WEEK: PERIOD : UNIT 6: OUR TET HOLIDAY LESSON 2: A CLOSER LOOK (P 60) D O P: D O T: I OBJECTIVES: Knowledge: Aims: To help Ss use the lexical items related to the topic “Our Tet holiday” and pronounce correctly the sounds /∫/ and /s/ in isolation and in context Competence: By the end of the lesson, Students will be able to: - Practice using new words/ phrases about Tet holiday - Pronounce the sounds /s /and /ʃ/ in isolation and in context Character qualities: Ss are aware of what should be done at Tet II TEACHING AIDS: Textbook, sub –board, pictures, cassette III PROCEDURE: Warm up: Game - Name the pictures: Aim: To activate students’ prior knowledge and vocabulary related to the topic, the targeted vocabularies and its pronunciation - Teacher divides students into groups - Teacher gives words/ phrases in random order on the board: furniture - fireworks - fun - special food - wish - Then teacher shows pictures one by one and asks students to raise hands to give the correct words and their spelling - The group raising their hands the fastest will get the chance to answer first - Teacher gives 10 points for the group that gives the correct answers - The group getting the highest points will be the winner fireworks special food fun wish furniture - Teacher leads in the new lesson about vocabulary and pronunciation Pre-stage: Aim: To teach students how to combine a verb with a noun to talk about Tet activities * Vocabulary : - visit relatives = come to the place where the family members live: thăm họ hàng, bà (explanation) - make a wish = to wish/ ask for something you really want: thực điều ước (explanation) - clean the furniture = make the things in our house free from dirt: lau chùi đồ đạc nhà (explanation) - firework (n): pháo hoa (picture) * Checking vocab: What & Where During-stage: Aim: To help students revise the words learnt in context and identify how to pronounce the sounds /s/ and /∫/ and practice pronouncing these sounds correctly in words and in context a) Matching (group work) (task 2) - T divides class into groups, gives students in groups a number - T calls numbers - Ss in each group run to the board and match the verbs with the nouns - The group which is faster and has more correct answers is the winner (Good students make sentences with the phrases they’ve matched) VERBS NOUNS KEYS have a a wish 1- f visit b fireworks 2- e give c the furniture 3- d make d lucky money 4- a clean e relatives 5- c watch f fun 6- b b) Gap-fill: (pair work) - T asks ss to fill in the gaps with the words given in the box In Viet Nam, we celebrate Tet in January or February At Tet, we decorate our houses with peach flowers Children should help their parents to clean their houses People a lot of shopping before Tet My mother usually cooks special food during Tet c) Pronunciation: * Listen and repeat the sounds /ʃ/ and /s/ - Teacher may write two Vietnamese words on the board first, e.g xách and sách and asks students to say the words aloud and draw their attention to the difference in the pronunciation of x and s - Teacher writes the words see and she under the words xách and sách and read aloud the four words - Teacher lets students elicit the difference in the two sounds /s/ and /∫/ in English - Teacher has some students read out the words first Then play the recording and ask students to listen and repeat Teacher plays the recording as many times as necessary - Teacher calls on some students to check - T explains the differences in the pronunciation of the sounds /s/: rice spring celebrate /ʃ /: shopping special wish * Listen and play: game: Who is the best and the most expressive? - Teacher plays the recording for students to listen and repeat to the poem, ask them to pay attention to the underlined words with the /s/ and /∫/ sounds - Teacher divides students into groups, take turn to stand up and read the poem aloud The group which can read the poem best and with the most expression is the winner /s/: spring, sells, smile /ʃ /: she, shine, shy Production: Aim: To help students use fluently words/phrases they’ve learnt in communication *Speaking: (Pair work) What you to prepare for Tet? - clean / decorate the house - shopping - cook special food - make Chung cake What you at Tet? - have a wish - visit relatives - watch fireworks - give lucky money Homework: - Learn by heart vocabulary - Practice vocabulary and pronunciation /s /and /ʃ / sounds - Write sentences to tell about the most useful things on Tet holiday - Prepare A CLOSER LOOK * Feedback: ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
