by age group, teams have a cut-off birth date In the European youth soccer leagues, the cut-offdate is December 31 So when a coach is assessing two players
in the same age group, one born in January and the other in December, the player born in January is likely
to be bigger, stronger, more mature Guess who the coach will pick He may be mistaking maturity for ability but once chosen, those January-born players are the ones who, year after year, receive the training, the deliberate practice, the feedback - and have the accompanying self-esteem - that will turn them into elite players
(Adapted from English Unlimited) Question 6 Which best serves as the title for the passage?
A Work Hard, Play Hard B A Star is Made

A They have to provide their birth certificates before being admitted to a club
B They often undergo rigorous training during winter months
C Four players born in the second half of the year are likely to excel themselves

Plastic makes our life easier, but its production and use are completely out of control Because plastic rubbish in the oceans looks like food, it is being eaten by small fish, which in turn is eaten by large fish, which in turn is eaten by us Plastic is damaging our beaches, polluting the oceans, and poisoning our food chain The consequences are still not fully understood, but they are likely to be terrible

Being stuck in traffic jams could become a thing of the past, as driverless cars will be able to drive at speed much closer to each other More than fifty million people die or are injured in road accidents every year, and 90% of these accidents are caused by human error Google's driverless car sticks to the speed limit and doesn't get tired So wouldn't it be much safer if all cars were driverless?
