spreading its influence, there is a demand for improving the human resources’ foreign language level It plays an important role in education and training and the development of Vietnam In general, mastering a lingo is not only a necessary requirement for high-level employees to apply new technology processes but also a vital skill for modern Vietnamese International economic integration opens many opportunities for people mastering more than one language, especially English-the most popular language in the world nowadays This is the international language used in communication, business, global cooperation and activities Therefore English has recently become the first requirements for employer to recruit their employees In order to help students speak English fluently, a lot of English training centers have been established in Hanoi Every company has its different target customers and competitive advantages Langmaster is one of them This is the first center in Vietnam that has successfully applied Effortless English, an outstanding method helping millions people in the world to speak English fluently and naturally Being introduced by English Faculty of Vietnam Commercial University, I had an internship which lasted for weeks (from 5/1/2015 to 30/1/2015) at Langmaster International education investment and technology development Joint Stock Company to study its business activities as well as the teaching method of the center Thanks to this internship, I could apply what I have learnt into workplace, gain valuable experiences and necessary information to complete this report CHAPTER 1: AN OVERVIEW ABOUT THE COMPANY 1.1 Foundation and history 1.1.1 An overview about the company - Company name: Langmaster International education investment and info@langmaster.edu.vn - Website: www.langmaster.edu.vn 1.1.2 Foundation and history Langmaster is known as the first language center applying a brand new learning English method – Effortless English in Vietnam With an innovative class model and a professional working system, its image has been widening with a high speed since its foundation Starting its first step as an English club in 2010, Langmaster has been developed to an English training center and officially became a company since November 11th 2011 The CEO, Mr Nguyen Tien Dung, a young talented man, together with the valuable assistance from his two comrades, Mr Nguyen Duy Han and Mr Pham Le Duong, is the core factor for the big success of Langmaster nowadays With the slogan: “make the voice of Vietnam be widely heard throughout the word”, these three men decided to help an uncountable number of people with learning English for free in their English club Most of these people were students, who could not afford to pay for the course in a language center yet had a burning desire for learning English So Langmaster English club at that moment was a “life saver” to those people and all of they are now still grateful for this priceless help Like many other start-up business, Langmaster has experienced a number of difficulties as well as obstacles in order to get these achievements today As stated before, it was founded as an English club in 2010 An English club with no charge and enthusiastic instructors quickly got known widely among young people, especially college students The number of people coming to the club was so enormous that the three men made a big decision: promoting it to a English training center Therefore in November 11th 2011, Langmaster International Education Organization was officially established 1.2 Business field Langmaster International Education Organization is the first English center focusing on psychological factors in teaching English The company always tries their best to provide English training programs as well as modern thoughts and skills training programs to students and employees so that they can speak English easily, fluently and automatically from 3-6 months As an English center, Langmaster’s business field is teaching English to anyone in need of learning this language Realizing that a large number of Vietnamese people are learning English just in grammar, this company decided to focus on teaching pronunciation and communication, which most of the students seriously lack of Additionally, Langmaster supposes that its mission is not only teaching English to Vietnamese people, but also bringing them a community to speak English together That’s why Langmaster English Club, a “big class” beside the regular classes, has been established and working smoothly for nearly years There are also frequent outdoor meetings set up by teachers, so that the students can get a chance to practice what they gain in class Learners at Langmaster can join the club for free but those who are not studying at Langmaster have to pay a certain amount as a member fee By this way, Langmaster has been successful in helping numerous students improve their English speaking, simultaneously spreading its name in this the educational field Langmaster also cooperates with many professionals to organize seminars on training modern thoughts and necessary skills for learners PhD Phan Quoc Viet, the chairman of the board of Tam Viet group PhD Le Tham Duong, the dean of business administration faculty in Ho Chi Minh Banking University, PhD Vasanth Gopalan, the leading professionals in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) have helped many learners to improve their skills and be ready for the competitive job market Although this is not main business field of Langmaster, it also brings revenue for the company 1.3 Organizational structure 1.3.1 Diagram of organizational structure Board of directors