The graph below shows the differences in wheat exports over three different areas.

Trang 26

24 IELTS WRITING BOOK ONE – VISUALS by LienTran, PhD | iShare English Center

The line graph compares wheat exports from Australia, Canada and European Community from 1985 to

1990 (1) , it can be seen that the export volume in Australia decreased while the amount in European countries increased steadily over time Despite wild fluctuations, Canada was the biggest wheat export country

Initially in 1985 nearly (1) _ was sold abroad from Canada, which was a bit higher than the figures of Australia and European Community, at about 17 and 15 million tons respectively After one year, while the wheat export from Canada (2) _ down to _ and EC to (3) , that of Australia soared minimally to about 15.5 million tons Then, there was not a significant (4) _ in export volumes of these three areas

From that point on to 1988, the quantity of wheat exported from Canada witnessed the (5) _ and peaked at 25 million tons, leaving the other two regions far behind with a (6) of more than 10 million tons What stands out is that just one year after, Canada’s rice export (7) suddenly to well under 15 million tons, nearly equaling that of Australia Meanwhile, the export of EC had increased substantially since then

to reach the (8) _ quantity at about 21 million tons in 1990 Though recovering in 1990, the export

volume of Canada was still (9) than that of EC but it is Australia that was the least rice export country by then

MODULE 2: BAR CHART

A Understanding the rubric

A.1 Diachronic graphs

In a diachronic graph, it is important that the writer identify changes in figures For example when you examine the bar chart below, you can realize that:

Birth rates increased substantially over the surveyed period

There was a considerable increase in the death rates between 1970 and 1990; however, from

1990 to the end of the surveyed period, the rates declined sharply

Writing Task 1

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task

The chart below gives information about birth and death rates in Switzerland from 1970 to 2020 according to United Nations statistics

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant

Write at least 150 words

Trang 31

A.2 Synchronic graphs

If you have a look at the chart below, you do not find changes in the figures but you can the similarities and/or differences in numbers For example:

 The UK spent more on cars, cameras, and books than France

 The spending on computers and perfume was bigger in France than in the UK

 Cars got the biggest expenditure of all

 Both France and the UK spent the smallest amount of money on Perfume

PRACTICE: Stating major similarities and/or differences in the figures provided

B Identifying the key features

Key features can be the main trends (for diachronic graphs) or similarities and/or differences in numbers (for synchronic graphs)

Look at the bar chart below and circle the statements that you consider key features of the chart

6 Nova Scotia had the second biggest growth rate

7 The increasing rate in New Brunswick was 4%

No 2

1 The biggest number of UK students was in IT

2 UK students represented more or less the same figures in the surveyed courses

3 International students occupied the biggest number in the field of nursing

4 International students accounted for the smallest number in IT

5 UK students had a bigger presence in some disciplines while international students dominated others

6 There was a significant disparity in the number of international students across all these disciplines

7 The number of UK students and international students gaining second class degrees in nursing was similar

UK and international students gaining

second class degrees or better (2009)

C Preparing language in use

As for a diachronic bar chart, we use the same language to describe changes as in the line graph (refer

to section “language in use” in module 1) However, the synchronic bar chart requires comparison

structures which help to describe similarities and differences in numbers

Comparison Language

A) Introducing Differences

B) Comparative structures

C) Superlative Structures
