To find the drawback of self - help books - To analyze reasons for misunderstanding beliefs of self-help - To suggest the solutions of better “self - help reading” for NEU students Research questions The study is conducted to answer the following research questions: - What are the drawbacks that self-help books can bring to NEU students ? - What are the factors that lead to misunderstanding of self - help books of NEU students ? - What are the solutions for NEU students to read self - help books more effectively ? Scope Self-help industry is popular with people of all ages, from teenagers to the elderly However, this study only focuses on the side effects of self-help on NEU students, aging from 18 to 20 This research consists of the current situation and opinions of these students on self-help and some recommendations for them to utilize the benefit of self-help and avoid the side effects of it Research Methods This study will be conducted by both quantitative and qualitative methods Previously, we will use survey questionnaires for participants to obtain primary data (their opinions, time and money consumed for self-help publication) Besides, informal interviews with informants as well as their teachers and material-reading will also be done to acquire secondary data Structure The study consists of three parts: Introduction: presents rationale, objectives, scope, method, and design of the study Development: includes three chapters: Chapter 1: Literature Review – provide the basic theoretical background from literature on self-help such as the original, famous authors and “gurus”, and the main content of almost self-help publications Especially, the advantages and disadvantages of this industry, which are the main issues of this study, are discussed obviously in this chapter Chapter 2: Findings and Discussion – provide the statistics on NEU students ‘ self-help consumption, in order to discuss the typical reasons and “traps” that they usually get in when using self-help products Chapter 3: Recommendations – give the advice from professors and teachers, to help students cope with these “traps” and utilize the advantage of this industry Conclusion: presents the summary of the study, limitations and the suggestions for further study Document continues below Discover more from: mine mine 1.1 Definition of self-help books Thi viết 100% (3) The self-help book market today is approaching a total $1 billion and is luậnofAEP continually growing In fact, surveys have shown that one in five people has read a self-help book in the last year (Project Bold Life, 2022) It can be seen that self-help books have become so popular in today’s stressful world To have a better understanding of this research, it’s necessary to acknowledge the definition of self-help book According to IULIA-CRISTINA UTA, self-help is about consciously identifying and developing one or more facets of your life Merriam Webster states : “self-help is the action or process of bettering oneself or overcoming one's problems without the aid of others'' To be added, Adbergsma (2007) defined the self-help book as the guidance in print for every conceivable mental problem and for every life choice, from what Meyer (1980) has called the positive thinkers To conclude, the self-help book is the type of book that provides guidance and advice about mental and personal issues to help readers overcome their problems without professional aid 1.2 The role of self - help books Self-help books are not included on reading lists at any prestigious universities, they are not evaluated in scholarly publications, and it is unfathomable that one of their authors could ever win a major literary award This organized campaign of criticism directed at the self-help genre as a whole is a sign of Romantic prejudice towards the concept of emotional education It is considered beneath the dignity of any serious writer to provide explicit Emotional Education If we are even remotely intelligent, we ought to already be aware of how to live (The school of Life, 2018) It can be understood that people nowadays are encouraged to disregard the idea of self-help books This led to the degradation in the quality of self help books and the trend where people underestimate the core value that self-help books can bring Going back to the classical cultures of ancient Greece and Rome (Eudaimonia) - when self-help was at the pinnacle of literature, the utmost aspiration of any author was considered to be to provide the reader with an emotional education that may lead them to fulfillment Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, Seneca, Plutarch, and Marcus Aurelius, some of the most revered philosophers, all produced self-help books with the intention of teaching us how to live and die properly They also used all of their wit, intelligence, and writing skills when crafting their manuals to ensure that both the cerebral and emotional faculties would be delighted by their messages The best literary masterpieces, regardless of culture or time period, including Marcus Aurelius' Meditations and Seneca's On Anger which unquestionably are also self-help books Tolstoy's War and Peace clearly strives to teach compassion, serenity, and forgiveness It also provides advice on money, manners, relationships, and professional growth It also aims to demonstrate how to be a good friend and a better parent It's obvious that the book is a self-help manual; the current custodians of culture just choose not to call it one Similar to other self-help books, Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time shows us how to let go of our commitment to romantic love and social position in favor of a focus on art and thought To call such works self-help books is hardly a slight It helps us recognize their goals, which are to lead us away from foolishness and toward lifestyles that are more honest and authentic (The school of life, 2018) When considering aforementioned self-help masterpieces, it is obvious that quality self-help books actually provide beneficial value to the reader Selfhelp books’ aim is to lead people