General manager Deputy general manager is operated by the functional organization structure The company has many departments including finance-accounting department, sales department, training department, marketing department and so on Each department will have its own department head, and he will be responsible for the performance of his section In this structure people are grouped as per their area of specialization These people are supervised by a functional manager who has expertise in the same field, which helps him to effectively utilize the skills of employees, which ultimately helps him in achieving the organization’s business objectives The company has many departments including finance-accounting department, sales department, training department, marketing department and so on Each department will have its own department head, and he will be responsible for the performance of his section This helps the organization control the quality and uniformity of performance Here are functions of each unit in the organizational structure: Board of directors: Board of directors makes all decisions in the company The board has a strategic function in providing the vision, mission and goals of the organization It also has the responsibility of establishing future plans and strategies for the company as well as policies based governance system General manager: The general manager is responsible for and overseeing the dayto-day operation of the business Frequently, the General manager is responsible for effective planning, delegating, coordinating, staffing, organizing, and decision making to attain desirable profit making results for the organization Deputy general manager: Deputy general manager is also referred to as an assistant manager, works closely with the manager and helps him to execute strategies handed down from above, develop, coordinate and plan projects and programs Deputy general manager also steps in and assumes the general manager's responsibilities in his absence Training department: Training department has the responsibility of consulting the deputy general manager, organizing and implementing training programs including lesson plans, teaching processes, learning materials It is also in charge of teaching at classes and ensuring the class quality in accordance with training regulations issued by the company 10 2014) Branch and which is far from the city center with smaller scale and just have the business performance of one third of that in the rest branches 2.1.2 Main products in the company a) English courses Langmaster now has English courses including Effortless English Basic, Effortless English Advanced and Effortless English VIP Effortless English Basic focuses on standardizing learners’ pronunciation with IPA (International phonemic chart) and learning English through elementary English conversations which help to create basic language area in learners’ brain By learning this way, learners can practice thinking in English so that they can speak English fluently without translation in their brains In addition, the course also gives students opportunities to learn presentation skills and how to watch movies without subtitles Effortless English Advanced applies rules for speaking English fluently in Effortless English System to create right habits in learning English The principle “learners’ psychology accounts for 80% of success, method is only 20%” inspires and motivates learners in every lesson The course concentrates on enhancing reaction speed in communication by telling Mini Story, answering WH- Questions, Yes/No questions about the story Effortless English VIP is the course that integrates Effortless English Basic and Effortless English Advanced b) Modern thoughts and necessary skills courses Langmaster cooperates with PhD Vasanth Gopalan, the leading professionals in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) to held short-term NLP courses as well as 8-day courses NLP is a science studying about human beings to help people to become outstanding or at least their best in the shortest time by simulating successful people In comparison with other soft skills that students have learnt such as sale, negotiation, 15 presentation, communication skills NLP gains an insight into human beings and be at a higher level Besides, Langmaster also organizes many seminars with different topics trained by many local and foreign professionals such as PhD Vas, PhD AJ Hoge, PhD Biwaroops, PhD Shlomo Shoham, Professor Hung MA, PhD Le Thsm Duong and so on Seminars like “Find Your Voice” “Outstanding leadership with NLP” “Emotional state of a leader” “Manage your life” and so on created good reputation for Langmaster 2.2 Business performance of the company Table 2.2a: Capital structure of the increased Specifically, the total value of assets in 2014 grew up by 1.5 billion VND The company specializing providing educational products so its current assets accounted for a very large proportion (68% over total assets) In terms of capital, the company had large loans, namely, in 2014 the liabilities accounted for 74% of total capital As a start-up company, it is necessary for Langmaster to get a loan to expand the business so we can infer that the distribution of the company’s capital structure was reasonable with the characteristics of a commercial firm Table 2.2b: Business result of in years Total revenue increased significantly by 34% This revenue was mostly from selling English courses and modern thoughts and skills courses However, there was all so a rise in 17 turnover from financial operations The large revenue from selling and providing services gave the company a chance to expand their