Many structural health monitoring techniques mainly used dynamic and static parameters as input data were studied and developed A crack detection approach for reinforced concrete (RC) beams using the nodal displacement is proposed in this study Firstly, a destructive bending test of an RC beam was reproduced by ANSYS APDL software Displacement data were calculated from the finite element model of the RC beam corresponding to different cracking levels of the beam Damage evaluation indexes based on displacement data were proposed and analyzed to diagnose the appearance and location of cracks due to loading In addition, an artificial neural network was also developed based on the displacement curve at each loading level to diagnose the maximum crack height on the beam caused by the applied load Finally, the effectiveness of the diagnostic method using a combination of nodal displacement and artificial neural networks in structural damage detection was analyzed and discussed