toward a more positive lifestyle as well as provide advice on many aspects of life The aspects of life that self-help books mainly benefit can be divided into aspects presented by themes of self-help books according to Ad Bergsma (2007) “Personal Growth” is the first theme when the readers can get advice about self-management, art of living, personal effectiveness, and methods for achieving goals This type of self-help book provides people with an orientation to develop and grow "Personal relations" makes up the second theme This area, which focuses on close connections, also touches on communication The first category (having satisfying relationships) is more goal-oriented, whereas the second aims to provide tools to understand and improve communication abilities Intimate relationships as well as other situations might benefit from these communication skills The third theme of the self-help book is ‘coping with stress’ These books provide practical ideas on how to find relaxation and rest, in particular in relation to working life Another theme in this category is to enhance resilience in difficult circumstances The authors offer interventions that have a cognitive behavioral signature They help readers to develop an outlook on the world that minimizes stress The final significant category is "Who Am I?" which gives people a sense of identity The majority of the discrepancy between the two raters was caused by this section's substantial overlap with the Personal growth category The first step toward improving oneself and making wise decisions in life can be thought of as knowing oneself The distinction is that the category Personal growth is more pragmatic while the category Who Am I? is more focused on offering insight (Ad Bergsma, 2007) 1.3 Noticeable side – effects of self – help books, which have influence on NEU students Firstly, self - help books can form perceptions of inferiority Self-help books are synonymous with helping readers think positively (Ad Bergsma, 2007) Journal of Happiness Studies states that reading this kind of book provides people with life satisfaction However, in his blog “5 Problems with the self-help industry”, Mark Manson claims that self-help brings pessimistic feelings to readers but not satisfied ones The main major content of most selfimprovement books is about successful people and the way they got victory achievements, which does not help the readers possess long-term motivation but the perceptions of being flawed When reading, people tend to have a great desire in looking for perfection or to follow the life plans of others (Alexandra Schwartz, 2018) Improving ourselves to death Reporting that this action is not only stressful but also deadly British journalist Will Storr, moreover, writes “People are suffering and dying under the torture of the fantasy self they are failing to become” in his book: “Selfie: How We Became So Self-Obsessed and What It's Doing to Us” (March 2018) Self-help books appear to become unmotivated advisors by giving readers a sense of being shameful when reading about others’ success Moreover, creating unrealistic expectations is a noticeable side - effect of self - help books A lot of cynicism has been raised about the effectiveness of self-help books Self-help books usually give an over-simplistic view of reality to their readers As the authors understand what the young readers desire, they create an ideal world where every effort with the right intentions and formula can achieve success (Styron W, 1990) Darkness visible “New York: Random House” calls self-help books fraudulent Csikszentmihalyi, M (1999) Flow: Psychologie van de optimale ervaring Amsterdam: Boom claims it is apparent self-help books will not help most readers to achieve what they desire; though it provides its readers with constant positive feelings, these feelings are only temporary, and even if they succeed the readers will still be as unhappy as before they read the book (Polivy J & Herman P 2002) If at first, you don’t succeed; false hopes of self-change American Psychologists, 57(9), 677–689 claim that 2.3 Personal opinion when reading self - help books 2.3.1 The opinions about the drawbacks of self-help books Figure 8: The opinions about the drawbacks of self-help books According to the four common drawbacks of reading self-help books, solving problems with a one-size-fits-all attitude takes the highest percentage at 62% It is figured out that not all advice from this kind of book is suitable for everyone The knowledge in one book cannot be applied widely in every situation People with different personalities and experiences would prefer different methods of coping with the same issue 36% of readers realize that self-help books provide impractical expectations Because the major content is about successful people, which can easily make readers believe that achieving wealth is so simple The last two negative effects taking the smallest percentages are forming perceptions of inferiority (16%) and becoming a part of the crowd effect (18%), respectively Many readers, especially the young, become FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) nowadays, they choose self-improvement books due to others’ recommendations or just their popularity, not based on their usefulness The sense of being flawed is a general feeling of readers after reading self-help books The success of authors or fictional characters creates discomfort among users, they might compare their life with those and suffer the stress of not being successful 2.3.2 The participants’ state of emotion after reading about successful people and self comparison Figure 9: The participants’ state of emotion after reading selfhelp book There are four main kinds of emotions that are evoked when reading self-help books: jealousy, disappointment, encouragement, and emotionlessness It is clear that the figure for positive feelings is much higher than the others Over half of the survey participants (54%) admitted that self-help provides a great incentive to improve themselves One-fifth of participants seem unemotional with the content