- The paternalistic relationship:
Professional has responsibility to analyse from the problem of client, to consider alternatives, and to decide upon one or more of the alternatives
Client – only in implementation, not consider alternatives, not be educated
Customers possesses a rather high level knowledge of the problem area in the first place
A contract – a legal entity, enforced by the power of legal system
Responsibility may evolve and change from time to time without any explicit contract Customer trusts the professional because of some connection, some confidence, independent of the customer-professional relationship
Professional: analyse the customer’s problem, lay out the available alternatives and advice about them, educate customers as necessary, implement some of all decisions Customer: Customer uses professional’s knowledge to understand his/her need - Customer uses professional’s superior expertise - Customer relies upon skills and resources professional has - Considerable degree of customer freedom
5 Some related theories of ethics.
a Deontological theories: The ethics of the act itself and its rational motivation
Deontological theory is the normative ethical theory that the morality of an action should be based on whether that action itself is right or wrong under a series of rules, rather than based on
4
Trang 9the consequences of the action It is sometimes described as duty obligation, - or rule-based ethics
• Focus on what human can be fully responsible for
• An ethical choice is expressed in universal terms
• Categorical imperative
• To be really effective it requires managers to have a keen sense of rightness and wrongness
b Consequentialist theories: Evaluating choices in terms of the outcomes they bring
about
Consequentialist theories: The ethics of an action is to be evaluated and judged in terms of the consequences it carries
• Stems from a natural instinct that humans have
• In direct contrast with deontology, where some acts are wrong no matter what the consequences
• Best known example of consequentialism is utilitarianism – the view that an action is right
if it promotes the greatest good for the greatest number of people
• Its greatest weakness is its failure to adequately explain what counts as the basic values against all action are to be evaluated
6 Stakeholder theory
interest in a particular organisation It is often meaningful to separate groups of stakeholders intro sub-categories with similar, but not identical, interests Individuals and groups may have multiple interests in an organisation and therefore belong to various stakeholder clusters
of actors accomplish multiple and sometimes conflicting purposes
Approach to strategic management: Stakeholder theory explicitly take into account the
strategic threats and opportunities that arise from the claims and expectations placed on the company by various social and political actors
Framework of corporate social responsibility: Stakeholder theory provides a way to
frame and assess society’s values and expectations of business Managers also seem to understand the concept of stakeholder management better than the concept of corporate social responsibility