business capital and invest in financial activities Regarding to operation expense, we can see that the total expense in 2014 was higher than 2013 by 35% For 2014, Langmaster enhanced marketing strategies to spread the image of the company in universities and increase sales for English courses That was the reason why the selling expense in 2014 is much higher than that of 2013 and the total expense in this year therefore increased to 12,188,820 VND Although competition in the sector is more and more fierce, English courses at Langmaster have still attracted a large number of students thanks to the monopoly in applying Effortless English into teaching Therefore the Earing after tax of the company in 2014 reached 833,988,000 VND, up by 32% 2.3 Strengths and weakness of the English teaching method at Langmaster Langmaster is proud to be the first one bringing Effortless English to Vietnam Effortless English is an English course prepared by A.J Hoge, American from San Francisco, who teaches English to foreigners Every lesson set of Efforless English consists of few parts: there`s a Text Article telling learners a story There is also an audio version of this text learners should listen to Then, there`s audio Vocabulary Lesson in which the teacher explains words used in the story The most important part is the MiniStory This is the key to overcome the fear of speaking English by answering questions about the story There are also Action Vocab videos during which learners will learn new words by repeating them and showing them with your whole body AJ Hoge has created one of the most recent and effective methods to learn English Widely known and applied over the world, Effortless English must have numerous advantages that not exist in other methods However, since nothing is perfect, it certainly contains some disadvantages that need to be improved soon 18 2.3.1 Strengths Effortless English is the first method ever in history involving both mind and body in learning English This is the reason why students can “absorb” and “digest” English in a surprisingly short time (about to months) and of course, effectively Usually, English learners only learn English using their mind They listen to the teachers; take notes then try to memorize everything This process often takes a fairly long time because our brains acquire a huge amount of information per day and it is easy to get distracted from trying to memorizing lessons in class Moreover, in most cases, students would probably forget about a half of the knowledge they are taught after a period not practicing or using it But with Effortless English, students are required to use their whole bodies to learn For example, on learning the word “cat”, students would not write down: “cat” and its Vietnamese meaning next to the word to remember it, but repeat many times the word with their hands on the heads (doing a cat) along with visualizing a cat in their mind By that way, every time they see the word, their brains will automatically connect to the action and the image they did before and give the information about the word “cat” This way of learning a foreign language not only helps students acquire English faster but also gives them joy and fun during the study Furthermore, since Effortless English focuses mainly on pronunciation and speaking, learners will not have to worry about being given boring grammar lessons like they had all the time at school AJ Hoge has brought communication English to learners through the passages or mini stories he composed himself All the passages such as “How to speak perfect English”, “Learning English is a piece of cake”, “An evil English teacher” not only give students some ideas about learning English effectively, but also help them master their pronunciation, give them plenty new words and structures that are frequently used in daily spoken English Most of the students, especially in Vietnam, where English is mainly taught in grammar and structures, agree that they not feel bored when learning English anymore Instead English now becomes interesting and attractive to them 19 2.3.2 Weaknesses As stated above, having disadvantages is inevitable to anything including Effortless English Although there is a big number of topics, all of which are updated and useful, learners just learn some of them Because the learning process of this method is repeated in each lesson with steps: listen to a story, use the whole body to learn new words, retell the story and then answer questions Students need a good motivation and self-discipline to overcome their laziness and study at home on their own Therefore, after finishing the course with teacher just few of them are determined and patient enough to continue learing the rest topics by themselves Sometimes, they find those topics not really relevant to their life, meaning there is not much for them to apply into reality Another drawback of this method is that it does not suit English beginners very well The passages and mini stories require students a basic knowledge of English, especially in grammar and pronunciation, before acquiring them It is hardly possible for starters to fully understand and put up with those passages In fact, people with English as a zero are the ones who want to pick up this language most And the truth is that there are a number of people quitting this method due to this shortcoming 20 CHAPTER 3: THE APPLICATION OF EFFORTLESS ENGLISH IN TEACHING ENGLISH AT LANGMASTER 3.1 How Langmaster applies Effortless English into teaching After a long time doing research thoroughly about this method, Nguyen Tien Dung, together with his cooperators, Nguyen Duy Han and Pham Le Duong, found