written in books In the second place, 24% of survey takers felt envious of the outstanding achievements prescribed in the self-help books Understandably, readers might compare themselves to the success of others and then assume that their life is terrible Another negative emotion evoked when reading self-improvement books was the discouragement, which took 2% less as compared with the figure of emotionlessness In contrast to motivated people, participants of this group felt dissatisfied with themselves and might have a false belief that their life is filled with failure or everything they did was wrong 2.3.3 The duration of a "good feeling" following reading a self-help book Figure 10: The duration of a "good feeling" following reading a self-help book The Pie chart below illustrates NEU Students’ opinions about their duration of feeling positive after reading a self-help book in our survey It is evident that the largest proportion of participants experienced positive feelings a long time after reading a self-help book while students feeling optimistic right after reading accounted for the lowest proportion To be more specific, the percentage of students receiving long-term positivity from reading self-help books was highest at 34%, followed by students considering positive emotion in just a few days with 32% This figure for students finding optimism after going through difficult times was 18% which was only 2% higher than the minority of students getting positive immediately after reading self-help books Most of the readers lost their motivation easily, because they did not start to change themselves immediately Developing oneself is a long journey, and people need to make changes from little things such as their habits, their behaviors, their timetables However, they usually dream about bigger goals, which are difficult to achieve immediately After realizing that nothing has changed, they may lose their interest and come back to their current life, without any improvement They may continue buying self-help books, receiving encouragement and losing it again It repeats like a circle 2.3.4 Participants’ possible reactions when facing defective advice in self-help books Figure 11: Participants’ possible reactions when facing defective advice in self-help books The bar chart below depicts participants’ various responses to defective advice in self-help books At first glance at the chart, it is noticeable that individuals who chose to stop reading after receiving useless advice from self-help books made up the largest proportion of participants, whereas other participants' reactions varied little in terms of quantity The majority of participants with 16 participants decided to give up self-help books if they couldn’t seek suitable advice while in reverse only two participants chose not to care about the advice When other participant responses to inappropriate advice in self-help books were taken into account, 13 participants read and tried to follow the advice again, which was a few more than criticizing the author, placing blame on themselves, or purchasing and reading other books, which had 12 participants, 11 participants, and 10 participants, respectively 2.4 Opinion about the advantages of self-help books 2.4.1 Participants’ opinion about the benefits of self-help books Figure 12: The perspective of participants about the benefits of self-help books The bar chart shows the participants’ responses to the benefits of self-help books At first glance at the chart, it is noticeable that the participants mostly feel neutral to all of the suggested self - help books’ benefits Due to this result, the benefits of self - help books barely have any impact on the readers or at least what the reader feels after they finish reading one However, the participants agree that self-help books help them to develop soft - skill along with feeling satisfied and motivated Moreover, a small percentage of them strongly agree that self - help books have a positive influence on their lives On the other hand, a few of them assume that self - help books not bring about these benefits to them In conclusion, selecting "neutral" may indicate that readers believe self-help books have a certain influence on their growth, but that influence is not particularly significant Thus, it can be said that self-help books not necessarily aid in many people's personal growth in real life 2.5 Suggestions about methods of reading self-help books 2.5.1 Some possible solutions for a better “self-help reading” for NEU students Figure 13: Possible solutions for a better “self-help reading” for NEU students The chart illustrates NEU Students’ opinions about their solutions for a better way to improve reading a self-help book in our survey It is evident that the largest proportion of participants suggested reading more slowly and detailedly while students assumed that reading the most recommended books accounted for a lower proportion, only about a third of them To be more specific, half of the college students find that reading with a positive attitude is also a better way for “self - help reading” Moreover, only one participant suggested that when reading self - help books, the reader should read with purpose, selectively and apply knowledge in practice to improve their “self - help reading” CHAPTER 3: RECOMMENDATIONS 3.1 Keeping positive attitude while reading Students need to keep a positive attitude while reading this genre The bubble of self-help, which is surrounded by positive messages, usually makes people believe that quitting is wrong Therefore, when they lose interest or motivation, they can be disappointed in themselves, and feel like losers But remember that, it is okay to not be okay The negative feeling is always a part of success, because “the actual meaningful things are created through struggle” (Jani, 2020) Accepting issues helps to create positive thinking, which is essential for making an effort in the future Moreover, instead of focusing too much on big goals , people need to start changing themselves by changing their little habits or behaviors, because “small steps make big changes” A long-term journey is too overwhelming and has too many things to be done, while people prefer immediate results The only way to achieve something really big and ambitious is by taking small steps consistently It makes motivation exist longer and people feel less stressful for their future 3.2 Reading with wisdom It is suggested that the reader read this kind of book with wisdom Because all the advice from self-help books is not always right In particular, Steve Harvey, a famous comedian, claimed that: “Rich people not sleep hours per day That is a third of your life.” This belief makes people misunderstand that the more hard-working they are, the more successful they will be As a result, they work a lot until they are exhausted without achieving any goals They need to realize that hard work is not enough, there are other factors to make them successful Whenever readers see new advice, they need to consider if it is right or wrong instead of following it spontaneously Readers also need to find detailed information about the content of self-help books before buying them, in order to know how suitable the books are The popularity does not mean that the books are effective for everyone Reading wrongly may make people lose interest in reading books and get discouraged 3.3 Reading with slow speed Readers should read self-help more slowly Self-help books are non-fiction books It means that they can not read this genre as you read fiction books: absorbing them, reading continuously from start to end This way may create a lot of motivation, however, it is not enough to change their lives They should read a few pages, or a chapter, with carefulness, highlight, and take note of all the useful things Then they need to practice the advice Moreover, we suggest that they read one more time, because “reading the same paragraph several times brings new insights and understanding that you will not get by reading it once” (Sasson) CONCLUSION Summary of the study This study seeks to uncover the shortcomings of self-help books that may be overlooked and examine in depth the causes of misinterpretations of self-help book beliefs to provide solutions for NEU students to read self-help books properly Due to limited time, this study will just focus on the drawbacks of selfhelp books on NEU students In our study, we found that self-help books' main goals are to guide readers toward a happier way of life and to offer guidance on a variety of life issues Since this study's time and resources are restricted, it will concentrate on four areas where self-help books are most beneficial: personal development, interpersonal relationships, stress management, and sense of identity While there is no denying that self-help books have good intentions, their one-size-fitsall philosophy and too simplified vision of reality limit their ability to aid readers or even have unintended negative effects Of course, readers are also accountable for the negative impacts of self-help books when stressed-out students are particularly vulnerable to the over-simplistic view of self-help books due to their sensitivity and insecurity Additionally, when picking and reading self-help books, students may experience crowd effects Reading selfhelp books is harmful due to all of the aforementioned reasons As a result of our survey, it is clear that self-help book advice is not universally applicable and only seldom useful A majority of the students who took part in our poll lost their enthusiasm after a few days, despite the fact that more than half of them reported feeling better after reading self-help books This demonstrates that the counsel offered in self-help books actually works for some people in the short run In order to increase the effectiveness of self-help books, the thesis makes a number of recommendations, most of which are directed at the readers These include adopting a positive attitude when reading, carefully choosing self-help books, reading slowly, and paying close attention to the advice offered in the book All of the objectives stated at the outset of the study have been met, and it is hoped that this research will enable NEU students to more effectively utilize self-help literature by giving them the understanding they need Limitations of the study Most research projects will undoubtedly have limitations This thesis is not an exception due to the short term of the study and lack of prior experience First off, due to time constraints, the study is unable to address a factor that could have an impact on the results of our survey, namely the caliber of the selfhelp books that participants read Since self-help books come in a variety of quality levels, different pupils may react differently if they read better self-help books Second, the suggested remedy in this study was only put to the test among the authors It is unclear whether those suggestions will work for all self-help book readers as a result Last but not least, there were too many differences in the comprehension and reading abilities of the pupils who took the survey The ability to completely utilize the books may be lacking in students who hardly ever read them Therefore, a survey that concentrates on students who read books on a regular basis will yield more insightful results Suggestions for further study First, it is suggested that future research with a bigger participant pool will be conducted to address the shortcomings of this study In order to get a more accurate answer, participants in the questionnaire must all receive the identical books of a specified caliber Last but not least, participants should possess specific book expertise in order to ensure that the books’ message is fully received In conclusion, the researchers have been successful in providing answers to the issues posed in the outset, despite some inescapable limitations This study intends to give NEU students, in particular, helpful information on the downsides of self-help books to improve students' comprehension of this sort of book and help them make the most of it APPENDIX Questionnaires
