open ditches, pipe culvert, irrigation channel, and fittings and connection works of waterways Box Culvert for waterways is specified in Section 06950 Section 04100 shall include construction of open ditches of waterways This work shall be carried out in accordance with these Specifications and the specifications for other work items involved, all in conformity with the lines, grades and dimensions instructed by the Engineer Where requirements set out are not included in this specification, other related Vietnam standards shall be applied The Contractor shall construct roadside ditches using mortared stonework, reinforced concrete, or precast as shown in the Drawings, unless otherwise directed by the Engineer The applicable provisions of Clause 2.7 “Working and Dealing with Water Flow” in section 01050 shall be read into and become part of this Clause The cost of working in, or dealing with all ground water encountered in executing the work of this section will be deemed to be included in the unit price for the pay item being installed or constructed MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS 2.1 MATERIALS Within the period established in the General Specifications, the Contractor shall submit samples of materials he intends to use for waterway lining to obtain the Engineer’s approval (a) Fill shall conform to the requirements for material properties, placing, compacting and Quality assurance specified in Specification Section 03400 “Embankment Construction” Erosion resistant material shall be approved by the Engineer (b) Mortared stone lining shall conform to the requirements for material properties, placing, compacting and Quality assurance specified in Specification Section 04200 “Mortared Stone Work” GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS 04100 of 51 DIVISION – WATERWAY WORKS (c) Open Ditches -Section 04100 Reinforced concrete work shall conform to the requirements for material properties, placing, curing, and Quality assurance specified in Specification Section 06100 “Concrete and Concrete Structures” GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS 04100 of 51 DIVISION – WATERWAY WORKS Open Ditches -Section 04100 2.2 SUBMITTALS 2.2.1 SHOP AND WORKING DRAWINGS AND SCHEDULES (a) In accordance with the requirements stipulated in Specification Section 01150 “Contractor’s Submittals”, the Contractor shall submit complete sets of Drawings and Schedules for the ditches works, to the Engineer for review and approval (b) The Contractor shall obtain the Engineer’s approval to the submitted drawings and schedules at least 28days before commencement of the corresponding works 2.2.2 OTHER SUBMITTALS The Contractor shall submit samples of materials he intends to use for waterway lining to obtain the Engineer’s approval CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS 3.1 SETTING OUT DITCHES The Contractor shall set out the required locations, lengths, direction of fall, and grades of all ditches, whether lined or unlined Setting out shall include locating all associated catch pits and out falls 3.2 ROADSIDE DITCHES CONSTRUCTION The Contractor shall construct the stone lining for ditches as specified in this Specification Section after the Engineer approves the prepared roadside drain formations The Contractor shall excavate, fill, and shape the realigned or new ditches to the grades shown on the construction drawings and to the profiles shown on the typical drawings of ditches or as otherwise directed by the Engineer All work on ditches, inlets, pipe inlets/outlets and joint boxes shall be carefully set out and constructed with due recognition being taken of the fact that the upper surfaces must be incorporated exactly into curbs, footpaths, etc The Engineer may reject any item of work under this Clause when the upper surfaces not meet the tolerances for curb and footpath given elsewhere in these Specifications Unless otherwise specified, joints of precast blocks shall be carefully constructed using cement mortar of part cement and parts sand so as to prevent leakage Hook shaped ditches along steep slopes shall be constructed so as to effectively resist sliding, by excavating soil to the shape of the hook and placing the concrete without disturbing the surrounding soil For drainage ditches lined with mortared stonework, earthworks shall be completed and the foundation tamped prior to placing a blinding stone foundation at the invert of the ditch Stone shall be securely placed by GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS 04100 of 51 DIVISION – WATERWAY WORKS Open Ditches -Section 04100 hand, and voids shall be avoided The face surfaces of all stones shall form a smooth regular surface conforming to the shape of the ditch No stone surface shall extend more than one centimetre above or below the general level of the ditch These structures shall be located and constructed as shown on the Drawings for this work The works of Mortared Stonework, riprap etc shall be carried out in accordance with Section 04200 of these Specifications To ensure uniformity in the horizontal and vertical alignment of the curb, the Engineer may instruct that work on the upper sections of inlets, catch basins and ditches be deferred and carried out immediately before or during work on the adjacent curb Any additional expense incurred in complying with this instruction will be deemed to be already included in the unit price for this work The Contractor shall remove and dispose of all excavation material to at least 10 meters from the waterway area to prevent any surplus material from falling into the excavated waterway 3.3 TOLERANCES, RECTIFYING AND MAINTENANCE 3.3.1 DIMENSIONAL TOLERANCES (a) The final grade of roadside ditch shall not be lower or higher 1cm than the one specified in the Drawings at any location The finished surface shall be equally smooth to make sure smooth water flow and no obstruction throughout process of slow flowing (b) Difference between ditches alignments and the shape of cross sections to ±2 cm at any point specified in the Drawings is not allowed 3.3.2 RECTIFYING UNSATISFACTORY WORK (a) The Contractor shall rectify all waterway construction work that does not meet the above mentioned tolerance criteria or that the Engineer rejects as unacceptable The Contractor shall rectify unacceptable work as directed by the Engineer (b) The Contractor shall repeat survey work defining existing or constructed surface profiles as often as necessary to obtain an accurate record of the physical conditions (c) Rectification work may include: (d) additional excavation or fill, which could include backfilling new work and re-excavating it to the specified dimensions, lines, and grades, and repairing or replacing defective mortared stonework or reinforced concrete work No additional payment shall be made for the extra work or quantities used for the rectification GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS 04100 of 51 DIVISION – WATERWAY WORKS Open Ditches -Section 04100 3.3.3 MAINTENANCE OF ACCEPTED WORK Notwithstanding the Contractor’s obligation to rectify unsatisfactory or failed work, the Contractor shall also be responsible for routine maintenance of all completed and accepted waterways throughout the Contract Period No separate measurement or payment shall be made for such routine maintenance GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS 04100 of 51 DIVISION – WATERWAY WORKS Open Ditches -Section 04100 MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT 4.1 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT Ditches shall be measured in linear meter of completed ditch according to the shop drawings submitted by the Contractor The measurement for ditches will be independent of the depth and the unit price will be deemed to cover any depth within the range shown on the Drawings Where ditches are formed with vertical walls of different heights, the combined height of walls will be compared with the combined height of walls on standard ditches as shown on the Drawings, when determining the compliance with this method of measurement 4.2 BASIS OF PAYMENT (a) Payment shall be full compensation for the work prescribed in this Section including all preparatory works, supplying and transportation of materials, placing and compaction of filling material, and for furnishing all labour, materials, tests, tools, equipment and any incidentals to complete the work as shown on the Drawings and as required in accordance with these Specifications and/or as directed by the Engineer (b) No separate payment shall be made for excavation, backfill, bedding and lining for ditches or ditch relocation All these costs shall be deemed to be included in the main items contained in Specification Section Pay Item