a way to make the best use of Effortless English in Vietnam This system, as already mentioned, has some drawbacks that need to be improved in order to suit the beginners Therefore, these men came up with a course called Effortless English Basic, whose function is to help learners gain some basic knowledge about English, especially in grammar and pronunciation before taking the advanced course Effortless English Basic includes 25 lessons in total, each of which lasts about 1,5 hours In this course, students are given the right way of how to pronounce a word instead of saying it in “Vietnamese way” or their own way This course focuses mainly on teaching learners the symbols of each sounds and how to make it correctly With detailed instruction about each sound in English phonemic chart, Langmaster has helped its students pronounce single words and simple sentence properly Additionally, Langmaster includes advanced pronunciation to the course (ending sounds, linking sounds, reduced sounds, silent sounds, intonation and so on) in this course After finishing the basic course The course that helps students develop their English speaking is Effortless English Advanced, which lasts for 20 lessons, with 1,5 hours each This course is basically similar to what AJ Hoge teaches English with Effortless English in his country Also in this course, students can be provided presentation skill, which highly related to speaking, in order to help them speak and express their ideas in both English and Vietnamese most effectively Although Effortless English can be a wonderful way of learning and teaching English, the founders of Langmaster were creative enough to customize this method so that it could fit Vietnamese people most especially Vietnamese beginers And thanks to these changes, students at Langmaster are able to acquire this language at their best 21 3.2 The effectiveness of Langmaster’s application of Effortless English in teaching Under the instruction of AJ Hoge plus some brilliant changes listed above, Langmaster has successfully applied Effortless English into their teaching So it has gained a lot of outstanding achievements yet suffered from many difficulties 3.2.1 Achievements in teaching English at Langmaster It is easy to see that thanks to the new method named Effortless English, Langmaster has been spreading its name over a wide area in a short time (nearly years) At the moment, hardly any students in Cau Giay, Tu Liem, Dong Da and Hai Ba Trung area students registering for English courses from November 2011 to December 2014 As it can be seen, Langmaster started its business with only 156 22 students, and by the end of the first year, it had attracted more than 200 students However, this slight increase was improved in 2012, after Langmaster had been known more widely because Effortless English has been applied more effectively The year 2013 saw the breakthrough in Langmaster history when the graph reached its peak at 890 students in July 2013 Cotinuing this trend, in 2014 the number of students registering at Langmaster increases considerably especially in October with 1260 new learners Attracting from 156 to 1260 students in less than years can be considered as a big achievement to such a small start-up like Langmaster There are several factors leading to it, including the increase in the need of studying English in the area, the efficiency of the marketing strategies, the improved quality of the student services and of course and so on However, the most important factor that builds up Langmaster’s image is the effectiveness of Effortless English This is the key factor to attract students as well as makes Langmaster different from other language schools According to the results of the monthly survey conducted to get feedbacks from students about this method, the percentage of students who are satisfied is relatively positive to Langmaster The graph below illustrates a fairly high proportion of students who think Effortless English is useful for them It could be told from the diagram that in general, the students’ responses to this new method are quite optimistic At the beginning, there were only 47% of the students believing that Effortless English is efficient But this amount rapidly increased in the next months and reached the peak of 100% in May both 2012 and 2013 The dramatic decrease in the satisfaction of learners in October 2014 was due to the poor quality of classrooms and other teaching facilities when all branches of Langmaster were full of students and the company had to rent some temporary classrooms at some universities to meet the increase demand This badly affacted the teaching qualification and the students’ psychology However in overall, 2014 was the year that Langmaster got a lot of good feedbacks from learners especially in March, April, November and December English at Langmaster Effortless English is a new method in Vietnam so Langmaster cannot advoid obstacles during the time applying it in teaching First, Langmaster applied Effortless English into teaching and learning Englishin coureses; however, in fact, the course that attracts students most is the Effortless English Basic Effortless English, with numerous videos and an enormous source of materials prepared by AJ Hoge, can be easily found on the Internet Therefore, students after being instructed about how to pronounce single sounds in English and a bit about English in communication (included in this course) will try self-studying at home instead of registering for an Effortless English Advanced Furthermore, the system of around 40 students is not suitable for a pronunciation class Studying Phonetics, it is required that students are taken care of cautiously since any single sound pronounced wrongly needs to be noticed and corrected at once 24 Although there is a coach for each group of about 11-13 people, the one whose responsibility is to make sure every member of his group is fully aware of everything instructed in class, the English level of the coaches is, in fact, limited They themselves cannot even ensure if they are speaking the right words, so it would be a loss to students not having many chances of being directly instructed by the teacher Supposed that all the trainers and coaches are totally qualified in English pronunciation, within this kind of class model, it is extremely hard for them to make sure every member of the class is fully aware of the way sounds are able to pronounce the sounds given properly Additionally, as mentioned before, there is a course named Effortless English Basic to help students improve their pronunciation before they can upgrade their level to the other course: Effortless English Advanced Basically, students in this course are only taught about phonemics and the way each sound is pronounced properly However not all of the English sounds are familiar to Vietnamese people, thus the number of people incapable of pronouncing such sounds is fairly large Even if they are completely able to speak any sound or any single word correctly after the course, learners still can hardly improve their English speaking, specifically cannot speak English more easily and naturally than before, not mention their vocabulary still remains the same Due to all the shortcomings caused by the difficulties listed above, it is necessary that Langmaster should come up with appropriate solutions as soon as possible to satisfy customers better In the next chapter, I will give some suggestions for this company based on my personal point of view 3.3 Some recommendations to improve qualification of teaching Effortless English at Langmaster 3.3.1 Recommendations for Effortless English Effortless English is known as a breakthrough in teaching and learning English field Having been acknowledged by a large number of people, it deserves to be one of the most wonderful methods for people to learn English However, there are still several minor drawbacks that AJ Hoge might want to consider to improve his system listed in the previous chapter In my opinion, in order to make it more widespread to Vietnamese 25 people, there should be more topics related to Vietnamese or Asian culture, which may inspire local people and give them more motivation to study Furthermore, it is recommended that AJ Hoge compose more passages and mini stories for beginners, which means the vocabulary and structure should be simpler, the length should be cut off a bit and the main content should be easy to catch up By that way, I believe that Effortless English will definitely become more popular in this country 3.3.2 Recommendations for Langmaster to improve the qualification of teaching Effortless English Langmaster just started its business years ago and in spite of the achievements it has gained recently, there are still numerous obstacles this company has to face up with Having been observing, working and doing researches about Langmaster, in this report, I will offer some suggestions to develop the current situation of this company a) Recommendations for applying Effortless English in teaching activities Langmaster is well-known for applying Effortless English in teaching but when students taking the Effortless English Basic course, they realize that there is hardly anything of this method provided Although this course focuses mainly on pronunciation, there should be more passages or mini stories of Effortless English presented in the course This would be a chance for students to practice the sounds they are taught before by reading the whole passage or story instead of single words or sentences Also, stories with funny topics will attract students better and give them more inspiration to study In addition, by this way, Langmaster can help students have some ideas about the famous Effortless English thus increase the number of students registering for the next course This can be considered as a marketing strategy, which, in my opinion, does not require too much attempt but will definitely take effort b) Recommendations for the class model at Langmaster As mentioned above, studying pronunciation required thorough care from the instructors, so that the learners can acquire the knowledge I would like to suggest that Langmaster should change this class model, reducing the number of each class down to 15 or 20 students There should still be trainer and or assistants per class as before By this way, the classroom will not be overloaded, and so is the task of the trainer and assistants, each student will be kept an eye on more carefully, thus the qualification of the course will be much more improved 27 CONCLUSION In conclusion, like other English centers, Langmaster’s mission is to help its students, or if possible, millions of Vietnamese people speak English fast and easily Within the valuable help of AJ Hoge and Effortless English, this company has gained various achievements and widening its image over Hanoi However, as a young business, it is unavoidable that Langmaster has still been suffering from many difficulties, which are the main reasons for the shortcomings of the teaching qualification at this company In addition to giving an overview about Langmaster International., JSC, this report has also analyzed the effectiveness of applying Effortless English in teaching English at the center Based on that analysis, some suggestions to develop the
